I agree----some people think they are a Know It all and we are Stupid. Hire a Professional---LOL----I nor you need one----we are our Own back yard Pro's!!! I have put down 5 shallow wells----3 on my own farm----about 1/4 mile apart. Once I start/get set-up---its quick. One well 52ft---with a helper took 1 hr and 5 minutes to do(start to finish with pump hooked up sucking fresh water 50ft deep) ----has 11ft of 2"pvc screen---this well produces 42gpm with a good electric pump---I been using it for 30 years when needed to keep the water up in a nature made pond close to the house that would go dry during the Summer without some help---I have run this pump for a month at the time---24/7---close 2 million Gallons of water without a problem. Another well---working alone took me 3hrs---50ft deep, 7ft of 2"pvc screen, produces about 30gpm with a 5hp gas farm type pump. My set-up is fast because I am using a 5hp, gas type pump to wash it down. Sure if I was to hit rocks---this would not work. The first 2 went down quick---hit rocks on the third and had to move a little so the next ones I did a test with 3/4" pvc to see how far down a good stream is and if there is rocks before I start the well. This test usually only takes a few minutes(less than 1/2hr after set-up).

when we did this years ago, we had problems getting the gravel / sand up after we got so deep, but what we did to help us, on the second water intake, we put a compressed air into the water... we only released air into the water every so often. the air would bubble up from the bottom of the well and bring bigger chunks of rock & sand with it... Great video

Very sweet results, and very interesting video. I have lived in a podunk area all my life, where farm animals out number people 50 fold. I have never seen this done in my entire life. I live in the Thumb Of Michigan, where my well is 42’ to the water and a total depth of 60’. We also own a woods 8 miles from where I live, the water table is very high. When we drilled this well, we hit water at around 5’ then we went to a depth of 40’ the well turned out to be an artesian well, water pressure pushed the water about 1 Foot above the ground. Your method would have worked well there. This is probable an old method that was used widely, my Grandparents hand dug wells on our farm, it seems that was common in my area. But anyway very (well) done.

I live in western PA. Mine is 500 ft of 8" schedule 80 with the last 2 sections perforated and a rubber seal above them. He drilled until he hit "mountain sand" (looks white), went through it, then drilled I think 30 on the other side of the sand. The rubber gasket looked like an upside down unbrella filled with bentonite. I use a 1 HP 220v pump. If my well were 40' the water would be red from Iron, mostly disrupted from all the strip mining.

I've drilled a couple of shallow wells out by my lake. The issue you have is unless your casing is 3 or 4 inch you can't use a submersible or jet pump. Suction pumps limit out around 25 to 30 foot of lift. As they have more head pressure or in this case suction lift you get less than the rated flow. The best I've managed is around four gallons a minute(240 gallons an hour) with a pump rated for around a thousand gallons an hour. Also my home well is around 180' deep to get good water. There are two water bearing stratas above it and the top one here is around 25'. That water is not safe for drinking because the water in it hasn't been filtered by the earth for very long. Any type of spills from sewage to oils can penetrate the ground to that level and even though you had your water tested the safety of it could change at any moment.
@PastorWilliamBarhorst7 жыл бұрын
71160000 how do you prevent contamination of the lowest water table from any water at levels near the surface once you drill through them?
@711600007 жыл бұрын
You put down a well casing that seals all the way down until you reach the level you want to draw water from. The method shown won't work for that.

After reading a couple hundred comments I just had to say your perseverance is amazing from the drilling to the comments, and your sense of humor kept me laughing a lot. The best was a comment stating they would never drink your water, and you replied "the best part is you don't have to drink my water", loved it. I trying to figure out how you used a shallow well pump in a 43' well and when you said" hydrostatic pressure" all made sense. The high water table you have is less then 25' but you went down 43' to push up the good water, the bell went off in my tiny little brain. Thanks.

About 10 years ago I had to have a new well drilled. Companies where I live (and I assume this is everywhere) charge by the foot for every attempt wether they hit water or not. I paid for 4 failed attempts and finally got water on the 5th at 320 feet. The total cost for me to secure a new well was 63,700.00 dollars. You read that right, it’s was actually over 65,000 dollars with the permits, county registration fees and testing. I’d say these guys saved about 64,500 dollar on the same job. Where I live your house could be worth 2 million dollars but without a well producing at least 1 gallon a minute your house is worthless and you are not even allowed to sell it “as is. So I had no choice. The drillers call my area “rock country”.

excellent job........recommendation....... get the water tested..... it is a new well and they usually have a lot arsenic...... arsenic is broken down rock.... you will not taste or see it...... you need to have at least one test after the flushing period. that way you can find out what is in your local aquifer. make a plan for proper filtration treatment. arsenic will not kill you right away... it be like drinking a glass of water with a micro dose of cement.... after so many months of drinking your liver and kidneys turn into rocks.... this is a surface well and it is shallow......if you are in a faRm area or people in the neighborhood are using lots of round up.... it may be in your AQUAFER...... THOSE PARTICULATES TEND TO BE TOO SMALL TO FILTER WITHOUT DISTILLATION......

Travis, you are one dangerous guy!! So many projects, so many great ideas. I have seen this idea for drilling a well before but always thought it sounded too easy and if it is too easy, it couldn't possibly work. Now that I have seen someone that I know actually putting the idea into practise, it is one more item on my "to-do" list for this summer. Thanks for sharing your experience.
@Flyboytr8 жыл бұрын
+Rod McLaren My Pleasure! It is a relatively cheap way to to drill your own...actually...it is the cheapest! :) If I were going to do another one, I would use a slurry pit to reuse the water (it would flow back into the drilled opening) and be pumping compressed air into the bottom of the drilling pipe. That would force the fines up the pipe where it would be deposited into the slurry pit. Solids settle out and the used water returns to the well. Basically just more stuff for me to think about...and keep me awake when I need to be sleeping! LOL The website I mentioned in the description is full of great info and various methods. He actually put my video on his home page!

Did you have to use any bentonite for this well hole? If so, how did you determine how much to use to keep the water bearing sand from collapsing the hole? This is my problem at 10' deep on the FL coast. The sand starting at 10' absorbs all the backwash water and prevents me from twisting the pipe any more.
@Flyboytr8 жыл бұрын
Sand can be a real problem. We had several shallow sandy layers to contend with. Yes we used bentonite. It actually took quite a lot to secure a sandy layer at around 15'. You will note in the video that we actually drilled first with a 4" pipe, 20' long when finished. We did that because we were having such a problem with wash-in from the shallow sand layers. That 20' head start really helped us with our continued drilling...since the first 20 feet was secure! I was not concerned about using too much bentonite in the shallower depths, since my plan was to go deeper than than 15 or 20'. We started hitting water-sand around 40-41'. After that, we were unable to get much deeper without things locking up. After the fourth stuck pipe at 43'...we decided to call that the magic spot, reinserted the drill pipe until it locked up, at 43', inserted our well pipe with the PVC screen (10' of screen), removed the 2" drill pipe while ensuring the well pipe did not move upwards, hooked up the pump and did a test. Then we removed the 20' piece of 4" pipe and added two bags of pea gravel and then filled the hole with drilled sand and mud. We let the pump run for 24 hours to clear the well. It is still working perfectly. Hope this helps!
@bgufford8 жыл бұрын
Yes that helps and thanks for the reply. I will try to find the bentonite. I can't seem to locate it around here. I only have to go 19-25' deep but that is all sand. Thanks again for the video!!

Please, Tell us how you finished the well. Did you drop more casing? 3" inside the 4"? How did you keep it from collapsing in on the drill pipe at such a depth? I am in sand with no casing so far, and using a 2'' drill, and stick the pipe continuously. after 12 feet! I'm gonna try and drop a 4" as far as I can. Then step down as necessary. I am next to the creek at the bottom of the valley and may have water at 10 feet.

Bobby, I used two bags of small pea gravel. I also joined two 5' sections of well screen together to increase the surface area. You may have hit a water sand layer that has very little water...I have read of that happening.
@bobbyaultman32728 жыл бұрын
so you pulled out the 2 inch pipe then poured the pea gravel down hole and installed your well point. I looked at a lot of the videos and NO one shows installing pea gravel and well point being installed . they leave out the most important info.

Bobby, Negative... I inserted the 1.25" pipe (with well screen attached) down inside the 2" drilling pipe; then started removing the 2" pipe without accidently pulling the inside pipe up. Once the 2" drilling pipe was out I then poured the pea gravel down the hole around the outside of the 1.25" pipe. I hope that helps! :) Also...I would suggest to wash the gravel to remove the fine clay that is usually stuck to it. If you don't, all the sediment will contaminate the water and it may day days, or many gallons of water, to get the muddy cloudy water pumped out.

@ludditeneaderthal7 жыл бұрын
roy hoco you would need to brace the pipe to prevent bending it, but then the pipe will bow, break, or at least just carve a funnel shaped fox hole. when pros use a drive shank or collar, the stress is radial/axial, while your idea is wholly tangential. that means your efforts will want to rip it out (uneven force application). it could be done, of course, but the rig would be pretty heavy, ungainly, and costly even if only in time spent making it work. better to add a handle or 6, or extend them for leverage, and tom sawyer locals into "having pool party fun", lol. alternatively, shanghaiing a crew is a viable option...

A suction pump is limited to a depth of 30 feet if your water table falls below that then that pump will not work. You need a jet pump (2 pipes) or a submersible pump in which case you may need a larger diameter casing/well.

My static water depth is about 8-10 feet year round. So for me a different system will not be needed. Thanks for the input!

How did you build up your sandscreen, like length, diameter and what kind of material. You have a perfect, clean and constant flow, and that's the problem I'm struggling with. I have plenty of water but because of one or another reason, after a few times of using it it completely stops. I live close to the beach, just a couple of meters above sea level. Thanks

GIVE YOURSELVES A BIG PAT ON THE BACK!!! Coming up In Alabama in the 1960 I helped my dad put down many wells on the property for my granny, ant, and uncle. Back then we used galvanized pipe with a sst point we drove in the ground by hand. I once put down a 6" steel casing about 30' using a water hose and a 4" pipe with a leather boot in the end to lift the sand out. Extremely hard and back breaking. Back then we didn't have no city water, we had no place to test the water. Didn't even think about all the crap I have read on these comments. Where we were the water table was below sea level so you didn't haft to go down far. My grand maw lived to 92. Guess the water was ok. Great job!!! Oh and one more thing to some of the people leaving comments. Grand paw always said ( if you don't have anything go to say keep your mouth shut)

Hi there I watched your video and you make it look so easy let me explain my situation I have 40+ year old well it's down 30 something feet also pipe size is 1-1/4 inches I stuck a half inch PVC pipe down the inside of the pipe I bottom out at 13 foot now of course my dad put it in and he is no longer with us to REALLY verify it went deeper but from my neighbor was present when it was put down and he says it should be at least 30 ft I'm scratch my head like how are we still getting water at all. But a month ago I started pounding my own well in 2in steel pipe it's down 15 so far and it has 6ft water in the pipe already. But main question is is there a way to pull the sediment out of the old well or is it better to keep working on my new well? I would like to do well like you guys did but I really don't understand it and I never seen one being done before if I can get as deep as you 42-43 ft shit my water would be good enough for fire truck pressure wise . Fyi I live in South Jersey I have very soft dirt till 10-12ft starts getting little hard do you think PVC drilling would be a better option than my sledgehammer and 2in pipe?

Do you have any suggestions on how to unstick a pipe? We have a 3" pipe that is stuck in the ground at 33'.
@Flyboytr8 жыл бұрын
Heather, I pulled up the 20' section of 4" pipe we had put down. We also stuck the gray drilling pipe 3 or 4 times....at around 40'. You need to use a piece of chain and use a "clove hitch", starting at the bottom and working up. So the long piece of chain need to be towards the bottom. I would also add a 3rd or 4th loop/clove just to be sure. You will need something like a 2x8, 8 or 10' long. Put a block of wood or cement block next to the pipe so you can use it to support the short end of your 2x8. Lay the 2x8 against the chain and then wrap the chain around the board and the pipe in such a way that the board will not try to twist/turn as you lift up on the long end. I have had several people ask about how to do this. I guess I really need to do a video showing how it works. Anyway...I hope that helps.
@heatherlentz79018 жыл бұрын
We have a tractor. Could we use that in any way?
@Flyboytr8 жыл бұрын
It would depend on the tractor. Just attach the chain to the bucket and lift gently. My tractor would not lift the pipe...but I could pull it using the board/leverage method. Try the tractor first. The key is getting the correct hitch around the pipe using the chain. Also...that hitch will easily slide down the pipe and will lock when you are pulling it upwards. Make sure the clove hitch is snug around the pipe. :)

This is fun to watch. I think you aren't drawing water from nearly the depth you think. Maybe I am mistaken but I thought that atmospheric pressure was ~32ft of water. Your pump is sucking, not pushing. This would mean that the water would vaporize at 43ft (or 33ft for that matter).
@Flyboytr5 жыл бұрын
The water table we're in is under a bit of pressure. Static water level in the pipe is at 8'.

I thought it was impossible to suction lift water more then 23 ft. Where did you purchase your pump? I like the big 4 inch casing.How has it held up? Thank you
@Flyboytr7 жыл бұрын
Redwood, just because I am pulling water from 43' doesn't mean that is where the water level in the pipe is. My water level at last checking was at 8'. Water tables carry some pressure. That is why they can push water UP the pipe. You also need to rewatch the video. The 4" casing was removed. It was only in place to help me get through a very sandy layer. Thanks for asking.
@jbncnow4 жыл бұрын
You need a 55 gallon drum and a 3 to 5 hp trash pump sucking from the 55 gallon drum for the volume of water, a water hose isnt enough volume, you can add bentonite to the drum, i do this all the time
@jbncnow4 жыл бұрын
You need a valve on the pump to vary the flow on the intake side NOT the output!
@desertrcaz8 жыл бұрын
Is this a sand point system?
@Flyboytr8 жыл бұрын
+desertrcaz Yes, I used two PVC sand points that were 5' long, cut the point off of one and glued it to the other one to make the entire sand point roughly 10' long. Thanks for the question.

I dont think that I have ever seen water that clear from a well..which mountain does that come from? are you guys near arkansas or mississippi? I am pretty sure that if we drill 150 feet here in Louisiana we hit some kind of arkansas artesian water or something like that..please will u educate me on this if u can..I think its very interesting fact that a lot of people do not understand where the REAL FRESH water comes from and not from a bottle..LOL

At around 8:40 you got stuck immediately after closing the pvc valve at the top of the drill head. Do you think closing the valve has anything to do (vacuum/ air pocket at bottom of pipe) with getting stuck and would opening up the valve maybe made it easier to get unstuck again? Great video, thank you very much!
@Flyboytr8 жыл бұрын
Closing the valve didn't have anything to do with it...good catch, however! :) We had maxed out on bentonite and even with it we were getting a sand-in/collapse. Our water would stop the upflow and just start flowing into the water table....and boom...stuck pipe. We did this three times and had the same result each time around this depth. So...that was basically where we stopped, 43' deep! Our water has continued to get better the more we use it. We're super pleased with the results...just need a stronger pump! :) Glad you enjoyed the video...thanks!

Shallowest water on our farm: 275 feet; best water 400 feet.It takes a big rig to drill/workover a well here. Minimum charge for pulling the pipe and putting it back in: $10,000! Plus all the pipe, pump, wiring and casing.... it gets very expensive.

How did you come to know when the water that was coming out around the pipe was well water and not the water from your hoses?
