Great job Steve. I find it interesting how pilots today and even in Irag , Korea and Vietnam vs speaking with WW2 pilots . It maybe be the the amount of of casualties and death was so great in the ranks during WW2. At reunions I met lots of WW2 pilots thru my dad. They are very exclusive between themselves, spoke some about combat but a sadness prevailed . Since that war the face on experience of death was much less between pilots I Quess. My dad was fighter pilot over France , Belgium and Germany and shot down around 50th mission over Belgium . He parachuted as both wings tore away and difficult to get out with both legs shot up . Spent 6 weeks behind Belgium and French lines aided by underground to escape in North Spain . He was quiet about war and only spoke briefly about missions but did a radio broadcast when returning home during the war for a bond rally in Florida . He mentioned about the empty spots of dead or missing fighter pilots during briefings before flights and the new faces present . The men I met at family or veterans clubs when I was a teenager did not talk about war even if people wanted to hear . The pilots of later conflicts speak more freely about combat . I wonder why this is ?

I remember completing post flight paperwork at the combined 7FS & 8FS ops desk when the first fighter gal student walked up to the desk in tow with 3 other women: an AF Public Affairs officer, a civ reporter, and don’t remember the fourth. The PA Officer asked LtCol “Mork” Wessler (7FS/CC, behind the ops desk checking the day’s status) if he would take a moment to introduce Flynn to her IFF IP’s. Everyone in vicinity stopped talking and observed with the “WTF” expression. So much for no differences. To Mork’s credit, he replied, “Captain, I wouldn’t do that for him, him, or him (pointing to other students WVR), I will not do it now. Lt, welcome to IFF, see you next week when your class starts.” Equal treatment. Marco and I flew our front seat 2-ship AT-38B low level during IPUG at HMN. Comm out and shacked the TOT. We discovered Vark TAC form was slightly different and we’re supposed to be able to identify cows when flying at 500’ AGL, not be able to count their udders…whoops. We were very comfortable in the 200’ AGL environment after flying Varks.

Introduced to your future instructors? That sounds quite inappropriate. Thanks for your memories!

Steve - GREAT interview. Your podcast is the BEST air combat podcast hands down - IN DEPTH, RELEVANT questions, insight, memorable stories, courage addressing politically sensitive topics (eg role of gender in the military) and allowing the interviewee to share their knowledge and experience without falling into the trap of interruption, leading questions, or irrelevant superficial agendas which many other interviewers fall into. Please keep up the good work, Steve- this was such a treat because I LOVE the F-15C and BFM. I look forward to having Marco back and hearing more about his experiences. Thanks very much again! I will always be a supporter of this podcast!

@-theflea-45613 жыл бұрын
@@10percenttrue It would be great to watch all at once, but I think between 40min and an hour for me would be ideal.

just to echo this, my commutes to work are roughly 30 mins. but to be honest, i dont mind resuming them at that point, so dont worry about episode length. Perhaps having short editing breaks ever 30-60 mins would give us a good place to pause and pick it back up?
