I did guess correctly, I’m glad because I just ordered one and from all the demos I’ve heard I’m going to be happy I did. Sample A sounded really good, B not so much, and C really good with more natural transients. Thanks for the video, hadn’t heard it on a full mix yet.

Got these right. My favorite was "B" the G-Comp because it just glued everything really well. The only thing I didn't like about it was that it seemed thinner than "A". FMR "A" was as a close second because it sounded more clear, thicker, and controlled levels, however it didn't glue as well as "B". The least favorite was "C" setting on the 1773 because it was the least controlled. Thank you for this test.

I understand the super nice mode is supposed to be more transparent, but I think the reason it sounds less controlled is that it's no longer compressing up to 4db like the others. I think the threshold needed to be adjusted when going into that mode no? I don't see the gain reduction meter moving

i'm currently making a video for another compressor that i love slightly more, stay tuned for that. Studio one compensates for any latency with their pipeline plugin so i personally didn't have any latency issues

I feel like generally the mix is less compressed on the instrument/bus level than what I’m used to hearing and certain frequencies in the drums are less cut out / emphasized than what I’m used to hearing which probably makes the mixbus compressor react differently to how it would with a more polished sounding mix. I would be interested how the comparison would be with a cleaner mix going into it.

Hello, how is the RNC connected from the output of the interface? Does your interface have balanced outs? Are you going directly from the interface balanced outputs to the RNC unbalanced inputs? Thanks

I was wrong... 1. SSL, 2. RNC 3. Don't know, but thought it should be the RNC. So I was positive surprised that the SSL was the second one and glad to hear the third one with the "really nice" knob... sensational result - now I'm looking for the best price...🤗 And hey... subscribed...🙃

I love the RNC… and would happily pay 10 times the price for one, if it had stepped controls, stereo unlink, balanced i/o, a decent power supply, all in a 1u chassis. I think the RNC sounds better on the 2-buss than my Xpressor… it’s not actually too dissimilar to the Dangerous, in terms of sonics.

I'd honestly like you to A/B a unit that has stepped knobs and one that doesn't... no way on planet earth you're hearing those subtle changes. (I get it... it's like a warm fuzzy blanket knowing EXACTLY how many db you're moving up or down... but seriously... this is where engineers lose me and it starts to become nonsense voodoo that no audience member in a million years will hear.)

Pretty similar without the "really nice" feature engaged on the RNC. With the magic feature engaged it sounds more open and natural. That said, I think the RNLA would do a better job as a bus compressor.

Cool..... I've got a new interface coming (Motu M4) with better DAC and 2 extra line level inputs that bypass the pre-section. I also have an RNC laying around that I bought years ago for tracking purposes. So it's time to start playing with the RNC as an outboard unit. It doesn't impart a tone of color or anything, but there's something way more 3d and natural in it's dynamic control than the plugin.... I'll have to put it up against the better plugins I have. I'm considering a cheaper opto hardware unit as well. Thanks for the video :)

@SoundcastStudios4 жыл бұрын
Yeah sadly the Really Nice feature on the compressor introduces volume which is hard to compensate for in real time. Luckily you can download the wavs, level match on your own and really hear what it's doing
@TheCoreys Жыл бұрын
I guessed the Really Nice (lol) feature because it was louder and not that obvious but I failed to guess the first, hearing the cymbals more metallic I thought it was the plug-in since it didn't have to go through the DA/AD again so sound would be more pure. Though probably youtube degrades enough to hide that, because every time I transform to digital and then back to analog I loose something, even on our more expensive audio devices...Nice video and interesting idea.

@CC-fi3pp3 жыл бұрын
A quality hardware compressor is always better because it actually compresses the signal before it goes into the input of your audio interface, the software compressor compresses it after, regardless of how the DAW tries to make it look ‐ that signal is already past the audio interface, forget the DAW showing you it's going through the vst comp 1st, thats a visual lie, your audio interface actually took a non compressed signal which is akin to recording non compressed signal which is bad and can not be properly corrected ever unfortunately.
