Some of the best advice on tactic training I have heard from this podcast. Concentrating on chess puzzles that take 5-10 to solve instead of too easy or too hard, is great for progressing in your thought process.

For anyone interested, Nikolas Theodorou did achieve his third norm in the Charlotte tournament mentioned and is now a GM.

The NY Times article did present evidence that Abhimanyu Mishra's norm tournaments in Hungary were suspect. I agree his performance would require a greater score there than in Charlotte, but they interviewed one GM he played that admitted he wasn't particularly motivated to play his best against Mishra. Also Mishra had draws in games of 13 and 6 moves. That is rather suspect. He no doubt would eventuality earn the GM title, but it seems there was some underhanded behind the scenes moves to help him earn it in record time.

When I study master games, I am always fearing that I am not getting everything that I need to get out of that game. I almost always find a position where I get some nugget of knowledge, so I guess that some learning is happening even if it is not optimal.

I like the idea of the Super GM title and titles based on ratings rather than norms. But no matter what system is used, dishonest people will find ways to game the system.
