I'm not even at 10 hrs in the air yet, but have 53 ground handling hours. Yep, I'm tracking those. It's paid off in spades already in a few high wind launches in the mountains! And so fun!

Now I want to go out for some ground handling!

At first I didn’t want to ground handle, just fly. After many failed forward launch-high-wind attempts in South Africa (with an instructor) I realized I had a long way to go (only 37 flights and about 3hrs by then). Now I have my own wing and learned to reverse launch last week. It’s not just safe, it’s also SO much fun. Can’t wait to get back at it.

In case of high wind do reverse take off keeping the C carabiner in your hands to depower the wing. I learnt my take off technique in Ireland this way. I dont worry about 35 km /h anymore even its a dis.. "windgusting" condition

Great video…I have to thank my PG/PPG instructor for really drilling the importance of ground handling into me right at the outset of my training. Thankfully, I love kiting the wing to this day and really feel it gives me a huge advantage in my comfort level at the launch. I have to cringe when I see pilots launching who obviously missed out on this critical aspect of the sport in their early (and ongoing) training (esp. PPG pilots). Moral of the story…keep on kiting and practicing ground handling…A LOT!

You can do a lot without the slope too 🔥

Without slope, its mostly agriculture over here... yet i agree, i was totally impressed what i learned in only one week at pilat and i did only scratch the surface of the amazing things i'd love to learn through groundhandling...

2023 was by far my worst season. Guess what? I did not groundhandle.

Yikesss! Sometimes it is hard to believe how many pilots forget about ground handling 🔥

What do you think is the most crucial aspect of enjoying a long flying 'career'? 🤓

A long term commitment to consistently and humbly self-reflect on the quality of your own decision making and plug the gaps in your skills and knowledge. (Google “Why Can’t We Get A Handle On This Safety Thing?” for an excellent USHPA article about this!) Don’t think “I didn’t get hurt this time, so my decision making must be excellent”; instead think “X had the potential to lead to a bad outcome, so I’m going to take a note to practice/research Y to improve my skills & knowledge for next time”. Ground handling, ground handling, ground handling! A super fun, fairly low risk way to build essential skills! Quality training! Take a notebook with you and log each session - what were the conditions & were they suitable for your skill level, what did you achieve, what went well, what could have gone better, what skills will you aim to practice next time? Clear and strict personal limits… (“X wind speed is top end for me, so I won’t fly if it’s stronger, even if I’ve driven for hours and am really excited”) or (“I won’t practice that new tricky skill unless I’m in a safe box with plenty of altitude, a safe landing spot, and somewhere where I won’t get blown into hazards if I have to throw my reserve”). Super consistent, diligent preflight checks (I love Greg Hamerton’s “CHILL OUT” preflight check routine and I practice it as part of my groundhandling). Mental preparation before every takeoff that you may need to throw your reserve. Out of control? Quick check of altitude, throw if low or if altitude uncertain. (See Theo de Blic’s excellent talk “How to become a safe pilot” on Nova’s KZbin channel). Regularly chatting to other local pilots to fill in the gaps where you don’t know what you don’t know.

Excuse me but.... groundhandling for improving take offs and groundcontrol in difficult situations? Sure! For improving flying? No way... can you train spins on the ground? Na. Full stalls? Na. Wing overs? Na. Collapses? Na. Spirals? Na. Basically nothing that is happening while you are in the air, works on the ground. Groundhandling important? Yes. Overestimated? In my opinion also yes.

You clearly don't know anything about paragliding. I really hope you are not a pilot. If you are then good luck in your flying career.
