FLYING CAR by Airbus & Italdesign

Airbus and Italdesign world-premiered Pop.Up, the first modular, fully electric, zero emission concept vehicle system designed to relieve traffic congestion in crowded megacities. Pop.Up envisages a modular system for multi-modal transportation that makes full use of both ground and airspace.
The feasible concept is the result of Italdesign and Airbus’ joint reflection on how to address the mobility challenges of megacities achievable for a majority, which has become one of the most pressing issues for commuters in megacities worldwide. With traffic congestion projected to hugely increase by 2030, the companies decided to combine their engineering expertise to tackle how to best achieve a sustainable, modular and multimodal urban mobility system - giving rise to the Pop.Up concept.

The modular design of the Airbus is truly an innovative approach to merging ground and air transport systems without the messy ""mighty mechanoid" flip-out-around-invert dynamics most concept ground/air vehicles employ. Modularity also approaches the weight limitations problem associated with battery power quite effectively. I really hope this concept proves out as it is really a well thought out, amazing design innovation.

The difference between cars and horses is that cars are more efficient. They're faster, require less energy to run and less maintenance. Flying vehicles are the opposite, especially quadcopters. They're slower than cars and gobble enormous amounts of power. This is not the future.

I don't see a reason to dismiss this project as impossible. Obviously not gonna happen anytime soon, but I wouldn't be surprised if these systems would start to get implemented in the 2040s.

Limited or heavy computer assisted manual pilot would work great for flying this vehicle. So a joy stick or some sort of simple fly-by-wire control that allows the vehicle to be manually flown if desired. Virtual boarders and sensors could keep multiple vehicles flying at a safe distance and within designated legal fly zone.

Das ist eine sehr durchdachte Lösung für Geschäftsleute aller Art, die ruckzuck überall sein wollen und müssen. Da wird sich die Baubranche riesig darüber freuen, das dann auch neue Gebäude gebaut werden, die Flugplatz, Parkhaus, Werkstatt, Ladestation und vieles mehr in sich haben kann. Einen Vorschlag habe ich noch, für Bootsliebhaber wäre ein schwimmender Untersatz auch eine Option. Da habe ich gleich noch eine Idee, Rettungsfahrzeuge aller Art und sonstige Helfer Organisationen damit auszustatten wären auch überlegenswert. Lieben Gruß aus Deutschland

the fact that it is not controlled by the passenger makes it the best idea I've seen for bringing in human drone transportation. The drone unit can be controlled and directed just like airplane navigation. and the ground unit can use the new self driving car technology. In This way the company providing this service can have what unit they need where they need. and it will be safe since all units will be controlled under one navigation system. my only concern is the noise pollution from the drones.

Might happen in very modern and wealthy city/states such as Dubai or Singapore where there is tons of money and the local government can give this multi-modal transportation system a jump start. It's not just the technology, it's also the safety certification and the integration into existing transportation and associated traffic control systems.

There is no such thing as a flying car. A car cannot fly, it only drives along the ground. If it flies, than its an aircraft, and we have plenty of those. What we don't have is a small aircraft that is cheap enough, quiet enough, safe enough, and easy enough for a common person to own and use.

We all need this level of technology in the agricultural world. Better crops and farm appliances. Better technologies for shelters to get intercity young people out of trouble gangs and onto high tech farms with some iPads to keep them learning to grow stuff instead of procreating babies in the cities that they can't feed. If we all have to drive 25 to 50 miles/kilometers to jobs and groceries then we clog up the roads and streets. We need to live in habitats closer to where the jobs are. Most jobs in the cities take extremely more education and IQ, therefore an organized effort to get the brawniest youth to the county on farms is better than letting them become gangsters in the cities.

Why not focus on making a safety cover for humans that will ensure people will not die in case of airborne malfunction. That may let you fly your project that otherwise is practically unrealistic.

The initiative is actually interesting but nothing really new taking into account that it based in drones technology. I think that a flying car constructed with ant gravitational technology without the need of airscrew exactly like we can see in the movie (THE FIFTH ELEMENT) with Bruce Willis would be much more secure and advanced way to develop the human being transportation through the skies . I`m looking for more time and resources to work on it.

An autonomous vehicle that drives to the location of which the rotor attaches to the vehicle is a better concept than a flying car with wings because you wouldn't have to go to an airport.
