I have visited the Irazu twice. Once in 1962 and again in 1994. My fathers side of the family lives in SanJose, and in the summer of 1962 we went for a visit, I was 7. At that time the Irazu was very active and would frequently cover San Jose in a blanket of ash. It had calm down some by the time we arrived but would still puff out some pretty good sized cloud of ash and steam but nothing major. I don’t know the geology of the volcano but it’s not a lava producing volcano, at least it wasn’t at the time. Its big eruptions consisted of explosively produced huge plumes of ash imbedded with large boulders that would rise up thousands of feet in the air but no showers of lava like you see from other volcanoes. I guess since it had been relatively quiet for a couple of weeks my father and uncle felt it would be safe to drive up to the crater and check it out, which we did one early morning. The “road” then was not the nicely paved road of today. It was an ash covered Jeep trail you wouldn’t want to tackle without 4 wheel drive. We arrived at the crater as the sun was rising and were greeted by constant, cold strong wind hitting our backs as exited the jeep and walked down to the crater. We actually parked right were the paved parking lot is today and took the same path to the crater as you would today. The secondary crater you pass on your right as you walk to the main crater was much smaller then it is today. I guess it grew during the eruptions in the 80s. We were standing at the edge of the crater in the remnants of what had been an observation deck which had been destroyed by the rock bombs years before when felt a rumbling begin beneath our feet, and just a few seconds later..BOOM! A huge bellowing cloud of ash came racing up from the crater, climbing thousands of feet in the air in a matter of minutes. You could also see these huge boulders flying out along with the ash, and lightening within the cloud. And all this was happening right in front of our faces. Our savior was the strong wind at our backs that persisted, blowing everything away from us. Normal people would have run for their lives. We however stayed for a couple of hours, posing for pictures and home movies and taking in the spectacle of this major eruption taking place right in front of us. The wind also spared San Jose from the 3 inches of ash that covered the towns and villages downwind of the volcano that day. It is to this day, THE most spectacular thing I have ever seen and most likely ever will see. Two weeks later 7 people were killed were we had been. On that day the wind was calm and they were buried by the ash and rocks.

Muchas gracais!!

Hola Juanin, muchas gracias!

Wow! That looks amazing. Mavic should have very good wind resistance. I have watched some other videos with relatively higher speeds and there was no problem at getting a stable shot.

luckily when I flew it the wind had dropped considerably, so it was not a big problem :)
