Thanks for these videos and this series! Being new(er) I've learned a ton from so many of you all and while, yes, it's a bit overwhelming at first...if I pick one pattern, I can tie it up and see progress in my skills and the quality of the fly. One question: Could you do a "skill builder" on say, the "waste" or what to do with it?! I tie smaller patterns and try to burn up the scraps but I'd like some of your thoughts!! Thanks and have a great weekend!!

We could do something like that. Some materials are just used once and thrown away. I think the better topic is maybe a skill builder that talks about how to reduce the waste?

Cheech, thanks. Another great instructional video. I think someone else said it first, but tying deer hair finally makes some sense after this video.

As always so very helpful. For ME...that deer hair technique was the most understandable yet. Gives me great confidence in starting to make deer head flys.

I have been using Norvises auto fly bobbin and you can do a loose thread wrap. All you do is pull out a length of thread then trap the spool with your pinky, do your wrap then slowly release the spool (so as to not snap the thread tight) until the bobbin hangs freely. Works great!

But then you still have to deal with the goofy tension for the rest of the fly. Lots of guys like them, but I don’t love em.

Another reason to twist the thread is to get it to “jump” onto the hook and materials. You can see that in the deer hair tip. The thread jumps backwards.

Great work! Nothing wrong with holding the blade between the fingers and a tool that doesn´t allow to flex it it worthless in many situations. But Stonfo has made a great tool that holds the blade just the same way, for a very reasonable price. Even while cutting, the radius can easily be adjustesd with one hand.

On the double edge blade, to prevent getting cut take a piece of masking tape and fold over the half you're not using. When the first side get dull, put tape on that side and take off the first piece of tape. I have started using two different colors of tape, so if I put it down with both covered, I can still remember which to remove. NO MORE BLOODY FINGERS!

Might help. IMO still too much handling of the blade.

Can you do skill builder with ways to put materials on the hook side/up facing side/belly of a jig hook? I'm trying to make a jig version of the masked marauder, and they are coming out quite wonky, looking not to mention the 3+ finger stabs each attempt 😂
