It's about 11pm, homeward on the weekly long run. Food and water, fuel, mail and parcels. A couple of remote communities sharing an airstrip. Good lunch today. Local grown and caught. Nice people. Your turn to rest. Snoozy in the gentle rock and bounce of the aircraft's warm bosom. Some heater air blows across your shins. So nice set against the fussing wind and rain a few inches away outside the windscreen. Bitter cold hurls sheets of freezing rain at the cockpit. Wipers flapping diligently. Fuel good. Pilot wide awake, humming softly now and then. Couple hours of quality time, suspended in the sky. Somewhere and now somewhere else. Just a distant passing hum to the world below. Flashing lights out of the inky black. Discreetly anonymous and deliberately ostentatious both at once. Tracing like a fingertip over black misted glass toward the horizon. Second hand paperback still balanced on your lap. Right where a narrow blade of amber light flickers from a vibrating crack in the instrument panel. A yellow shimmer just bright enough to read by grazes most of the torn and curled cover. Warm and cuddled between two wings. Drowsy and content and right beneath Heaven... sleepy... melting again...
