Ever want to just fly away from all your troubles to a tropical paradise? Well, you can with little more than a Cessna 172! Many people don't want to attempt the journey with fewer than two engines, but honestly, I would take on the warm waters of the Bahamas any day rather than the 100ft pine trees and dense woods of Massachusetts.
Hey, did you guys know that the FAA actually certifies flight instructors to tell you everything that I try to convey in these videos? You should definitely talk to one of them instead of trusting some video you found on the internet, because who am I to tell you how to fly? I'm just a pilot sharing my experiences with the world, and these videos are not meant to be instructional or advisory in any respect.

I did this same trip with a buddy of mine about 20 years ago. I had about 125 hours under my belt when we did the flight. I rented a 172 out of West Palm Beach and we went direct to Freeport. Took about 40 minutes if I remember correctly. We had to rent a life raft as it was required to be on the plane. Stayed 2 days at the Princess Hotel and Casino. Mainly in the casino part. As mentioned in the vid, they stated a lot of pilots are scared to take a single engine plane over open water like that. I don't know if that was just his opinion but if anyone is a little nervous about flying that particular route, you'll be glad to know that there's several cruise ships, fishing boats and pleasure craft between coast of Florida and Freeport. We'd see a boat about every 3 or 4 miles so it was comforting for me, as the pilot, to know I could always ditch near one of those vessels. I'd recommend it for pilot, it was beautiful fun and easy to do.

Thanks for sharing that video! One thing I was taught here in South Florida: "When flying over water if your not wearing it, your not taking it with you" A vest with your supplies might be a good idea if you choose next time. Keep 'em comin!

So, my wife has expressed an interest in getting her PPL, and I'm thinking of buying a single engine plane so that she can build her hours. I'm a 777 type-rated ATP flying for the local airline, and haven't flown GA in over 35 years. Pre-Ipad days. Suddenly, the prospect of flying single engine to the Bahamas sounds really intriguing and fun, so i figure if we're buying an airplane, why not get checked out and get back into it. I found your video and decided....yeah, definitely. On the agenda for 2020. I'm located in Jupiter, but used to live just down the street from the Lantana airport, so your video has a real "local" feel to it. Although i fly for a living, I'm pedestrian level again when it comes to GA. This video was an inspiration!

I can answer your Skyhawk/C172 question! Every airplane put in the system talking to ATC requires the aircraft type to be put in, most controllers aren't aviation enthusiast like us and can't tell you the difference between a C172, C182, C177 ETC. They just know they are a high wing single that's slow lol. So the typical controller won't know what to put in unless you give them the specifics.

That was an interesting observation. The Approach and Centers in Florida sound so polite. I can't remember the last time I flew around California where they didn't sound distressed or angry about something, almost like dealing with DMV personnel, lol.

Remember that well, one of the worst decisions ever made. Local Skydivers here showed up with pilots at local meetings in support - more than showed for the public hearing on the TCA here when that was a new proposal (we were at the edge of the top layer). We knew who our friends were, even if it was only the Jump Pilots talking to them each lift. As a grass strip PPL student I wasn't in the habit myself beyond minimum controlled airport practice.

I used to fly simulated flights with the Cessna and I would try my best to land (touch the runway in actuality) when the stall sound plays or as close as possible. As of now, I can say that I have around 500 hours of flying in Cessna 172 in Flight Simulator X. I am talking about the default aircraft that it comes with by the way.

What's really too bad is that flight simulators sound the stall horn AT the stall, not five knots before, like real planes. Really gives the wrong impression to simulator pilots :-/

I always heard it as a good landing is anyone you can walk away from, a great landing is one where the passenger says 'Are we on the ground yet.'' It seems to me that once you're more than a mile off shore, the engine switches to 'Auto Rough', even though the instruments tell you everything is fine. I could fly 400 miles or more over land, and never even think about the engine, but over five miles off shore, or after sundown, that engine just seems to be ready to sputter to a stop at any second. I'll never figure out how I made it back every time! It's not there any more, but I used to fly out of Waterford, CT., about 4.9 miles west of Groton, CT., and we'd go out to Block Island all the time, and on those trips, you never thought about the engine, you just were so used to it running, and you knew it would, plus you were familiar with everything along the way. So, a trip across the 60-70 miles to the Bahamas isn't an issue for the airplane, but the pilot, well, that's another story, I guess. :D

Love that little field. My family has a place down the road from there. Many an evening sitting under the wings of airplanes on the flight line watching takeoffs and landings. nice video. I might suggest looking into wearing aUSCG-approved Type III Manual Vest for extended over water flights. If you have to do a water landing, they would be nice to have on already. You can find them on Pilot Mall or other aviation stores. I used to fly over the Long Island Sound some and used them.

Excellent video, I might go for an over-water flight from LEAX to GEML (Melilla) across the Mediterranean Sea. I often see in these kind of videos how the flaps are extended at 50 feet over the threshold or retracted during the flare. Why would anyone change the configuration of the aircraft on such a critical phase of the flight? Select flaps 10 on downwind, flaps 20 on base and full flaps on final (if required), but don't extended the flaps when you're already over the runway! It will require sudden control inputs too close to the ground.

Definitely go for it! It's a great adventure. In this case, we kept things fast for the waiting turboprop. I don't mean to sound conceded, but honestly, I see no problem adding flaps at anytime as long as you're good at flying :P

There's a drive through the desert that I've taken a few times in Utah where signs say "no services 100 miles" along the Interstate. It's unnerving getting to that 50 mile point where I realize I'm surrounded by nothingness and the chills begin to creep up, lol. I wonder if this would be the same level of spookiness for me. I think I'd be less spooked over water on the trip you did, especially having a plan along with good communications/ emergency equipment available. Thanks for another great video!

I've been considering a trip like this for a while. Now that I have a new job, I should be able to do it soon. I definitely won't go at 3,500 though. I'm coming from the west coast of FL, so I'll be on IFR and climb up to 7,000 or 9,000 before I go feet wet.

Had no solo'd in three years - did some touch and goes with an instructor - he said I was good to go - first solo in three years Ft. Lauderdale to Stella Maris enroute to Barbados. Good luck getting the jackets on if the engine quits from 3,500 and you're trouble shooting - the raft should have been on the rear seat. Other than that nice video.

FSF: great video and thanks for taking us along! One question: was there a reason to not climb to 5500 or 7500? Granted, you're going swimming regardless had you lost the engine at the half way point, but a higher altitude would have bought you some more glide range. Just curious.

Only the clouds made it a little difficult. Other than that, I agree, a good idea, but if it's really catastrophic, you're going swimming anyway.

+Friendly Skies Film True but extra time to physically get life jackets worn and gather all your survival gear in advance of hitting the water is always a good thing. The last thing you really want to be doing is messing around trying to pull gear out of a likely sinking aircraft so the more time you have to do all that before hitting the water the better.

Agree. Would better to go higher. I flew our C172R from Jakarta to Port Hedland direct some 20 plus years ago. At 10,000 feet you have plenty of time to plan a ditching if you have an engine failure.

On a Brave Scale of 0 to 10 this is about a 3. I'll take 66 miles of balmy water with sharks to the Bahamas any day over 33 miles of crossing Lake Michigan's narrowest point, where you'll get hypothermia within an hour, even during August.

As a young kid, I spent some time in Northern Ontario, where Beaver and Otter float planes could regularly be seen making bush runs. This video makes me wonder how difficult it would be to manage a float landing on such a flight. Could be really hard to find a bay that is protected enough to keep down the chop.

Yeah, I've seen seaplanes with ratings for how high the waves can be, and it's usually like 3-5 feet, so it certainly doesn't have to be glassy.
