As I have restless legs, I tend to stand at the rear of the plane a lot and get to talking to the crew. You'd be surprised how open they are about their work. So when I asked about their sleeping quarters (I knew the door led to them, but I honestly thought is was below deck...) they showed me the 'upstairs' (as noone was resting at the time). Just check out the last few rows of seats in the middle....some of the overhead lockers don't actually have handles, as they are fake :)

I can answer that one. You often have bird handlers with birds of prey around the airports or runways. However, that is not ideal for some airports, and you will have bird scarers, which are like a shot gun sound. You can never 100% stop a bird strike, however, it is very rare at an actual take off and landing. It is more common away from the airport, either coming in to land or after taking off. My source of information, myself. Ex Her Majesty's Royal Air Force operational flying base.

I often fly from Dallas-Ft. Worth to Sydney and this is what I think I remember one of the Qantas flight attendants telling me of their schedule during the 16-17 hour flight: There are usually twice the number of staff on board then there would be on a much shorter flight. All flight attendants are on deck during the first two hours (takeoff phase) and the last two hours (landing phase) of flight. It is interesting to see so many of the flight crew during those times! In between those two phases the first shift will be on deck for the first 6-6.5 hours while the second shift is resting/sleeping, then they switch shifts at the halfway point of the trip.

I used to clean these, I'd literally run to them on the JAL, Ana & Nippon planes because of how clean they were. Actually the Japanese planes were always so nice to clean. The beds I cleaned were much smaller than these. I recall the room being right at the back, near where we'd have that rising truck with food. With a very narrow steep stairway, the room was more square than what was shown at the end. There was a very low ceiling, maybe 4 maybe 5ft high and 8 beds in a similar arrangement but with much less headroom as they were double /bunk beds. To clean you head to be on all fours.

I discovered on of these on accident. I was flying and was gonna go to the bathroom but i wasnt familiar with that plane so i opened the wrong door, and for some reason it wasnt locked. When i opened it i saw a staircase and i was extremely surprised because it was a small airplane with only one floor, so out of curiousity i climbed a few steps to get a look and saw three beds close to eachother and some lights. Was certainly interesting. And i didnt get caught haha

On some 767s and all narrowbody planes, longer flights generally will require several revenue seats be used as crew rest. In the case of United's Island Hopper route from Hawaii to Guam, the point A to B duration is 16 hours. Seats 1A & 1B in business/first class are reserved for a second set of pilots and seats 2A & 2B are blocked off to allow the pilots to have a lie-flat recline. Due to the remote locations served, the Island Hopper also has a Boeing 737 mechanic onboard seated in a extra legroom economy seat. As for the smaller wide body planes, several economy class seats are allocated as a FA crew rest & include a privacy curtain, and extra legroom / recline.

Why don't long haul airlines offer bunks to passengers instead of seats? Not the reclining first class kind, I mean stacked bunks that have the same kind of density as seats in coach. I would much rather lie down for my flight than sit, assuming I have a tablet with stuff to watch/read when not sleeping.

Safety is a definite issue besides space and weight considerations.
@p111116 жыл бұрын
@@sierraromeomike Yea that's what I was thinking. They want us all to be awake and alert during takeoff and landing, with eyes adjusted to outside lighting conditions. But I'm sure the airline that Joe and I are starting can engineer a solution to that ;) Maybe adjust interior lighting to match the outside and have live camera feeds play on all the monitors + a good PA system? The authorities can be convinced. Same thing with space and weight. It should be possible to engineer a comfortable bunk with a footprint similar to a seat in coach. Just look at all the extra space above your head that's unused.
@sergiuc76846 жыл бұрын
@@p11111 and you must also be able to evacuate the plane in 90 sec . Even with proper lighting would be problematic in that configuration
@p111116 жыл бұрын
Sergiu Calancea I still think we can overcome that. With proper communication (monitors, PA) and perhaps having the bunk covers be open for takeoff/landing, I think we can get the plane empty in 90 secs or less. Maybe even have inflatable cushions on the floor so people can jump straight out of their bunk. I totally agree that it's an engineering and logistics challenge, but not impossible!
