Yes, it did not look natural to have afterburners and lift off like that.

Can someone explain to me? why do they have the 2 seater vers of jas? They look beautiful but are they built only for for training purposes? and if so isnt that quite a expenssive approach? Or can the 2 seaters be used as fully functional war planes?

In the begining of this month, JAS Gripen airplane were scrambling, when a group of Russian airpalnes (2xSukhoi 24, 2xSukhoi 27). Violated Swedish airspace. The two Sukhoi 24, were armed with nuclear armament.

22 seconds take-off roll is terrible performance for a modern fighter.

This was at an airshow were the audience were at the far end of the runway. So I guess the pilots rolled bit more in order to have a take off within visible range of the audience.

@@oscarharaldsson4137 It's because the Gripen C/D can't take off in short time. Thrust-to-weight ratio is poor due to lack of power. Look at a JAS-37 Viggen, any teen fighter, any other 4.5 Gen, the F-22, and F-35s. They all take off within 9-12 seconds.

@@LRRPFco52 This is more a masturbation of statistics. However the JAS 39 has a Thrust-to-weight ratio of approx 1:1,06. I don't think this is far from the competitors. At least not when considering the design choses and the theather it is designd for. sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saab_39_Gripen wikipredia.net/en/Thrust-to-weight_ratio JAS can be at an altitude of 30 000 feet within less then 60 sec. I do not think 22s roll is part of the "jaktstart" (scramble take off).

@@oscarharaldsson4137 Whenever you see1.06:1 mentioned for Gripen T/W ratio, it comes from Wikipedia, not the real world. I’ve done extremely detailed analysis of Gripen C/D and E T/W ratios using stated empty weights, internal fuel, pylon weights, weapons, etc. from Saab and end-users of the Gripen series. A combat T/W ratio with only 50% internal fuel and a few A2A weapons still has it at .92, not over 1. Especially on take-off, it will never be even close to .92, but far less than that due to fuel fraction. Most of the advertised claims of Gripen performance are to hide it from real scrutiny by Riksdag, so they don’t see how anemic it is.
