I have to agree with any fly in Art Flick’s manual(?)/book. My copy is buried in storage somewhere, so I’m glad you chose this one. In a pinch the amber dubbing allows you to also use this as a stonefly, not just as a mayfly nymph.

Good thinking. And after tying this one, I looked at a few examples, and I found a couple in the FF Museum that he tied-- and his bodies were a bit skinnier than the one I tied (and the one in Klausmeyer's book). Keeping it fat like this could indeed make a passable stonefly.

Nice fly. I’m glad to see I’m not the only one that breaks my thread. Great job. I think I like the D-rib better too.

Ahhh... thanks Chad. At least this thread broke during an easy part of the fly. When you break it in the middle of your third clump of spun deer hair, it's a much bigger pain. :-)

Good morning Matt. Nicely tied fly. I like the translucency of the D rib verses the floss. I will try it both ways on the vise. Might thin down a single strand of floss two or three fibers for a finer rib.
@SavageFlies3 жыл бұрын
Yes Steve, that would probably work best! When I saw embroidery thread in the recipe, I just grabbed a pack of it from my wife's stash. And what I picked up was not at all splittable. It was actually a kind of woven rope. Maybe there are different kinds of embroidery thread that I'm not aware of...
@peterrebhahn11133 жыл бұрын
Broken thread ...Matt keeping it real, one of the good things about this channel. Broken thread is an occupational hazard -- a happenstance no one needs to feel bad about. Now, accidentally cutting your thread because you weren't accurate with your blade or scissors -- that's when you feel stupid. Don't ask me how I know this.
@SavageFlies3 жыл бұрын
Oh Peter, that's the worst! Accidentally cutting your thread... especially when you're only about half way through the fly. Hackle and dubbing unwrapping all over the place! Yep, I've done that a time or two myself. :-)
@johnnylightning14913 жыл бұрын
Ya know Kelly Galloup would be proud of you, he kind of has the attitude that recipes are only a guide from which to start and then you should let Matt be Matt. Nice fly. Keep the good stuff coming.
@SavageFlies3 жыл бұрын
Ha! I like that. Recipes are just guides. I might have to mention that in the next tie where I have to deviate from a standard. :-)

That's a sweet pattern. I def like the d-rib better than the braid. 😊. Also been meaning to mention that I love the background music with the violins/ fiddle. It is very relaxing. It complements your fly tying videos well. Tight lines, my friend.

I came across your video today after getting an email about this same classic pattern by Art Flick. You nailed the thread color change! I went with Coats & Clark thread in brown for the rib which I think is a bit closer to Mr. Flick’s intent - give it a try next time. Also, might I suggest allowing for a tad more room for the thorax?! Tight lines! 🎣

Good morning Matt. Sitting here having ☕️ enjoying the video. I liked the d rib as well but I’ve often wondered if the original tier chose materials in addition to color for their ability to absorb or repel water to help keep the fly at the depth they wanted. It would be interesting to see if the original version ran at a different depth than the one with the d rib. Take care Matt.
@SavageFlies3 жыл бұрын
That's a great question John. I'd be curious too. I know I pay attention to what dubbing I choose based on absorbency. Particularly for wets and nymphs. I'd say Art Flick definitely chose his materials with a specific idea in mind.
@thomaswalls1233 жыл бұрын
I like the fly, but have you tried melting the tip and stretching it out thin, then tying it in? Just watch you are going to take those to the river and the orange hot spot will kill it.... Lol. Love your videos👍
@SavageFlies3 жыл бұрын
Ha! You might be right Thomas, you never know what kind of hot spot will be a trigger. Regarding melting the tips of vinyl rib, I've done that a few times after learning it from Mak (I think), but if I can get away with not doing that, I generally take the lazy route. :-)
@tonygarrett6013 жыл бұрын
Good looking fly the D rib looks good I wonder if it will fish differently. The floss will absorb water and sink faster but the D rib might be a little more buoyant and might look more like it is alive. Especially if you were fishing it behind a weighted nymph.
@SavageFlies3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tony; I think it will definitely fish a little differently, but I have no idea how much of a difference it will really make. I would say the biggest difference would be in what the fish sees more than its weight or buoyancy. I guess the only way to really tell would be trial and error, or actual observation. Could be an interesting experiment though. :-)

I like it- I think personsally the thorax looks too small. These thorax on these nymphs extends almost as long as the abdomen. I would have started it just in front of the 3rd wrap of d rib (from tail). Otherwise- great tie and I really dig the channel
