Airbus have narrow body version as A320 ceo which is known as Current engine option and the latest model is A320 neo which is an upgraded new engine option. The old version has 4 variants A318 , 319, 320 base model and A321 which was a stretched model . We will see rarely A318 as only few airlines of Europe are operating there. A318 has very limited seats. In New version A320 neo have only 3 variants 319N , 320N , 321 N and even 321 have 3 sub variants 321 N , 321 N LR ( Long range ) and XLR ( extra long range ) . The seating capacity are almost same in both old and new versions but new models are more fuel efficient. If you look at engine then the neo have bigger diameter compared to old ceo model . You travelled in A321 ceo which was an outdated aircraft of AI .

What you experienced at Chennai airport, I experienced the same recently at Delhi airport but in reverse. My international flight arrived at the domestic area of T3 and we were deboarded from the right side and taken by bus to the interational side of T3. Reason also the same as yours. The aircraft's onwards journey from Delhi was a domestic one thus it docked at the domestic side.
