Got a couple of old shoe laces just like you picked apart. Your use of improvised materials reminds me of how I used to try and tie bream flies when I was growing up.

Everything in fly tying is a by-product of some other industry, mostly carpet fiber, I suspect. But to think all this synthetic material is made just for us is kind of crazy, just my opinion.

That's what it's all about. But be careful they will package and sell it as the next best thing if your not careful. LOL

Excellent video, Jim. I love tying flies from old recycled stuff. In the UK the supermarkets sell oranges in bags made from plastic netting. If you pick this apart you are left with flat plastic string that is good for nymph bodies. Regards from England.

Good stuff! That clear thread would make a nice body for some of the tiny midges or midge larva. The wool dubbing looks like a real find too.

I never thought about using the clear thread for pupa. I'm going to have to give that some thought. Tight Lines! Jim

Thanks Jim, I've got my wire from toasters and old TV's too. The spools they come on are a bear to open up so cards are good to put on and you can make your own to specific lengths so you have a workable length for a particular fly. I found the stretch cord at hobby lobby after reading about the tabou emerger and as a bonus I found that beadalon 49 strand wire on sale. It's the same stuff shops were selling for hook attachment on intruders at a fraction of the price. Parachute cord is a good source for the z-lon fibers, the military spec ones have synthetic shiny core fibers as a lot of hollow braid cords do. The outter piece can be used like mylar tubing or those worm flies salt water tiers make(forgot the name- blood worm?) Any way thanks, a lot of that stuff I have but you showed me some new ones and methods. We have to go shopping together some time, but we'll probably have to put an addition on our homes! 😉 You're the best Jim 👍

thanks for the tips I use empty spools to put my wire on and I use my cordless screw gun to wind it that cuts a lot of the time out of wrapping by hand I also get my peacock hurl from the craft store you have to pick through the bads ones but its a big money saver.

Thanks Jim, I really appreciate you taking the time to save us all some money. I know I am on a fixed income and it is very helpful for me. I wanted to know who the maker of the olive marker is. I have been looking for an olive for a long time and usually put a light green over some yellow, but it is not consistent. All the best and thanks again. Do you sell those little cards? I have great difficulty getting out and have to buy online as much as possible. All the best to you, and God Bless you, Sean

We are both night owls. I watch your patterns and if I think it is a challenge or there is a fly to match here I go and tie them. I have to stay up to help the wife in the night. Tying passes the time and keeps me sane. All the best to you. Sean

Hey Jim, great video as always! Do you know the maker of that stretch cord, and/or where you bought it? I tried my local hobby lobby which usually has everything and no luck. Thanks Jim

Seth, I didn't find very much at hobby lobby either. I usually shop at Micheal's or Jo-Ann Frabrics both have a large selection. The stretch cord is in the jewelry makeing section. The wool roving is near the yarn.

What kind of motors did you get the wire from?
@TheFlymanJim
@TheFlymanJim 10 жыл бұрын
This wire comes from a variety of sources. They come from battery operated clocks old toasters, old doorbells, etc. You can find them in any sort of battery operated instruments. You have to be always on the lookout at yard sales or flea markets. Home remolding often produces some. Good luck with your journey!

Jim I'm new to tying. what is CDC ? Dave
@TheFlymanJim
@TheFlymanJim 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, CDC (Cul De Conard) Are the feathers from around the Prenning gland of waterfowl. The prenning gland is what makes the oil the bird uses to make their feathers waterproof. They are very water resistant thus very good for dry flies. Great question. Jim

Jim- One thing I've told you before but it bears saying again: you are the most unpretentious person on God's Earth! I wouldn't have thought of these things in a million years. You don't have to patronize the tying stores all the time, right?! Cheers! Lassez le bon temps roullez! Cork
@TheFlymanJim
@TheFlymanJim 4 жыл бұрын
No you don't have to patronize the fly shop all the time. Personslly I look at the tying materials in the shop and figure out where they came from. I would say 90% of what thet sell is a by-product of another industry. A good example of that is Antron Dubbing, nobody can convience me it is not carpet clippings. The boot lace thing is right on the back of the Z-Lon package in the inventors own handwriting. Check it out! Years ago many many years ago the only thing besides feather and fur that were available to tiers is what they can swipe from the wife's sewing kits.
