DJI shocked everyone this morning by not only releasing the new DJI Air 2S, but also the firmware update to make the Smart Controller compatible with it. This was a surprise because it took DJI 6 months to give the DJI Air 2 support, and today they release it along with the launch. Now, everyone awaits the firmware update for the DJI HD Goggles and Motion Controller. In this video, I show you the process of updating the Smart Controller and also take it out for a quick first flight.

Great video as usual 👍🏻 Full testing video of the Air 2s with SC would be appreciated 🙏🏻 not only by me but many others, I’ve been reading comments on DJI Air 2s FB page and watching videos many are saying there is a laggy issue even recently after latest firmware updates on SC when recording the screen and signal loss, I noticed yours had a slight lag only just noticeable. full test would help please! SC Lagging on and off screen recording and distance comparison with original controller! I’m ready to buy SC for my 2s but unconvinced it’s working to it’s full potential. I really enjoy your videos keep up the good work Cheers 🤙🏻

Adam, I was one that posted issues (with my MA2) about skippy/laggy feeds to the SC. After much clean-up and resets and new downloads my situation did improve. However, as you noted above, I am now left with "slight lag only just noticeable" feed to the SC. I think what you saw in Aldrin's video is about as good it gets for the SC. It's funny, but I think many users 'get used to it' and it seems normal/acceptable to them (myself included). I actually went back to some of my "old' video and confirmed the "just noticeable" lag, before the latest update. So, I think I'll keep using the SC.

With the smart controller being able to be used with almost all of DJI drones, a big issue I see is the battery life of the controller degrading over time. It would be cool if they could make a new smart controller with a removable battery so degrading battery life wouldn’t be an issue.

I am this close to buying the smart controller combo pack, but while doing my homework and research I noticed that the controller is only Occusync 2. So If the Air 2s has Occusync 3 - which takes precedence? Is the drone limited to the lower range of O2 or is there negleable difference?

A Bind N Fly version is a great idea since the controller from the Mavic Air 2 also works with the Air 2S. What does the AF icon beside the record button do? There is no mention of what it does in the manual other than let you switch between MF and AF in Zoom mode.

Thank you Aldryn. One question: I use the smart controller for my Mavic 2 pro. I have already ordered the Mavic Air 2S and have already downloaded the update to the controller. When switching back-and-forth from your Mavic 2(using the Go4 app) to the Mavic Air 2 or 2S(using the Fly app) do you have to keep re-linking the drones or do they remain linked with the controller regardless of switching between the different drones and apps. I’ve heard when the Fly app first came to the controller you had to constantly re-link your drone when switching from the Go4 app to the Fly app. I’m hoping to be able to just seamlessly switch back and forth without having to constantly re-link. I spent HOURS trying to "pair" my Smart Comp to this drone. Insane. It beeps as if it is paired but no... Half a day burned. At least I can see the Air 2S image in the menu of the Controller. Maddening.

Just went to the DJI website (4-24-21, 3:14 P.M. MST) and they are still NOT including the Air 2S in the compatibility list of drones for the SC. Right hand to left hand type of thing I suppose. I like many had assumed that Occusync 3 would not be backward compatible with the Smart controller. As my iPhone is useless in bright sunlight, and my Crystal sky monitors are useless for the Air 2S, I was torn between getting a SC or the Tripltek tablet to use with my new Air 2S. I was leaning toward the SC due to its HDMI out port to use on my DJI goggles Ver 1., but was disappointed to see it not listed as usable for the Air 2S on the website . Thanks for opening that possibility again.

Glad to here you asked DJI if they can just sell the DJI mavic air 2S (shell body) only. I had reached out to them yesterday morning with the same question. When I asked them about trading in my Mavic air 2(Shell body) for the new 2S they had said I would have to send all the accessories including batteries and remote. I let them know that the DJI smart remote is not an option to trade in there website as well because I only have the smart controller which I let them know again I would like to keep and not have to trade in but they never got back to me. So if you have the mavic air 2 and you would like the new mavic air 2S your looking at spending another $1,300.

Before the Air 2S was released, there were lots of rumours about it being compatible with Goggles V2.0, using the standard controller. Software can be updated but how about the Hardwares? Smart controller has old tech (screen,antenna.etc.) is it still better then the new Standard remote (used with lastest smartphone tech) that come with the Air2S?

I too, have the Smart controller with the A2s, but the last update (04-2022) changed several features, like the telephoto zoom. What I found that the Smart Controller no longer has the left button / wheel combo to do a zoom. Is there another way you have seen with the latest firmware update to do a zoom? I sent the controller back to DJI and they say nothing is wrong. Nothing in the latest manual, so what is gong on?
