Flying to Mexico in the Baron

Nice trip and thanks for the info, I'm planning a trip from the west coast to Mexico next spring. Have an A36, go Beech! Just wanted to point out that the turning on the heat does not burn any more gas. In take air is heated by the exhaust from the engine, but that heat was produced anyway, it does not use any more gas or take any power from the plane. Similarly unless you have a crank in your manifold you are not pumping engine gas/exhaust into the plane but outside air only.

Hi! Thank you for your feedback! You will love Mexico. Beautiful water and great food. Where do you keep your A36? We now have a V35B. On the singles the heater doesn’t use fuel but on the twins the heater uses if I remember about 2 gph. It’s a little different system.

Are there any fees associated with Mexico ATC handling? Did you need an overfly permit for Cuba? And if so, how did you attain one?

Hi Kevin! I believe things have changed but Cuba back then if the owner is onboard the aircraft there were no overflight fees. I think it also had to do if you were flying over the mainland. Mexico does have ATC fees. I remember getting the bill after but it was so cheap that it’s pretty insignificant. There are a few handlers you can use but I think they are overpriced for something very easy to do yourself. I did all the processing in Mexico alone. If you are going to Mexico I recommend calling your insurance broker and getting the insurance before you arrived. Otherwise you will get taxed.

I got a quote from a handler and everythibg tohgheter including the parking was ending up at 1500 dollars , ? Thanks for any advice

Hi Joe, When I fly GA I usually just fly with my iPad or cellphone. I like to carry as little as possible so having everything on FF is perfect. Plus pens inside the plane end up marking interiors ; )

Hi there! It’s been a while since I flown this route. I would suggest speaking with an advisor about it. I believe Cuba changed someone of their rules.
