Impressive how you can just hop into any piston single and go Rich. I am flying a wet (September) ticket and transitioning from the Archer to our new (to us) DA40. Man, the Archer can't wait to land; the Diamond wants to keep gliding along.

We fly a 22T with TKS not FIKI and we’re in Michigan. Most days the ice layer would be too thick to want to fly in known icing anyway but having the TKS in a turbo aircraft is a must in the Midwest or east coast.
@mustardseedsociety10 ай бұрын
Well, I'm not in any way disputing what you're saying, but Matt Guthmiller flies his Bonanza all over the planet without TKS {I just watched a video he made 2 years ago and he encountered some icing but took advantage of temperature inversions -so no TKS system for Matt as of 2 years ago} - I guess the point is, if one really is a really good pilot, it appears one can navigate around the icing. I'm not saying it's wise nor am I saying it's not wise. There's lots of things Matt does I would never dream of doing in a single engine airplane.

Another great video Rich - really like all your videos. I have used the TKS many times as I have traversed the country and you just never know when you need it. I would say like you said that most of the time you don't need it but when you need it, you sure are glad that you got it. Taking delivery of a SR22T G7 in July. I will swing by your spot to check in and maybe go up in the plane.

Great video, as always, Rich! This is my home airport and that looks like my old hangar row, 1985 Aviation Dr. Hopefully, it's not as my old hangar row burned up a couple months ago. I hope that M350 survived. Most owners in the 1985 block were total loss...

Am I the only one who noticed the airspeed in the low to mid 70s on final? The red zone on the speed tape (stall speed) way too close for comfort. Cirrus final approach speed is typically 80-85kts.

No TKS----Location,Location,Location. TKS is a must in the cold climates.
@FlyingwithRich10 ай бұрын
I don’t disagree, but I think can be a very dangerous path to go down - getting comfortable flying in known ice in a propeller driven aircraft. I have personal experience with TKS/boots not capable of keeping up with ice accumulation in “light rime” conditions. It is not a solution to all known ice conditions.

Recently in a reply comment you talked about how it was a "myth" that the reason the Cirrus put in BRS was because the Cirrus was hard to recover from a spin. So, does that mean that Cirrus is easy to recover from a spin ?? {even if the cg is aft but still in limits} And if that's true, what is the basis for "whoever" starting the "myth" ?? I mean did Cirrus put BRS in because they wanted the customer to have that one more option ?? Or was it because the FAA told them they had to ?? {to certify it} And here's the thing - I just saw a video of a guy in a Cirrus who his engine sputtered and quit over Oregon and he pulled the "Red Handle" and floated down , and walked away unscratched. So we know they work.
@FlyingwithRich10 ай бұрын
The myth is that Cirrus put a parachute in their airplanes because they couldn’t recover the aircraft design from a spin. Cirrus designed the airplane from day 1 with a parachute as an additional safety feature. Something the Klapmeier brothers felt strongly about. Spins are prohibited in Cirrus aircraft, but if you get into one the recovery procedure is to exercise the BRS. I have no idea if the Cirrus is easy to recover from a spin. I also don’t know who started the myth. There are many success stories regarding Cirrus pilots who chose to use the BRS system and walk away from it.
@mustardseedsociety10 ай бұрын
@@FlyingwithRichI mean let's pretend you're in a Cirrus and you start to spin with lots of altitude below you. Would you at least try elevator down, ailerons neutral, power chopped, and opposite rudder to see if the aircraft recovers ?? At that point, what do you have to lose ?? If upon doing the technique nothing positive happens, then pull the red handle. Now if you're like past rotation #1 1/2, then pull the handle. And obviously if you're low and the aircraft starts to spin, just go for the handle as fast as possible.
@FlyingwithRich10 ай бұрын
@@mustardseedsociety Yes, if I got into an inadvertent spin in a Cirrus with altitude to spare, I would try normal spin recovery procedure before the Parachute.
@mustardseedsociety10 ай бұрын
@@FlyingwithRichHopefully neither of us will ever have to "go there". What do you think of "Fly Wire's" spin recovery technique in a multi ?? He says initially it's as fast as possible normal technique{like in a single - more of like spin prevention more than anything} But if it gets into a well developed spin {on a multi}, he's actually recommending going full aft elevator so the slipstream can slide under the elevator and touch that last little itty bitty section of the rudder so your opposite rudder input will have some effect. He said something about aileron input, but I need to go back and review what he said. The whole "blanking" science thing really messes with my head !! One part of my brain is saying "air is air" - if the flight control surface is moving through air which is everywhere on earth, how is it able to not deflect which is Newton's law of motion ?? The explanation is it depends on relative wind, which I get, but my dang brain can't get past the air is air thing.
@FlyingwithRich10 ай бұрын
@@mustardseedsociety Scott Perdue put some relative wind indicators on his Bonanza wing which I think helps to visualize what’s happening aerodynamically - It’s the same for the rudder and elevator. If you are in a balloon and there is zero relative wind because you are moving with the wind, are you at risk of your hat blowing off facing any direction? I think the most dangerous flying pilots do is primary ME training - both for student and more so for the MEI. Any ME airplane in a spin is a very bad situation, and for the most part, unrecoverable for the masses of pilot’s and instructors. Best practice is to have a healthy dose of that danger and ensure you never end up there.
