All though i'm very frustrated with DJI locking down my Mavic Pro 2 with aggressive geofencing...I get why and thank you for making time to share this video. There are other drone options now with very comparable features in camera tech and ability that have zero geofencing.

If you have internet on the device connected to the controller when you are about to fly, you should be able to self-unlock right on the screen. Make sure you are properly logged in to your DJI account on your app before trying to fly.

That is true now. When I made this video that wasn’t an option for authorization zones. About two months after I posted this video they updated the app allowing you to do it from your device. But you’re right. I need to make an updated video showing that option now.

@@BenCapers Tell you what, I tried this yesterday and it wouldn't let me unlock, even though I had internet and was logged in, and everything updated. Really weird. I remember doing this a year ago, but it wouldn't let me yesterday. I ended up having to request a 3-day pass online and then syncing the authorization to the aircraft. I don't know what's going on. I use the DJI Go 4 app.

just wish I had known ahead of time that I'd be in an area that I'd be unable to take off in. Now, I know I can check that map and it will let me know in advance so I can request it ahead of time. super helpful. my old mavic pro (which I still have) never kept me from taking off in these areas so I never had to worry about it. that's always the problem with new technology, they put new "safety" features which really just means restrictions on there to can be super annoying.

I just got a DJI mini and it would not fly in my own back yard, because of an air base about a mile away. I contacted DJI tech support and a chat agent walked me through the authorization request process. He also expedited the request, and within 10 minutes or so I had it working. But it is still a real pain and I think it should default to not requiring permission in a residential neighborhood especially a 249g drone that is essentially a toy. EDIT: when it asked to upload "documentation", chat agent suggested I upload a blank document so I created a PDF that just said "back yard" or something, and it allowed me to continue the application. Just in case anyone else runs into this problem!

You have to receive permission from FAA first then get unlocked by DJI. You can get authorization through LAANC or the Drone Zone.

The drone will just stop before going into the restricted zone. Like it hit an invisible wall. It won’t enter a restricted zone without a license.

No. If you’re not inside one of the colored zones you shouldn’t need any approval to fly. The areas in green are the approved or recommended areas to fly.

Thanks you so much!! I live approximately 2 miles "as the crow flies" from John Glenn International Airport. In the last 2 years, I know of 3 times that the No Fly Zone has changed. Just this past spring 2020, I had no problem flying around my neighborhood. The first snow of the season happened early last week. I got my Mavic 2 Pro all updated, batteries charged, landing pad ready and went outside to take off - unable to go anywhere. I took everything back into the house and got on the DJI FlySafe page (I have it bookmarked) and there it was - our home was just inside the Blue Authorization Zone. I am a register DJI customer and have my FAA ID. So, I will try your suggestion and see what happens. I will let ya know - Thanks, Charlie

You should be able to do it in the blue authorization zones and orange enhanced warning zones. But if you’re in a red restricted zone you won’t be able to unlock it unfortunately.

LAANC is a means of getting FAA permission to fly in certain areas while this process of unlocking authorization zones through DJI allows your drone to then fly in those areas. DJI has its own protections in place to keep people from flying in restricted areas and this is their process of unlocking those. I have gotten both verbal permissions from local airports and hospitals to fly when I needed to as well as using the LAANC process prior to going through this unlocking process. That’s a good question and I hope my clarification makes sense.

so to fully clarify and stupid question... I don't need the LAANC process if I say get permission from the home owner in the area.. or does it mean verbal, electronic or written permission from the entity of why it is an unauthorized zone?

@@g-whiz9488 You don’t really need permission from a homeowner because they’re not the reason the area is restricted. Unless of course you’d be trespassing. But it’s restricted by the FAA likely because of the proximity to an airport or prison or hospital or something like that. So getting LAANC permission is an electronic form of permission by the FAA to fly in that area. That’s the safest way to do it. Again you could technically skip the LAANC process and still be able to take off, but you’re opening yourself up to trouble with the FAA. If you were approached by an investigator from the FAA, your DJI unlock code won’t protect you from them.

Thanks! I ran into this problem yesterday. I always submit my flights via the AIRMAP app, and didn't get any restrictions on my flight from them. But when I took off DJI blocked the drone from advancing into a warning zone. It was weird...I took off in a clear zone, and once I hit the warning zone, the drone just stopped like it hit an invisible wall.

Not sure about new regulations in the UK, but I just tried to unlock an authorization zone in London by the Tower Bridge and it said the unlock was successful. Of course I’m not there to try it out, but at least that went through.

No, I meant the drone wouldn’t take off even if I wanted to. The blue zones used to require authorization through the FlySafe website and wouldn’t take off without it. You can now do the same thing through the DJI Fly app without getting on the website. It changed after I made this video.
