All y’all bashing the plane and pilot have never flown a skymaster in Ann airshow before. This isnt a very agile aircraft and is not supposed to pull g’s. Some of those low hard turns he did were impressive.

One needn’t pull high g’s to at least roll the thing. It’s capable of loops at 4 g’s. This was just boring. If you want to say that’s just the nature of the 337 then, ok, we can agree on that.

I used to roll my 337 regularly. Originally G- BOYR but I put her on the Russian register as RA-4147. Until the UK CAA stepped in. Amazing aircraft and a joy to fly. Happy Days!

Equally fine book as well - and what a great story that really happened! I read that book in my twenties, I guess, and loved it, but I have to say that now, at 60, the part where it talked about Col. ‘Ham’ being a ‘40-something’ year old intelligence specialist nearing retirement, who worked a console aboard a B-52 at 40,50, even 60,000 feet, and probably 500 or 600 kts. ... well, I get that part a lot better, now. It’s tough enough surviving bailing out of a b52 and then surviving alone behind enemy lines in the jungle when you’re 18-19-20 yrs old ... but doing that at, say, 45, 46, 47, with 25 year old survival training, barely able to survive the air conditioning going out, or having to sleep on a cheap mattress, well ... I tell people all the time - I can still do a lot of things I could do 40 years ago, it just might take longer, ... I might make a loud noise when I do it, ... it might hurt, ... a lot; ... I’m going to need a lot better reason to do it than I used to need, I might not be able to do anything ELSE for a week after that, but most importantly, I am keenly aware that I am still more than strong enough to hurt myself in just an instant of inattention. Just because I CAN pick up and carry 2 feed sacks at once instead of making 2 trips doesn’t mean I SHOULD. Somehow saying it that way (I’m still strong enough to hurt myself) is less emasculating than “ I’m too old to do that kind of thing any more ...” wow ... I just meant to say I too love the skymaster and the movie that you mentioned, and y’all wound up with an essay you didn’t ask for... sorry about that...

@@keithskylerkingnelson3378 Hi Keith. In the first 25 seconds, check out the registrations on the aircraft in the background and notice the writing on the sailplane trailer. You can also hear the conversation around the cameraman from 7 minutes to the end. Perhaps that Skymaster is "supposed" to be in Wisconsin, as you state, but I have flown aircraft in England, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Kosovo, Iraq, Macedonia... that were "supposed" to be in various locales in the U.S. Like cellphones, airplanes tend to travel a lot. But it was just a quick guess, based on the name of the flying club Aeroklub Split at 0:20. I walked around in Split, Croatia about 10 years ago. Met a bar owner near the top of town who was keen to practice his English, looked into the price of real estate, and visited the marina. Nice place.

@@daveriley6310 With all due respect, and bear in mind I have been flying since May 20th 1980, have been an owner as well , ( 1975 Cessna 177B Cardinal ) I do know The FAA, and maybe Department of Defense might take interest if United States registered owners were claiming Onalaska Wisconsin United States as home base, and perhaps using 991DM for nefarious purposes. Indeed I do know US insurance companies would be having Hamsters if they thought the '69 337 was NOT in the LaCrosse area, but involved in some Balkans intrigue. Now, if Red Bull is footing the bill, it ain't a cheap date, but Navy and Air Force Intelligence might be wondering. K Walter

Great oldie, and I think it actually happened. At least this one was told amongst the instructors I was friends with years ago... A student pilot is on his first cross-country solo, and asks for flight following on a busy day for ATC. After giving a pirep to ATC, the controller asks: "Are you a Skymaster?" Student replies, "Well, sir, I dunno, but my instructor says I'm pretty good."

I love the Cessna 337! It's not an aerobatic show plane anymore than a Cessna Caravan a Learjet is but still cool as hell. I believe they even have their own specific type rating of "Twin engine - inline" which separate from normal twins like a Piper Commanche or Beechcraft Baron. They also did great service in the USAF during the Vietnam war doing counter insurgency and light ground attack missions!
@Tom-zs6bb

The rating is called a centerline-thrust restriction. I did my checkrides for my ME and Commercial ratings in a Skymaster but I had to demonstrate Vmca in a conventional twin before I could log PIC time in them.

barndawg77 is correct. You could accurately say that not all Skymasters had retracting undercarriage, but C-337 means it is retractable. However, I do know of one 337 that the owner had the gear retract system disabled. It was the first thing I asked him about when I saw the huge tundra tires on it. He flew in and out of unimproved sites and, when I asked about rear prop fod damage on gravel strips, stream beds and beaches, he said he considered rear propellor blades a routine replacement item. Hubs and brakes were also modified. I've flown dozens of C-337s and have one now here in Alaska. But because of the frequency of gear problems and the expense related to maintaining the retraction system, my next one may be a 336.

My flight instructor called it a "blow-sucker". It became a favorite of mine even though I never flew it. But, I did fly, with my instructor, from Ypsilanti, MI Willow Run to Kalamazoo. With enough money (that's what makes airplane fly) the cooling problems of the rear engine and noisy cabin can be somewhat overlooked. Riley conversion was very interesting.

Gloves are bad for manipulating tiny buttons and also for trying to pick up anything small.. I was still impressed, if the pilot is not capable or doesn't have the experience or training to pull off extremely difficult maneuvers then we shouldn't expect him to fly outside his limits. Which is why I'm sure his flight at the airshow will be controlled and safe and it should be.

Wasn't this the same type of airplane that lost both of its wings during a slight pull-up when some Polish pilots tried to demonstrate the flight characteristics of the airplane for a potential buy out? The pilot went a little too fast and pulled up slightly and the wings fell off? The video must still be on YT somewhere. I'm not crazy about aircraft that have four bolts holding its main spar onto the main body. Unlike the Mooney M-20 series that had a single spare that could take at least 12 G's before the skin would buckle, I wouldn't trust any airplane that depends on four bolts to hold the body together. Sorry, even though I grew up learning in Cessnas, I'll take a Mooney M20 C class any day before a Sky master, ( i.e. bug smasher). JMHO DPA

Steep turns, Chandelles and low passes? Should have given the plane to Bob Hoover before he passed away.

I love the plane. I was assigned to the 21st TASS Vietnam 1970. We had the O-2's with two hard points for rocket pods. We frequently came back with bullet holes in the horizontal stab.

Try losing the gloves and keep a hand on the throttles instead of both hands on the yoke to get a better chance at a greaser.

The Skymaster has many structural limitations compared to the Shrike and trying Bob’s routine in it would be suicidal.

I had the gear doors stay open on landing, It took almost full power on both engines to make it to the runway.

I could never figure out the reason for the aft engine. Seems it only was good for more weight and god-awful noise That air frame cleaned up and a T-56 Allison turboprop up front would have been a jewel.

@@sickbear1489 There have been single-engine conversions done with 337s. If going to a single, it is actually better to have that single engine in the rear. Huge difference in available thrust and reduced drag. And I have shut down the front engine on 337s and similar aircraft multiple times. In flight, I mean. On the ground it is better to do it the other way around.

@ Sick bear. The Allison 501 is 4000 HP and with a prop on it, it weighs as much as the Skymaster weighs empty. The Skymaster would literally flip over or be ripped apart from the torque or the speeds required for it to produce the required lift and stabilizing force. The extra engine is for redundancy. Even though it’s underpowered it still produces a lot more power than an single engine with a broken camshaft or thrown rod.
