We are almost ready to leave the harbor with our historic trawler. But before we can finally untie the lines, we have to paint the navlight bases of our big sailing ship. Because right now they are illegal.
And there are some other small projects we have to take before we can finally leave.
Flying Coney is an 82ft long historic steel ship. And we bring her back to live as the beautiful sailing ship she once was. When we are done with the refit we want to sail the ocean together with you and teach traditional sailing skills.

It's always a gamble to put something humorous in the videos. Especially if it's self ironic or a little bit offending. There are people simply not getting the joke. So it does mean a lot for us that you enjoy the humor.

Daniel , the ship looks great and so much is getting done as far as your docking remember! Flying coney is 85’ and is a steel ship not like some of those fiberglass boats of 50 ‘ or less , you will do a great job of maneuvering, and being the captain of such a vessel. God,Bless,the both of you and your volunteer crew especially ! 👍🏻👍🏻

Thank you! Flying Coney currently has a LOA of 82ft with a 79ft hull. As a sailing ship including the bow sprit it will be 105ft. Yes indeed she behaves more like a ship then a boat but each time we get the chance to move the boat we learn a lot. It's getting better each and every time.

That would also be our goal. It would actually be very interesting who wood be faster. I think since we have the longer waterline and more sail area we have a higher top speed. But the slightest bit of beating towards the wind would give away our advantage.

Most of the boats I’ve worked on the engineers made a point of not bolting down the deck plates. The plates are well braced but loose. If you have to , have to get under them in an emergency,you don’t.t have time to be looking for tools. Those old school engineers went through plenty of rough seas and hard storms without much happening to the plates. The trick is to make edging so the plates can’t slide, but don’t bolt them down.
@normanboyes4983
@normanboyes4983 Ай бұрын
I take it your engineers were not in the environment where underwater explosions had to be allowed for. For more peaceful times deck plates can be secured with half turn Dzus fastenings.
@Pocketfarmer1
@Pocketfarmer1 Ай бұрын
@@normanboyes4983 you take it wrong. We spent plenty of time holding station on the edge of blast zones when the channel to Newark bay was deepened. Sounded like chain crashing against the hull. After the blast we would pass . Never heard of Dzus fastenings. Do they require tools? Do they need maintenance. Can they fail in a locked position? If a through or old rivet lets how much time do you want to spend fighting to get a deck plate out of the way?

The solar generator is a brilliant solution to your needs. With your 4 panels you could like charge two units of that size. One dedicated to the wheelhouse and one to move to the work. KUDOS to ALLPOWERS for reaching out to you.
@FlyingConey

The cofort that we have aboard only because of this little device is amazing. We are very glad and grateful that AllPowers reached out to us. Planing the final energy system is one of the most challenging things when it comes to a boat of this size. We will opt for about 1000 amp hours lithium, as much solar as we can fit on the wheelhouse and a generator. The inverter will be on all the time to give us home like comfort. We plan on using the generator for heating in the winter. On sailing ships I'm not a huge fan (pun intended) on wind turbines. I would prefer to add a shaft generator so that it's possible to get electricity when sailing.
@stevejohnstonbaugh9171
@stevejohnstonbaugh9171 Ай бұрын
@@FlyingConey I understand. Thank you for your reply and the overview of your plans. Are you certain you want to rely on a generator for winter heat? My preference would be a diesel boiler because of generator noise. Electrical resistance heating is horribly inefficient. Just my thought - clearly your call :)

We consider ourself as a floating and moving building site. A floating refit. We thought long and carefully about laying the boat up somewhere but it's actually cheaper and more reasonable to go out of the water only for short periods every other year. Spoiler, we've planned a shipyard time quite soon. But it's not just Yaba that had recently been launched and is now sailing. Also Tally Ho is now roaming the sea. I think the guy who restored her is a boatbuilder and a sailor called Leo.

Surveyor required me to replace those rigid plastic lifebuoys on the not unreasonable grounds that if you threw it and hit the MOB you could easily knock them unconscious. I believe they are approved in Europe but I think he is right. And that catamaran has totally inadequate clearance between the hulls, she will slam dangerously in a seaway.

Great job done on the engine room floorplates BUT I didn't see any safety equipment, always have a fire extinguisher or at least a bucket of water handy when grinding and welding, particularly in the engine room. Also we always used to design in small hinged flaps for access to valves hidden under the floorplate. Saves lifting the whole plate.

Sorry, but you have used the wrong bolts to secure your deck plates. The blots should be countersunk below the level of the deck plate. A surveyor is likely to pick you up on the hex heads being above the plate level especially in the centre of the plates. You might be able to use hex bolts in the corners, but it is not good practice. Also using tabs to join plate isn’t recommended as it makes it awkward when you come to lift and refit the plates. Bolts with heads above the plates are not only a trip hazard, but they stand a good chance of the heads being sheared off as tools and equipment are moved around the engine room. Best replace the bolts with 6 mm countersunk screws with Allen key head. When I was at sea we used to have an Allen key on a long handle and before we left port one of the junior engineers would go round the engine room to ensure all the plates lifted for maintenance were tightened down. BTW these plates are very important if something goes wrong and the vessel backs out someone will be heading into the engine room in the dark the last thing the want is to encounter is a plate that has been dislodged.

It's always great entertainment watching others moor their boat. However there is a serious side which is to learn by their mistakes. We only learn when we get it wrong and thus shouldn't be too critical of those perhaps less experienced.
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey Ай бұрын
It was more self ironic than everything else. But KZbin has given us a really hard time when we first moved our boat. You either can do something or you are an idiot. Nobody believes you're capable to learn something new. If you show the learning process you're incompetent and unfortunately many people are not able to re evaluate from time to time. That's why most channels hardly show any mistakes.

When putting back the life rings why haven't you treated the RUST on the wall its a sighly mess When doing all the drilling on the engine room floor you allowed all the metal filings to drop into the bilge which will rust as you have a metal hull so easy to use a magnet when drilling to collect all the filings your making extra work for your self in the future with lots of rust spots which quickly spread
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey Ай бұрын
We're not allowed to grind metal in the harbor and that's a huge problem. As for the bilge it simply doesn't make any difference. There's a collection of tools, electrodes, rust, dust and possibly the ruins of Atlantis down there. I'm always willing to learn new stuff and interested in advice how to do things better in the future. Most of the time there's a reason why we do the things the way we do them. It would be easier to acknowledge your advice when it's not written like an accusation.
