Philip, finally got out and tried my version of your bait fly. I added a little weight to it. I must say one of the best flies I've fished in some time. I caught my first two small mouth in the first five minutes. This is a great pattern. thanks again.

Your pattern is great- solves a technical challenge I was having with the foam and the pattern not floating correctly.

Hi Phil! I bought a rod thru you last year, a fantastic guy to deal with! Love the rod BTW. This is a great minnow pattern Ill be sure to try it! I started tying flies a year ago and I love to tie obscure patterns and try them out! Thanks for sharing with us! :)

Hi Phil, I've been tying a very similar fly for use in the bay for quite a while. I add a tiny bill at the front witk a small split shot up the leader depending on how high off the bottom I want the fly to ride ro not at all with a a floater on top. The small bill makes it dive and shimmy like a crankbait. Works like magic for tough fish. Give it a try :)

Thanks Mark, sounds interesting I will give it a try next season. Cheers, Phil

Looks like a great pattern Phil! Are you able to suggest an alternate (heavier) underbody material, as opposed to the foam? Say for sea run cutties in faster moving streams? A sinking presentation maybe?
@PhilRowleyFlyFishing11 жыл бұрын
Hi you could use lead wire if you wanted. I might chose a line that pulls the fly down also. I believe trout like to be below their prey as they love to push the minnows against something. Either weed line, rocks or the water's surface.

Will this pattern work if we upsize it. To a size 6 and up to a size 4 hook
@PhilRowleyFlyFishing5 жыл бұрын
Hi, this pattern will definitely work when upsized. I have tied them as large as size 4 for walleye with good results. Thanks, Phil

Nice! I have some orange doll eyes. Will those work too?
@PhilRowleyFlyFishing11 жыл бұрын
No reason why they wouldn't work Eric, particularly if your local forage fish species have orange eyes.

so Philip, any opinion on scent tranfer from you hands to the fly and how that affects fishing.
@PhilRowleyFlyFishing6 жыл бұрын
Hi I am not crazy or super fussy about scent transfer on my flies but with that said I am careful with what I touch both during the tying process and especially when I am on the water. When tying I wash my hands and when on the water I am careful not to transfer boat gas, sunscreen or juices from any food, especially fruit that I might have eaten. I hope this helps, thanks, Phil.

always great advice, fishing has been off for me the last few trips. wondering what I might be doing wrong. If you ever come to Salt Lake please let me know. Thanks again for the help.

Anytime. If all goes well I should be down in the Salt Lake region in the spring of 2019. Thanks, Phil

great pattern, would a larger pattern work well for bass?
@PhilRowleyFlyFishing6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. I tie larger ones for walleye on my local lakes and use a fast sinking RIO In Touch Deep V-VII and a short leader to drag them down. Thanks for the kind words on my video too. Cheers, Phil

Hi phil what size of mylar tubing should i use for size 8/6 hooks?
@PhilRowleyFlyFishing7 жыл бұрын
Hi James, I would use medium most likely or large depending on the minnow profile you are trying to suggest without comprimising the hooking ability of the fly. Thanks, Phil

have you had any luck catching panfish on this fly by chance?
@PhilRowleyFlyFishing9 жыл бұрын
+Michael Brothers Hi Michael, sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I am certain this pattern or a variation of it would work for panfish. Unfortunately I don't get to chase panfish and bass on the fly as much as I would like. The times I have it has been great.

maybe cut foam so you get a spoon shape infront, it will push fly down like a wobbler :)
