Flying on the Lancaster Bomber

This is on my bucket list. My great uncle Arther John Boar was a Bomber Command Lancaster Navigator. Shot down off the coast of Holland June 22nd 1943. His remains washed up on the island of Terschelling 4 days later, where he now rests in peace in the Commonwealth War Grave Cemetary.

Just imagine a Wing Commander at age 24, able to fly from England, at night, at low level-100 feet or less and navigate to precision bomb dams in Germany-a location you have never been to in daylight, all while people are shooting at you at near point blank range. This took real skill, courage and guts that would be hard to find in such large numbers today- I salute everyone of these aircrews. I have visited these dams in daylight during the 1950’s, the shear size and locations are daunting to say the least. Bomber aircrews got a raw deal after the war, we owe so much to those brave men.

My father was a Lancaster pilot with the RAF. Dad always enjoyed seeing the Lanc fly over us. He also enjoyed being a member of the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum.

You can fly in this plane, but it's not cheap. Basic Warplane Heritage Museum membership is $125 CDN. To upgrade to Bomber Crew Membership it's $2500 CDN. That allows you a one hour flight in the Lanc. I live in Ancaster, which is just a few miles from Hamilton Airport, so I get to see it fly over the area once in a while. It's always a great thrill to me, when I hear those engines I run outside to watch it fly over. Never have flown in it, but have seen it in the museum.

My Granddad did 29 war ops in an Avro Lancaster with 630 sqd. as a flight engineer, the rear gunner is a Canadian who I believe is still alive. They where hit by flak, shot, had the whole windscreen blown out & the Canadian rear gunner was once stood over a football sized whole in the rear while still shooting at attacking night fighters. Brave Men!! The 'Lanc' now resides in a field in Germany. Soberingly for Me, it was being flown By another crew that night. RIP to the seven Men of 'P'

My dad flew Lancasters on mapping missions, 14,000 hours on Dakotas, even flew the De Havilland Comets out of Ottawa while on 412 (VIP) Squadron at CFB Uplands. Went on to Air Canada and the L-1011s there.

Amazing! A Lancaster just flew over my home in S.Wales, Uk, after an appearance at the Swansea show, it's a yearly thing but I never get tired of seeing this beauty flying low in the air! I live by the airport and they park here overnight ready for the same show again the next day. Incredible planes! Esp when accompanied by the Spitfire and Hurricane, which happens some years too! I live in the US. Theres a group that tours the country with a B24 and up until recently a B17 (which sadly crashed a month ago). I know what you mean... they come every year (RIP B17), and it never gets old. Literally seeing a time capsule flying in the air, over modern buildings, etc.... its very surreal. Need to get out to the UK or Canada to see a Lancaster some day. Amazing aircraft.

This is my favourite plane every year my town has an air show but one year it was raining and the weather was horrible and wewere just about to go home i heard the amazing nois of the lancaster and look up to see it flying low right above me it look as though i could touch it thats when my love for this magnificent plane started

There is quite a few old posts here, from when I write today. The British, as a nation and the Free World, owes much to it's survival to the dedication and sacrifice given of it's Allies in both WW1 and WW2. The Canadians at Ypres and the Anzacs at Arras. The South Africans at Delville Wood. The NZ Typhoon pilots over Nazi flak in the Lowlands of Belgium and France. The Lanc crews over the Reich by night, our friends the US 8th Bomber Group B17s by day. Thank you all! Brave Men. RIP

On the 4th of May, when we Dutch have the remembrance of the dead, and the day before we celebrate liberation day of WWII there was a Canadian Lancaster officer that liberated my town giving a speech. After all those years he still had a fine sense of humour :)

Canadian warplane heritage museum in Hamilton Ontario has many vintage WWll aircraft. Many of them get flown regularly throughout the year. You can book demonstration flights on the Lancaster and other vintage aircraft. The museum is well worth the visit

I have saved up since before COVID to fly on this bomber as I live in the UK and we can't fly on the BBMF Lancaster, and we can only taxi-run on the Lincolnshire Lancaster "Just Jane". I bought my museum membership today as the flights go on sale tomorrow - so excited! I'm pretty sure I'm gonna cry throughout the whole flight :D I came to see Vera and Thumper fly together with the Vulcan in the UK a few years ago, it was amazing - so historic!

The WW2 party, Hurricanes, Spitfires, Dakotas and Lancaster’s. All of these aircraft, especially the Lancaster are a magnificent piece of machinery. It’s incredible how they managed to build these back in WW2, and still they fly today! So wonderful, yet so unfortunate of how many were shot down and all the lives that were lost. We will never forget those who fought for us.

the Grand Slam bomb (22,000lbs) were only ever carried by 617 Squadron, The Dambusters, and were used very sparingly as there wasn't a great deal of them built, and the aircraft had to be specially modified to carry them

soaringtractor Well, according to the great book of world war II airplanes, about 30 B.1 (special) Lancaster's were given that task. The Merlin 24s were " specially" overhauled and modified by R R. Grand Slams were first delivered in Feb. of '45. All found, 41 were dropped.

The Lancastor has never been referred to as the Avro Arrow Lancaster for as long as I can remember, I'm 49 years old and remember when they brought this plane in from Goderich On. by Chinook helicopter (the wings by truck) 1976 I think. My father was an RAAF Squadron Leader flying sorties over Germany in the Avro Lancaster. He was pinned the Distinguished Flying Cross by King George VI at Buckingham Palace at war’s end. He never crowed about his role in the war, but I do believe he suffered greatly from what was then called shell-shock -- now today’s PTSD. His plaque is ensconced at the NSW Garden of Remembrance, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. RIP dad.

Great video. I was based at RAF Scampton a few years ago and know too well the vital effort the Lancaster crews gave in defence of the free world. Respect from over here in the UK 🇬🇧🇨🇦 I served alongside our ANZAC brothers and sister in Afghanistan and I am very proud to be a part of our great alliance which is stronger than any other in the world! The Lancaster is a British plane. The four MERLIN engines. Were made in Castle Bromwich Birmingham England.. The Dam busters pilots were based in R.A.F. Scampton Lincolnshire England. They flew out from there on the night raid to bomb the Dam. Some of the pilots were Canadian. Respect to the Canadians and all who took part in it. Very brave men. On a very dangerous low flying mission. Bless them all.

According to the various books and manuels I have on the Lancaster, it was only the Avro Lancaster, and Aero is not mentioned, Avro came from the company's original name of A.V.Roe

more like this is the plane the RAF used to get the job done........after all the RAF did send over 100 into Berlin at night to level the place and only a 2 thirds of the lot returned.....they also only had around 20-30 fighters to protect them from other fighters and around 10 of them where American the rest where British. Berlin proved how good and tough the Lancasters where.apart from that good video and your extremely lucky to be flying in one. :)

Actually, the Lancaster was simply just the AVRO Lancaster. No Aero. There is no reference to this aeroplane ever being officially known as the Avro Aero Lancaster. The full Manufacturer name and title is A.V ROE Lancaster which is where you may have gotten the aero from - A V ROE

This Canadian built Mk X Lancaster was built with the PACKARD Built in USA Merlins, 400 in Canada and 3,040 Mk B III's built in England ONE HALF of the total production used the Packard engine. FYI the other flying Mk I in England has the British built engines,...FYI...

Actually this plane didn't carry the 22,000lb because only certain squadrons were outfitted with it, and he bomb bay doors were removed. This plane has them.....
