In May 2014, we trekked to Everest Base Camp in Nepal with two drones: a DJI Phantom and a TurboAce Matrix. This was my 7th visit to Everest and once again it was the adventure of a lifetime!
The resulting aerial footage in this video is the culmination of nearly a year of training, planning, crashing, experimentation and exhilaration. The ability to capture these unique views with a drone was amazing. Perspective changes everything.
When we arrived at Everest Base Camp it was mostly deserted due to the tragic April 18, 2014 avalanche that killed 16 Sherpa and Nepalese guides, and the subsequent cancellation of the Spring climbing season on the South Side of the mountain.
Many thanks to my incredible staff of Sherpa guides and porters who made this trip possible and hand carried the fragile aircraft and support gear over these high altitude passes as well as up to Everest Base Camp. I could not have accomplished this goal without their generous help, hard work and sincere friendship.
Thanks also to my wonderful 2014 Himalayan Workshops clients for their enthusiasm and support as I was constantly repairing, charging and obsessing over the drones. Sharing the experience with them made it so much richer.
For more information on my equipment and process, please listen to Chris Marquardt's Tips From The Top Floor podcast where we discussed my plans for this trek: www.tipsfromthe...

When I was in my twenties, I trained to climb Mt. Everest but I took up smoking cigarettes and became a heavy 4 pack-day smoker instead. Now at 72, I can look back and say...cigarettes saved my life! I am still somewhat fit and was yearning for another adventure...scuba diving. I quickly gave up diving and added alcohol to my daily regimen instead. Heavy, daily alcohol consumption became my savior! As of today, I have not had the temptation to drown at 160 ft below or have my eardrums rupture, thus alcohol saved my life too!

Jerry Bruce Thanks Jerry. Only issues were reduced flight time due to the need for the motors to spin faster to provide ample lift. Flight time was reduced to 7-8 minutes per flight with 8000mah 6s LiPos. Otherwise, performance was no different. Amazing product. I was flying a Sony NEX 6 most of the time. Only Renjo La was filmed with a GoPro.

It is glacial meltwater and the glaciers create a lot of fine, powdered rock debris that gets washed away by the water. This debris makes the water appear turquoise when sunlight passes through it. :)

I wonder how far up the drone would fly ? Probably wouldn't be a good test. I've heard stories of helicopters pushing the limits with altitude including crashes up there. Can't recall the limit in altitude for a full size helicopter ?
@TheRestofEverest
@TheRestofEverest 9 жыл бұрын
I feel confident I could fly up to 20,000 comfortably. But, I'd have to be controlling it from higher too since the biggest issue is battery life. As for full size helicopters, I've seen footage of a special one actually setting down on the summit. Not typical but possible. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYmxiYaso6ingaM
@TH-jt8eb
@TH-jt8eb 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that link. The only previous footage I'd seen was a dicey flight much lower bouncing up and down for a rescue of someone with HAPE or some other serious issues. The copter kept losing lift over crevasses. Watched a recent video of a chopper rescue off the seracs in the Khumbu recently after the avalanche.
@danielmocsny5066
@danielmocsny5066 8 жыл бұрын
A battery powered drone should have an advantage at high altitude over an air-breathing helicopter, since the drone's electric motors do not lose power in the thin air, as all combustion engines do if they go high enough. The ability of the rotor blades to generate lift in the thinner air also decreases with altitude, but should be less of a factor.
