Hey Jon, listened to the wade Out There podcast and had to look up this fly. Been on a tying kick and this fits right in with everything else I have been tying this winter and spring. Sort of starting over. What color of bead do you like on the gray and I am assuming purple bead on the purple version. Thanks Jon. Will see you in the shop.

Nice fly - thanks for sharing! If you don't have the Ostrich on hand, any suggested substitutes?
@AnglersCovey11 ай бұрын
Ostrich is certainly the preferred material but Jon says you can try using a cdc feather.

@@AnglersCovey Great - thank you. Thought I might try to tie before I could get some ostrich.

I think it would be hard NOT to catch fish on this pattern. Definitely going to tie up a few variations. Question : do you move to a glass bead or a thread head as you get smaller? I tend to drop the weight for anything smaller than an standard #18 gap.
@AnglersCovey11 ай бұрын
Yes! Jon usually eliminates the bead all together and just employs a thread head on smaller than 20. However you can use a glass bead instead of tungsten, in fact, the original was designed with a glass bead for all sizes…

Can you provide the recipe for the gray and purple versions? Thanks.
@AnglersCovey11 ай бұрын
Absolutely! Same materials just change colors to: Gray: gray thread, black wire, natural ostrich. Purple: purple thread, black wire, natural ostrich

Does this pattern work in Stillwater?
@AnglersCovey11 ай бұрын
It absolutely does! Tie it in bigger sizes to match your local Chironomids!
