This is really cool. I would think a lot of you have seen or felt these spider webs floating in the fields. Have you?

I have walked into spider webs before and not just in fields. In and around wooded areas, too. They're not always easy to see in time to avoid walking into them. I'm always happy I don't get the spider on me along with their web.

They're actually using electricity as well as the wind to fly. The wind provides the sideways motion, but the lift is generated from the charge of the web. The Earths surface holds a slight negative charge, the web has a slight positive charge. As well as the upwards motion, the charge also helps repel each strand of their "balloon" away from the others, helping it catch the wind.

I was hang gliding in the Sequatchie Valley at the Tennessee Tree Toppers launch site and strands of webs caught on the flying wires and on my wing. It was pretty crazy. I picked them up in flight!

That's called ballooning when spiders travel that way😮

That happens here in SW Mt. every fall too, I see them wrapped in the fence lines, power lines etc. I look forward to seeing it, odd I know:) Thank you for showing that again!

When I was flying sailplanes in Ohio one fall day I witnessed thousands of these silk parachutes floating around the soybean fields. Never saw that before and haven’t seen it since. Thanks for posting.

Gossamer is something super fine and delicate - like a spider web , once I seen one floating down the road in front of my house that had to be 30 or more feet long in a breeze that you couldn't even feel .
@dustdevl1043Ай бұрын
It happens every fall here in N. Texas. Every tree, fence, and guy wire is covered in streaming gossamer threads.

I remember early one morning whilst walking my dogs seeing a whole field shimmering in sunlight with spider webs, there must have been millions of them criss crossing the field it looked spectacular.

I was preheating my grill one day and noticed a little green spider craw up to the top of the grill, point its but up, out come a silk chute and poof he was off to the wild blue yonder. Wonder if it found a good home.
