Fly Tying: Galloup's Articulated Butt Monkey

The Butt Monkey was originally tied on a single hook designed by Scott Smith. Kelly Galloup put lead eyes on it and articulated it to get more motion out of the fly. The result was one of the best big fish flies out there. This fly comes to life in the water, and elicits some of the most aggressive eats from big fish everywhere. I keep at least a dozen in several colors in my boxes at all times.

Butt-Monkey additions to Loathsome Characters Wiki: Todd (Wayside): Arguably one of the best examples of a butt-monkey, he was constantly tormented and tortured in a nice but not strict way by Mrs. Jewels and Marchenia since he first transferred to Wayside School in Wayside: The Movie by having his name written on the discipline list by Mrs. Jewels and sent home on the kindergarten bus almost every day just because he couldn’t adjust to and failed to follow Mrs. Jewel’s class’s odd set of rules for her class and got himself in trouble without realizing with “Age of the Aquarium”, “Kindergarten King” and “The Note” being the best examples of Todd torture episodes.

Thanks Harry! I'd say I fish this in olive and black more than any other colors, but yes, I have a few of each color with me on the river and have done well on tan.

Would arctic fox tail be an ok substitute for the rams wool

It would be ok in a pinch Jeremy. It will wind up being really sparse and tough to sculpt the head properly, but it would work in a bind.

I haven't used the pheasant rump on this pattern Paul, but I'm assuming it's used as the throat where I have the red laser dub on this one.

How do you get them to sink? I got one from big y fly and it almost floats

I use a 250-280 grain sinking line for streamers. This one will stay up in the water column at first if you're using a sinking line. I'd suggest presoaking this pattern if you're using a floating line along with about a 7-9 ft leader.

Josh Varner thats weird, i found this streamer from hardman fishing adventures and his clearly sinks with floating line, fast enough it looks like he can jig it. Although he said before it sinks because he uses 15 lb floro

Yes, this is certainly a very good jig pattern. It should sink really well once its wet. The flouro really wont make a difference in the sink of a fly this size. I'd have to see the fly to figure what's keeping it from sinking for you.

@@scycosnake3964 Even giant 1/0 dolly llamas with half ounce cone heads will float when they're dry. When you get to the water dunk it in the water and saturate it with water, another thing that helps get it under is the velocity from your cast and it hitting the water. You definitely want to be fishing these on a sinking line though
