I was lucky to spend some time with him at a conference. I am part of the Military Funeral Honors program and he attended our annual conference to tell his story. The best part of the week long conference was when he stuck around simply to chat with us and tell war stories. All of my people are retired Army, most of us are combat veterans and we work with the current generation of warriors to give the final military honors to our deceased. He fit in really well.

What a tremendous honor Martin. There has to be a special place in heaven for those such as Woody. My only good landings are when I'm by myself. I hear you on "helping" the autopilot I have to tell my MD11 and 767 captain plane partners this regularly as they seem to try and use the Comanche's Century IIIB like a 100k plus FMS. I always enjoy reading the citations of these incredible men who have received the Medal of Honor: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as demolition sergeant serving with the 21st Marines, 3d Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 23 February 1945. Quick to volunteer his services when our tanks were maneuvering vainly to open a lane for the infantry through the network of reinforced concrete pillboxes, buried mines, and black volcanic sands, Cpl. Williams daringly went forward alone to attempt the reduction of devastating machine-gun fire from the unyielding positions. Covered only by four riflemen, he fought desperately for four hours under terrific enemy small-arms fire and repeatedly returned to his own lines to prepare demolition charges and obtain serviced flamethrowers, struggling back, frequently to the rear of hostile emplacements, to wipe out one position after another. On one occasion, he daringly mounted a pillbox to insert the nozzle of his flamethrower through the air vent, killing the occupants, and silencing the gun; on another he grimly charged enemy riflemen who attempted to stop him with bayonets and destroyed them with a burst of flame from his weapon. His unyielding determination and extraordinary heroism in the face of ruthless enemy resistance were directly instrumental in neutralizing one of the most fanatically defended Japanese strongpoints encountered by his regiment and aided vitally in enabling his company to reach its objective. Cpl. Williams' aggressive fighting spirit and valiant devotion to duty throughout this fiercely contested action sustain and enhance the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.

What a great privilege to be able to fly this hero to this event. What an amazing man on an amazing mission. At a time when we see some people trying to erase history and allow the great accomplishments of men like this to go forgotten for future generations, his work is greatly needed and appreciated. Thanks Martin for sharing this fabulous experience. And that wasn't that bad of a landing. Things always feel a little different with more people on board. Good one. Martin with all the recent loss of control crashes on climb out into IMC is it possible for you to do a video that even a non instrument rated pilot could understand on setting the autopilot right after liftoff to allow the plane to be stable even if entering zero viz conditions prior to a breakout? Airline and Corp pilots do this immediately and there is no reason others should not know the procedures.
@martinpauly3 жыл бұрын
Hi James. I think I understand where you are going, but I do not want to make a video like that. One, there are so many different autopilot installations out there that what I should could not be universally applicable. And two, I believe the reliance some pilots have on using the autopilot more or less full time is the problem, not the solution for these light-GA accidents. You are correct in that airlines operate differently, but they have much more reliable equipment, and their training and their procedures prepare them for this kind of operation in ways we simply cannot in the light GA world. For us, the better answer is to practice hand flying regularly so that we are comfortable doing it when needed. Best regards, Martin

There was nothing wrong with that landing, Martin. I don't think you're too used to having so much weight in the airplane and you added power as you should have. You made it sound a lot worse than what it looked like to me.

The vast majority of the time, a passenger or other lay person will never notice a less-than-perfect landing, or a wrong note in a musical performance, or an imperfection in a piece of furniture, etc. So don't bring it to their attention.
