An excellent description of VRS. As a real world pilot, a good rule of thumb is below 30 knots no more than 300 fpm descent. You can stretch that a bit, but for most that will work fine. That applies into the wind, downwind add 10 knots.

I was going to take classes to become a helicopter pilot, but I just called and cancelled them. This is all the instruction I need. Seriously, how is someone even going to get a helicopter without a license or an instructor? lol. Anyway, I enjoyed the video very much. It was very helpful in my real pilot career ... in DCS. Thank you.

Not a chopper pilot myself, but just a bit of exposition of my understanding regarding the steep flare. The real crux of the issue is just that you don't want to change collective rapidly or abruptly in any situation. As you know, changing the pitch of the blades changes their drag, which changes the load on the system. With the collective (pitch) low, the load decreases, and the tendency will be for the rotor and engine to speed up. Consequently, the engine governor will reduce engine power to keep RPMs within limits. Then, if you jam the collective to high pitch, the load on the system suddenly increases while the engine is not producing much power, causing the RPM (and your aircraft) to plummet; the governor does not operate instantaneously and lags a bit in responding to changes in system load. Overspeeding the rotor in the steep flare just exacerbates that gap, and increases the lag time even more. Often, just long enough for you to crash.

Hey Dslyecxi I watch a lot of how to videos for DCS and x-Plane. I just want to say you are a very good tutor. You don't spend a lot of time with useless information. Everything that you covered was right to the point. I was taking off and flying around within about 45 minutes after I got my controls bounded and watched your tutorial. I'm now practicing landing after transitioning from level flight. Your info on Translational physics was very helpful in getting started. Also the operation of the trim button was golden info. Thanks, keep them coming.

There are helicopter tutorials, or rather, videos of people getting their first lesson here on youtube. It's crazy how little stick movement is necessary. They often say "you can almost just think where you want to go, and your hand will give enough force to affect the helicopter". It's so different from what I've always thought it would be like. Guess it's cause I have problems with highly sensitive controllers. But it does make sense of course.

I've been leaning towards getting the TM Warthog for a while, but always knew that the experience would worsen compared to my trusty MS Sidewinder FFB2, despite its lack of buttons*. Great to hear a first-hand opinion from someone who has both, thanks. * The customisable 'modifier' key feature of DCS still allows me to get lots of functions on my FFB2, such that I can get 80% of the main HOTAS keys for the A-10C on it!

Dslyecxi, your helicopter-vids are truely inspirational! I've been flying helicopters in Arma3 for a while now (using a mouse and keyboard). I finally got around to ordering a Warthog HOTAS kit and some decent pedals. I found a video on how to remove the big spring in the Warthog to alleviate the centering-effect some. I'll be acquiring the DCS Huey "DLC" once I get confirmation that the hardware has shipped, because I'd like to get training in how to fly helicopters properly and bring that into Arma3.

I learned about all of this stuff years ago when I was doing the helicopter side of my aircraft maintenance courses.. It's cool to see it done practically though(much more understandable), this video probably worth about 4 hours of that class time. Most of it was gone through in a manner of "the many ways a pilot will break their toys and all the work you will have to do to fix them". I would say contrary to the disclaimer, this could be used as applicable to the real world as this stuff would all be right out of the textbook. And remember, the only thing keeping your mast on is one bearing, so say a little prayer it wasn't built on a friday afternoon.

Very impressive video Dslyecxci! I'm amazed by how much you've managed to pick up on your own just practicing. Although when you were demonstrating ETL, what you called "not a normal takeoff" was actually a perfectly demonstrated normal takeoff. Look up "Height-Velocity Diagram" in a operating handbook and you can see the path used for normal takeoffs. Other than that great job!
@dslyecxi
@dslyecxi 10 жыл бұрын
My impression (which could very well be mistaken) is that you would give at least some collective to counter the minor sink that happens from pitching forward. By "not normal" I really just meant that I wasn't touching the collective at all, not even a little bit. I probably could have said that better in retrospect but hopefully it got the point across.
@TheCipher29
@TheCipher29 10 жыл бұрын
***** Yeah sorry, I was indeed mistaken by what you meant. But in a normal take off the collective actually shouldn't have to be pulled any more than hover power at first assuming good conditions. You slowly accelerate through ETL maintaining a few feet of altitude then once you reach the proper airspeed dictated by the Height-Velocity Diagram you raise the collective to takeoff power and start your climb out. This takeoff of course isn't mandatory, it's just recommended to avoid the shaded area of the H-V Diagram and can be tweaked to fit the takeoff necessary.

I bought one of those cheap toy helicopters from ebay. Flying with it was surprisingly interesting, more difficult than I expected. Howering with it is difficult even without wind, all the adjustments you need to make constantly, how everything is connected, how quickly it reacts. Trying to keep that sense of control and how fast everything gets fucked. Very different from driving a car, you just can't rely on anything, everything is on the air so to speak.
@mglohmeyer
@mglohmeyer 10 жыл бұрын
I assume you are talking about a simple coaxial (dual main rotor) helicopter. Move up to a collective pitch RC helicopter and it's even more difficult. I'm flying a collective pitch heli (TREX 500), but it took me 3 years of practice (mostly in an RC simulator) to reach any basic level of competence. Finally I'm able to do flips, fast turns, fast controlled descents, and auto-rotations, etc. But because RC helicopter rotor speeds are so high (2K to 3K RPM), things like vortex ring state don't affect them that much. It's more like flying in ARMA than flying in the Heuy in DCS. Also, with modern gyros, we don't have to worry about tail rotor inputs that much due to collective pitch changes. RC helis are more twitchy than a real helicopter (even with a 3 axis gyro), but the real helicopter still requires a lot more understanding of how not to crash.

I flew Hueys 30 years ago. This sim is darned close to the real thing. Really brings back some memories. My biggest criticism would be the lack of anti-torque pedal authority. I've turned up adjustments to the max and still don't get the positive smooth response you get in the real thing. Cyclic and collective are pretty close. I'm using TM pedals. Wondering if that my be the problem or maybe its the flight modeling. Also, way too much panel vibration during translational flight. If we had one shake that bad we put it back on the ground for a track and balance session. I flew several model Hueys, Hughes 500 C and D models, S-62, and learned in Bell 47 D models. Wanted to live a long healthy life so quit flying helicopters and concentrated on fixed wing instead.

I read in a book that the Huey is balanced tail low, that's why you are moving forward on collective pull. I also read for hover references that you use two references, one nearby and another far away. The tendency when using a close reference is to chase it all over the place...that's your rock n bob thing. I can't wait to get my hands on this game!! Need a faster computer though :-(

I'm loving the video but I have a question since you more or less said to not use pedals in high speed flight, are you supposed to ignore the turn coordination ball in high speed flight or what? because flying with a level bank and high speed doesn't keep the ball centered and yet it looks awkward when you apply rudder because then your nose is not travelling in your velocity vector so I don't know what to do I'm a big fixed wing guy normally so I'm just used to trying to center it

Great video.. I just got my DCS huey, I ordered a Force feedback stick, I have tracker IR, and plan on ordering pedals. Is it possible that you share the binding settings that you use for the HUEY? I would love to have them if possible. I do check the DCS forums and steam forums often trying to find what I can because as a newbie I get totally lost trying to set them up. I am new and have not figured out how to e mail you etc. But I will check the Arma site and also DCS forums to see if I can find you there.. Again.. great video... Thank You for posting it.

11:00 I do it that way as well. Problem: On the AV-8B harrier, it works the normal way around as that's a normal jet most of the time. And when I'm howering, suddenly muscle memory from helicopters kick in, which, together with the harrier's sensitivity means a meeting with the ground.

Is there any other Joystick that you can recommend? The MS ForceFeedback2 is really rare on german ebay, and if you find one, quite expensive. I don't wanna spend too much money on a joystick, but I'd also like to have a good one :)

Quick question... Can you please make a video on how to start the Huey and also maybe the black shark? Especially what the different buttons do.

I just want to make it clear that I am fully aware that DCS is a much higher level of realism than for instance ArmA or any other games for that matter, but how would you feel about this level of detail and difficulty in piloting in Arma?

I think helicopters would become useless except for the rare moments a competent pilot was on the server. Otherwise they would be flying coffins or bombs at best.

He's talked about this before. He think's its a bad idea. I believe he said that the accessibility of ARMA's flight model is good, because it's easy to learn the basics, but still takes a lot of practice, and if you made it super realistic and difficult, it wouldn't be fun for new players.

Think having the extra realism would add to the immersion so would be good. If Arma could accept third party "plugins" like DCS for aircraft and Steel beasts for the armour combat would be a great way to provide that higher level of realism. It wouldn't be trival to do (eg how do you handle different phyics requirements) but it would stop these developers having to spend time on common areas like the graphic engines.

NumptyGrumble Arma 3 Helicopters DLC will make Take On Helicopters' flight model _available_ in Arma. Google for "ARMA 3 ROADMAP 2014/15" and "dslyecxi take on helicopters flight model".

Hello Dslyecxi, I'm new to the scene of flight in Arma 3 and was wondering if you could recommend a joystick for Arma. As I have joined a Milsim group and we focus on the air. I figured I should get something, as I already have pedals and a TrackIR. Thanks for the help! -Dustin

+Anthony Pavlak - I'm on Windows 7, no problem with it. It's the USB variant, for what that's worth.

Josh Brooks I'm not *****, so I wouldn't know his peculiarities, but I would think promising to badger someone incessantly would put them off rather than endear them.

***** Josh Brooks Dslyecxi has stated before than pestering and repeatedly applying within the same "recruitment period" will quite literally harm your cause in relation to getting into Shacktac. I.E Apply at appropriate intervals should you not get in the first run. I believe everything is done monthly but don't take my word on it, check his website.

Hey Dslyecxi, I'm a recent sub, about 3-4 weeks old but I was just wondering if you could do a tutorial video on how to start-up and take off in the UH-1?

Frooglesim said, that this is one of the hardest simulator helicopters to fly, and he has loads of experience from flying simulators like x-plane and FSX.

How do the rudder pedals work with the trim system? Is the spring centre moved on them when you trim, or does the game assume they're force feedback too and leave them alone?
@dslyecxi
@dslyecxi 10 жыл бұрын
afaik there are no force-feedback-capable PC rudder pedals, so in the context of DCS/Huey, the rudders aren't part of trimming.

Just ordered my Force Feedback, have my Trackerir, getting a x 52 throttle to use as a collective. Is it possible that yo can share you Huey Bindings per your great video with a newbie who gets lost trying to set it up.
