A quick flight from Southampton to Lydd in the Black Square Bonanza in Microsoft Flight Simulator - experimenting with the KNS81 RNAV computer, and flying a straight-line route between projected waypoints from VOR stations. A fun exercise!

To me, aside from general hobby enjoyment, this is where MSFS shines. Opportunities to study navigation systems and put them into practice. Love it.

I forgot how much fun this actually is! Remembered i downloaded the free USA VOR maps just for that purpose. THanks for the reminder! Steiny here! Nice (tailwind) landing btw. Very nice explanation with lnm as well!

I agree, Jon. Great info. I always wonder about RNAV. You explained it so even I can understand it. 😉

Nice demo. One small point, a heading of '000' is normally expressed as 'three six zero' in aviation. Similarly '090' is expressed as 'zero nine zero' and so on.

Yep - I often find myself walking a line between using language that non-pilots will understand, and radio-telephont language. Of course then you have the whole subject of "fife", "niner" and so on - probably a good subject for a video at some point.

Thanks for that brilliant video. It’s in the manual somewhere that they would have needed to build a whole new autopilot model as they are overlaying on the msfs model. So they say to fly using heading bug and using HSI for guidance

Rnav is so cool, so much more interesting. We are spoiled by GPS. I wonder how much longer VOR stations will last.

Hmm, none of my airplanes have the Bendix/King KNS81 that I have found so far. Is that unique to the Black Square Bonanza or do you know of any other planes with it? Also been through many planes on the marketplace looking at the panels and didn't notice any with that.
@shanesdiy

I think I figured it out, seems to be part of the Black Square steam gauge overhaul kit so only available to planes with that kit as an option? Caravan, King Air, Bonanza, Baron, TBM850... Is this correct?

@@shanesdiythe only ones I've found it available in have been the Black Square birds. Just picked up the Dukes as a bundle and they're a blast for IFR. Actually just shot the PASV ADF approach with the turbine duke a few hours ago.

Excellent video, learned a lot from it. One question, could you use the ILS frequency to set up another position/waypoint to intercept the ILS rather than just use a vector?

Great explanation on how to use the KNS81. One question regarding LNM. How did you draw the straight line route from departure to destination with the radials off the various VOR's? Cheers, Steve

Interesting presentation, somewhat outdated by GPS I guess. In fact most people nowdays seem to assume that RNAV is associated with GPS rather than radio signals. Don't quite understand why in NAV mode the autopilot NAV function doesn't work as I assumed the driver for this would be the OBS indicator. Is this a fault in MSFS?
@jonbeckett
@jonbeckett Жыл бұрын
It does appear to be, yes. I need to double check it in the P2012. I read that it's a bug in the generic autopilot programming of the sim - but some aircraft might have fixed it ? I'll find out.

@jonbeckett

Yes - absolutely - waypoints based on vectors from VOR stations.
@kamaradski1
@kamaradski1 Жыл бұрын
yes, that is a great way of thinking about it. RNAV is navigating the radials of your fixed waypoints, essentially creating custom waypoints indeed.

Why is the ILS course so far off the centerline of the runway? I thought this would only occur to avoid any obstacles alonge the runway centerline.

are you just using heading mod at about 90deg
@jonbeckett
@jonbeckett Жыл бұрын
Yes - using heading mode - but monitoring the HSI, which is showing the route to each projected waypoint via RNAV. I deliberately chose a simple to route to make it easy to illustrate.
