Great fly! I use dubbing loops for steelhead flies quite often, so this was interesting to see, but the end result just looked like chenille to me. Either way, great vid!

Nice fly though I prefer a much sparser tie (about 1/3 the material). Been using the "rope dub" technique to make tapered fur bodies for decades. To build the taper into the rope, dub the noodle so that it is tapered at both ends; then, with a simple "shepherd's hook" dubbing tool catch the dubbed noodle half to two thirds the way down and fold it back on itself; tie off the thread; advance it out of the way; then spin and wrap the body as desired. Done this way you get a durable, tapered and segmented body that doesn't need a ribbing. I actually find the dubbing rope to be faster to do than fussing with the dubbing and trying to keep control of it while wrapping. IMHO, the dubbing rope method makes a more realistic insect silhouette whereas the conventional "buggy" dubbed body looks more like a ball of lint lashed in place with a rib ...the fish have shown a preference as well. Now I know why I can’t tie my flies....I don’t have any ‘turd-aids’! Really though I love seeing variants of some of my favorite flies.
