If u have ableton and you're long for another sampler; you're either in that thing where u it's easier to get new gear than confront the fact that maybe you don't understand the stuff you have, or you don't have your tool mastered yer. One more bonus thing I like. I like to think I have my own hi hat lane, in the modulation section I'll go to or three, set the lfo pattern to random, click in option 1 "offset sample start", set it to a low number, no higher than 15, then assign mod 3 to change the rhythm and duration of mod 2's rhythm: in this way it ls as close to random as you can get. The result is hi hats that have normal variation in attck - just like real hh. Go a step further and grab am m4l modulatipb/lfo/shaper, and assign it to the attack, decay, susation.

Modularing the amplitude of a signsl is actually AM synthesis. FM synthesis is frequency modulation. You dont actually even need to use a sanpler or simpler to do either AM or FM synthesis. You can automate the frequency/pitch in the waveform editor on a track either in the clip launching view or the arrangement view. You can just write transposition automation to modulate the frequency.

I'm not a stranger to FM mod on the sampler, but yeah such a great demo, especially the little touch where you show the difference between having the shaper on or off

Coming in on the ground floor with FM synthesis in the 80s I have always appreciated its potential. I misunderstood what the objective was here and although I enjoyed some of the sounds derived from the "Piano" sample I was imagining that someone had figured out a way to reverse engineer a sample into constituent operator settings😅

So I always layer my kicks and snares. No more of less than 2 or 3 per perc. I don't line the waveforms up of do any of that, I just group samplers. And after adjusting the adsr and filter, the next step is always fm modulation. For instance, the sub element of your kick may not be tuned correctly: simply turn on your fm, set the sustain to max, and I like the tri or sign wave forms. Set the course to .01 or point 1 (? I forget₩ then manually adjust the fine until the pitch is correct. Obviously set the adsr of the osc envelope. Something it's nice to ramp it in - set the attached a few milis off - to retain some click. For the transient, click layer, the best is the saw or 64 maybe? They impart a very round, plenty filtered click to the beginning. After that, a few instances of eq8, frequency shifter (the other secret perc synthesis tool)and of course a glue comp and sat. And usually another frecuemcy shifter to be able to shift the whole thing (it's often on the individual components as wel) Last thing, I've been theorizing how you could synth an 809 stile clap: basic sin wave with the quick octave pitch drop. The noise FM will envelope fully on, then the filter set in a loop- with a max for live decreasing both the initial volume and increasing the attack length for each subsequent iteration. Haven't tried it yet but man, been using sampler hard core for years and I routinely realize soetjing thing new and useful. Don't sleep on the Aux envelope in the modulation page; you want the filter distortion to start at full DB and in 110 miliseconds fade to zero percent distortion. Want to introduce vibrato to a looped wave? Make a standard adsr with sustain fully turned down and an decay nice and short,

EDIT, I always use fixed position or my drum fm osc/synthesis. I haven't explored fixed mode yet ND determined what it's best for; as perks don't change pitch for all ontents&purps. You also aught to get a hang on looping the adsr of the osc and especially the pitch shift for some crazy non perc sound design. Live Is soooo ppwerful.

When I open up the Sine Saw Square Sine in the sampler, and I play it, it sounds completely different than yours in this tutorial. Do you just have it already set up differently? It makes it frustrating to follow along if I can't get the same sounds.

Not sure if you can do it in live instruments, as suite is too pricey for me (or rather I blow all my cash on other music stuff 😂), but if you want to explore further, try using the sample as the modulator rather than the carrier. Or samples as both 😊 subtlety is definitely required, and perhaps very specific choice of samples would give the best results, but it's kind of a quick route rather than to having to modulate an oscillating signal quote a lot to get into weird ground.
