8:10 hello, a few mistakes I wanna correct here. When you called in the frequency, you should address them by their callsign. In this case, Schiphol tower is wrong since tower doesn't control departures after a certain altitude. The correct callsign would be Schiphol Approach/Departure depending on the controller available. Obviously, this is if you fly on VATSIM. Another mistake is when you reported the passing altitude, you said FL020, which is wrong and you should say 2000 feet. Since in Schiphol the Transition level is FL040, any altitude below it, should be said in feet insead of FL. Below is an explanation of Transition altitude and transition level: Airplanes measure altitude using a barometer, since by climbing in the atmosphere, pressure decreases. Now to measure the altitude from pressure, the plane should know the sea level condition of the airport they are in. The problem is, if every airplane is set to a specific airport, when they climb out and enter an airspace where planes have other pressure setting, their altitudes would be different and ATC would have a hard time separating them. This is why, every airport has a Transition altitude that depends on airfield elevation, terrain... and below this altitude, the pilot should set the altimeter to the local QNH and after passing the altitude i.e entering the transition layer, the pilot should switch to standard pressure 1013hPa or 29.92 inHg. And also, transition altitude is the highest altitude available around the airport, and transition level is the lowest Fl available. So when reporting your passing altitude, below the transition Level, you should say your alt in feet. Above it, you say in FL. One other thing, you may notice that transition altitude is lower than transition level. This is normal, as it's what called the transition layer. This layer is usually 1000' and ATC is not allowed to clear you to an altitude there. As planes inside are switching from local to std or the other way around. I hope this explanation helped, and if you have any question or smth is unclear, let me know
