Which South American Airline do you want me to fly next? Let me know 😅

Avianca. Begining in July 2024 they are supposed to re-start their Business class service within South America. I live in Toronto, and have been thinking of going to Santiago Chile, if it is any good. Their price is half the price of LATAM/Air Canada, so I am a little apprehensive. Thanks Josh. Great videos !

Hi Josh. I'm glad to see your latest video flying Ecojet's Avro Bae 146-200 I understand your concern about safety on board a fairly old aircraft but I watched you getting aboard unknown airlines flying the old Boeing 737-200. I am Bolivian and left La Paz in 1969 My first experience was flying an old Curtiss C-46 that was testing its new overhauled engine. So, talk about not being scared. Of course at the time I was only 14 yrs old. I moved to the United States in August of 1969 to study aviation. I worked for Delta Air Lines until retirement in 2014. I continue enjoying all of that free travel worldwide on Delta and other carriers. My most recent trip was in 2019 on Delta to EZE and Aerolineas Argentinas to Santa Cruz and Boliviana BOA to Cochabamba. I also wanted to go to La Paz but run out of time. Watching your videos brings back all of that good memories of rtavel, specially in Fist Class. Thanks for visiting Bolivia. It is a beautiful country. Next time stay longer in La Paz so that you get used to the altitude. Keep up the good job

Josh, do not worry. Bolivia is famous for old airframes and from my times of living in South America, I remember the many old propeller planes that were used to fly cargo within Bolivia. So, many pilots are trained to fly old planes and operate under sometimes very difficult conditions (meteo, technical, logistics). They often are more experienced in masterin difficult situations than many pilots in other countries who only know planes with latest technology. In Bolivia you will get to your destination and I cannot recall an air accident in that country in recent years. Safe travels.

Interestingly, there is an Flight Manual supplement for the BAe 146 to allow it to operate from airfields like those in Bolivia due to the high elevation of the airports reducing the take-off performance.

I have decided not go to La Paz because 18 years ago I spent 5 days in Johannesburg and being not well (altitude sickness combined with lifelong asthma). La Paz would be the end. Those AVRO RJ/146 were a little underpowered. There is a story about one flying from Syney to Brisbane during a hot Australian summers day and air-control had cleared the plane to an altitude. Knowing that the conditions were not good the pilot was told to report when at altitude. After some long time air-control reminded the pilot he should have reported in at altitude. Response was hang-on we still have 500 feet to go.

A plane in turbulence is like a grape in the middle of a block of Jell-O. When the Jell-O moves and shakes, the grape does, too - but it can't fall down. Also, planes are made to withstand forces that most passengers won't be able to withstand. ;) Just leave your seatbelt on whenever you sit and you won't get hurt. Might it be uncomfortable? Yes. Will you die? Very unlikely. 🎉

I used to live in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Been flying a lot domestically particularly between Cochabamba and Santa Cruz over the years, probably the most trafficked route in Bolivia with several departures daily. Usually with the nationally-owned BoA airline. One thing that struck me too is that the landing in Santa Cruz tends to be always butter smooth, something about the air over there. La Paz on the other hand is an airport where you don't really land, just pull over and park. Many years ago I flew with BoA from Santa Cruz to Miami. I read up on the airplane, one old 767. It was one of the airplanes in traffic at that time, that had been with the most different owners registered. This plane had an incredible history of being all over the world since the 1990s. Eventually, around 2022 they made news in Bolivia when BOA (supposedly) retired those old long-haul 767s and had them replaced. Around that time I got on my latest flight from Santa Cruz to Cochabamba with BOA. A short 50 minutes jump. I almost freaked out when I boarded the plane. It was one of the old "retired" long haulers 767s from their Madrid or Miami route than they had put in to offload Cocabamba-Santa Cruz. So incredibly weird to sit in that huge old wide body ocean liner in front of a dead in-flight entertainment system, and not even making it do decent march altitude before descending. My choice of airline in Bolivia used to be Amaszonas, they had a small clean and seemingly well maintained fleet of Embraer 190. Crammed but smooth and quiet flying without dealys. They also had some international routes to neighbor countries. Unfortunately they were grounded in 2023. Due to some economic problems or formal incompliances. Never tried Eco-jet.

Josh, I can relate to the altitude sickness. I grew up at sea level and one summer we went to Breckinridge, Colorado, about 9,000 feet. So I think it’s similar altitude, maybe a bit lower. Anyway, I was in good shape and went to run on the treadmill and it almost killed me. I can do 8 minute miles forever at sea level but there I was done after one! I was shocked. The rest of the day I felt like I had a raging hangover, pounding headache, fatigue, etc. You get acclimated but it takes a few days. Anyway, I sympathize completely with your situation. Enjoyed the episode as always.

La Paz is a very spectacular place. Bolivia is a beautiful country where one can easily cure fear of flying. Just travel once by bus between any two cities and you will never more worry on an airplane. However, there is a risk you won't enjoy Bolivia so much if you have the slightest issue with dogs, be prepared to face dirty street dogs running loose in every corner in every city. That's the main hang-up I have with Bolivia, having spent many years there. I can't understand why the people accept living like that, not owning their own streets. Rabies is an issue too. Apart from the dogs it's great.

For what it's worth, the BAE146/Avro RJ series were literally built for short takeoffs and landings - hence the four engines and big airbrakes. I used to see them fly into LCY all the time, where a 737 or anything larger than an A318 can't go. So the aircraft you flew in on would actually have more trouble getting lift!
@josh37717 ай бұрын
The Avro certainly has a soft spot in many of our hearts. It's an interesting equation on take-off distance, the 737/320 should have to account for having enough thrust on takeoff if an engine fails and has allot of reserve built in. The Avro only needs to account for losing 1/4 of its engine with lower margins
