Heh, “West Branch.” I have a camp about 25 miles south of the best fishing on the West Branch of the Penobscot, & when I started fly fishing & the later started tying, I naively thought any reference to “West Branch” obviously meant the Penobscot. Before learning to tie, I used to stop at Eddie Reif’s shop for this & other flies tied for the Penobscot. Eddie guided on the river for 3 decades, so he really knew the flies to use. If you leave off the collar, it also makes a fine emerger. Caddis colors there tend to be lighter in the spring - green or orange, the gradually get darker from August through the fall tending to brown & black.

In a larger size to match the hatch, I would make it on #12 or #14 2xl with a light color wing like grizzly hen.

Hey Jim quick question. I just heard about this pattern so I googled it to learn more. However I'm seeing two pretty distinct patterns both saying they're west branch(of the penobscot) caddis. Some of them are this style and the others look more like a hornberg. Both say they're originally tied by Eddie. Any thoughts?

You did the research, so you'll know better than I. I like this pattern as it rides low in the water like the natural.

What time of the year would this fly be used? I am new to fly fishing.
@TheFlymanJim3 жыл бұрын
Well almost anytime you see caddis, which can be almost anytime. Their are 2500 different kinds of caddis flies. So they are wide spread and abundant.

They would still probably work on the Delaware

Great video...I think this would be deadly with darker brown as an October Caddis and also a Grammon caddis
