Can I beat Pokémon Emerald using Hardcore Nuzlocke Rules when the type match-ups have been inverted?
Normal Nuzlocke Ruleset:
1. Fainting = Death
2. Can only catch the first Pokémon on each route (Species clause applies).
3. Nickname Pokémon
Hardcore Nuzlocke Ruleset:
4. No items in battle (held items okay)
5. No leveling past the next gym leader/E4 (at the START of the battle)
6. Play on "Set" battle mode

The whole point of nuzlockes, in the beginning, was to tell stories. I remember reading the original nuzlocke webcomic years ago. The failed runs are as important as the victories. If every story ended in victory, what would be the point of telling them?
@Gibstack
@Gibstack Жыл бұрын
I think I (we as a society?) have forgotten about this aspect. I mean, a lot of the animated story videos of nuzlockes probably hit the mark. But taking nuzlocking so seriously/so competitively probably takes something of that away. Interesting thing to remember.

As a matter of fact, that very first nuzlocke ended in defeat.
@PelemusMcSoy

I'm currently going through a randomized nuzlocke of White, and I've already failed once at the first gym. The first gym trainer had a freaking Dialga that crushed my precious Shelmet (Burgundy), but was defeated by my tanky Umbreon (Charcoal). The gym leader then laughed as his Ferrothorn whittled away everyone else on my team. I rerolled the randomizer and started again, and have since made it to the second gym. For my story, I ultimately plan to tell the "successful*" run. However, I want to incorporate the failed run(s) into this story. One way is to make reference to horrific events, like the Dialga encounter killing Burgundy being a nightmare. If this run is successful, it would shake my character (Prism) as she has a Whirlipede named Burgundy; this plus seeing her starter Chimchar is always so jumpy in combat (he has a Timid nature) makes her vow to protect her Pokemon no matter what. *Successful may not necessarily be defeating Ghetsis, but at lest completing the objective of finding Prism's dad and maybe solving the mystery of what happened to Unova.

Ok, he could have kept the defeat AND also restarted. It's not like anything precludes him from re-attempting the challenge just because you're "trying to tell a story" (which, for the record, is something I appreciate) I wouldn't mind even if it was a separate video after he took a break

I used to read a lot of the nuzlocke stories and I can assure you the ones with zero deaths were just boring. There was no interesting overcoming of adversity, just a lot of patting oneself on the back. The ones with lots of death were more interesting.

The letter to Steven: "Dear Steven, I'm at an all time low. The divorce papers came in and it looks like your step-mother and I will be officially separated in the eyes of the law by the time you get this letter. I know it's been a long time coming and I shouldn't be surprised. But a small part of me thought that we'd make it through this. A small part of me thought that she just needed to blow off some steam. That's why I paid for her flight to Sinnoh. So that she could explore other relationships and find that what we had was special. But I was wrong. What do these Probopass have that I don't? Is it really worth throwing away everything we had? Worth walking away from her son? I'm so alone. All I have for comfort is Nosey's hugs. But he socks at hugs. Because he's half Nosepass. It's like hugging a giant rock with flailing human limbs. Pretty creepy actually. I know you won't return home, and I respect that. But I'm your Dad. So, I'll keep sending child postmen to let you know that I love you. Love, Daddy Stone."

Might I recommend a Pokémon ultra moon nuzlocke with only Pokémon that change type when they evolve? As in a type gets swapped like Onix getting rid of its rock type for steel when evolving into Steelix Ultra moon is unique in that it has practically every Pokémon that changed type expect for the poster children of the gimmick: nincada and azuril. (And some Pokémon with regional forms that were added later) What’s also interesting about this is the encounter layout as only rowlet and Onix are found on Melemele island, with the remaining are spilt evenly between Akala and Poni island, and no encounters on Ula’Ula. Which means you have to get through Olivia’s trail up to the Lusamine fight with 7 available Pokémon at best before suddenly opening a bunch of new dragon type encounters. On the plus side, the Pokémon available aren’t the most commonly used Pokémon The Pokémon that change type are the following: Rowlet (swaps flying for ghost) Onix (found via island scan on Sunday) (swaps rock for steel) Eevee (swaps normal for another type) Surskit (swaps water for flying) Ralts (found via island scan on Tuesday) (swaps it’s fairy for fighting) (dawn stone isn’t until after necrozma) Fletchling (swaps normal for fire) Cubone (swaps ground for fire and ghost) Larvitar (swaps ground for dark) Scyther (swaps flying for steel) Exeggcute (swaps psychic for dragon) Dragalge (swapped water for dragon) (also ultra moon exclusive) Altaria (swapped normal for dragon) (only found in red portals in ultra space) Drapion (swapped bug for dark) (only found in green portals in ultra space)

Lliramuza may just be my favorite nickname ever. And Daddy Stone's letter is pretty depressing this time, at least we know Nosey can give hugs, creepy as they may be. I love these kinds of challenges- honestly, I think the challenge itself of bending your brain around swapped advantages and disadvantages makes it more satisfying to see when you goof (ex. sending laocrot in to take the solarbeam, which I wouldn’t have noticed otherwise bc it made sense normally) so I think even imperfect challenges are worth the watch!! Your sense for storytelling is superb either way and I always enjoy it immensely :)

I don't know if this inverse challenge came before Blaze Black/Volt White 2 redux, but i really felt that you were getting frustrated with that series and challenge mode's unfairness. Inverse battles are an awesome, creative idea for nice locks that I would love to see Triton other generations as well. It can get a flight to many unexpected heroes that usually get overlooked

I love repeatedly pressing the wrong button and re-watching the start of the ad instead of skipping it. Great video as always, Don't know how I missed it for a year.

A very interesting run! I feel like some of the results of inverse typings made some of the gym leaders easier or harder than before and that's a refreshing change of pace.

Great video my man, was enjoyable to watch and I liked the way you handled the end, along with sticking with the seemingly failed run. Since this is inverse locke I want to mention an interesting thing, there's a popular and difficult fan game called Pokemon Reborn, and with the latest big update it added settings to change aspects of the game. One of those is an inverse password. There are some other passwords too, one that sets all the opponent's pokemon to have 252 in every ev, and a password for each mono type. Some absolute masochistic mad lads have started and completed runs since then with the inverse and 252 in all evs password, as a *mono steel* type run. Nicknamed, the Tinverselocke.

I'm a big fan of these unique gameplay challenges. Type-specific nuzlockes are fun but a bit predictable, but I love when you have a premise where I have no idea how you're going to solve incoming problems. Stuff like this, the snaplockes, etc are really enjoyable. I'd love to see some sort of extra-ultra-hardcore-nuzlocke at some point. Like extending from how you give a couple extra rules for kalos runs but even crazier (could be like "I can only use 3 move slots, I have to edit my pokemon to have 0 IVs and EVs, etc).

I appreciate the upload of this nuzlocke to change things up. It's pretty humbling to show that things don't always work out, but that's ok. And I also support the self care and try8ng to avoid burn out. It seems like a lot of creators are starting experience it so do what you feel is right man.

Great challenge and well played. :) I hope you know, there isn't pressure to put out only videos where you win, or to go that extra mile to restart. Seeing a run where you lose is refreshing, especially given how hard fought it was.

If I had a nickel for every time a magneton speed tied a dustox, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice.

Yo Flygon my man 💪🏽💯 Just wanted to say I really love how you got more confidence and speak with more enthusiasm and vigor in your voice in your more recent videos. I started over watching your videos for a second time and you were verrrry I mean verrrrry monotone in your first several videos. So keep on keepin on man you make great work 💪🏽💯 insprifed me into a nuzelocke of my own with Firered. (Suuuuuper frustrating tho 😂 killed my charmeleon early 😭)

At first I did not see the naming scheme because I thought you were seriously naming your treecko "Elit(e) Pecs" and it wouldn't be too far off considering the run (and my bias). Fun as always! Lovely to come online to find a new HG video!

long time fan, just commenting to say that I really like and support the decision not to tell us the outcome or give us clues to if the nuzlocke was 100% completed. Really makes the videos that much more exciting. Also, do whatever you need to do to avoid burnout. We all really appreciate the amount of content you come out with as it is and I think most of your fans prefer to watch your videos knowing that you were enjoying these challenges rather than really grinding out something that was very taxing for you behind the scenes. Thanks!
