This is my first video on KZbin. The goal of this series is to help the beginning tier learn about the various fly tying tools and their uses. I hope you enjoy them and look for other videos from me in the future.
Thanks,
Andy

That cheap vise is actually pretty good if you disassemble ,clean, lube with thick grease, and adjust the set screw underneath. It is fully adjustable, rotates nicely, although not a true concentric rotary vise, and holds hooks very securely...I have one and I'd be hard pressed to replace it with a $100 plus rotary vise, maybe someday but my modified (lubed and adjusted) cheap vise is quite satisfactory. UPDATE: Use high viscosity grease like the stuff they use in a camera lens. I bought a small tub of it on ebay for $5 enough for at least 100 vises...makes the vise turn goopy smooth like the focus ring on a good camera lens. Also added a DIY material clip made from the stress relief spring from a 1/4 inch audio plug and ordered a $20(CAD) bobbin rest. You can get perfect rotation of the hook depending on how you mount it in the vise as the standard vise jaws are offset from center. The other 2 available jaw styles are not offset as some of these vises come with 3 jaws.

Hi Lon, The "spring" is to keep long feathers, fibers, wraps, etc. tucked out of the way until you need them. Simply "tuck" them into the spring and bingo, they stay put (at least in a perfect world). If not, then you can go to the drug store and purchase a small hair clip which will do about the same thing.

Just wanted to say thanks for making this video series. Wanted to learn to tie flies but didn't know where to start. Found a good youtube video on how to make a simple sunray shadow so going to use that video together with your series. Just need to order all the tools and materials but hopefully I will have some nice performing flies in a not to distant future. :) Thanks again for taking the time to do this series.

Thanks, I wish I had seen this before I bought my first vise which was fairly expensive for what I got, then I went to the Norvise, which I really love and it does many things no other vise does. I really like Marc Petitjean's master vise, but it is too expensive for me right now, and of course I want the best. There are lower cost Petitjean vises but if I am jumping, I like the best. Character flaw of mine, but I love tools of all kinds and never seem to get rid of any of them. All the best, Sean ( I bought one of those beginner vises that you just showed for travel) It is good enough for the car and not a big loss if it gets stolen) I paid 15.00 for it from a friend. I really like it's portability. I would not travel with my norvise I have most of the attachments and it was an investment. I am very happy with it. All the best, Sean

Nice video! Thank you for sharing! I recently bought a starter kit for tying fly's and notice an item on the vise that I cannot seem to find any information about. I also saw this item on your last vice you displayed. It is the spring wrapped around the arm of your vice!? What is this used for? Thank you!

Good video. However it would be helpful if you actually said the name of the company you purchased the stuff from instead of always saying “from a large local merchant”.
