@user-yb3rs5wh6z2 жыл бұрын
I’d have to disagree with Larry’s statement about the rifle being “long stroke”. The implications of long stroke, to me, is that the piston/ op rod is attached to the bolt carrier and travels with the carrier. Example most recognizable being the AK or Garand. In the FALs case the piston only pushes against the carrier. I’d argue that it is a short stroke, just as the actions of many other guns, namely the FN49, AR18.
@thorsenst2 жыл бұрын
I think it's more an issue of the op-rod doesn't travel the full distance of the bolt's travel. I also disagree that it's a long travel piston. I think because it travels less than half the bolts total travel it's a short stroke system. I don't think that it necessarily has to be fixed to the bolt carrier though. Also I don't know of any long stroke systems where the piston/op rod isn't attached to the bolt carrier by some method.
@CenturionStrategic2 жыл бұрын
You're correct, Larry's wrong. It's a short stroke gas piston.
@zx7-rr486 Жыл бұрын
Yes, it is indeed a short stroke op/rod piston. You can see clearly in the slow motion vids that the rod only protrudes about an inch and catapults the bolt carrier all the way back with momentum.

Short Stroke Piston by definition means the bolt carrier group is bit connected to the piston, like the FAL, G36, AR-18, SKS. (M1 carbine and SCAR technically are tappet drives, though principle is similar) Although I agree, a well tuned reliable short stroke system will travel with the BCG for the longest amount of time. The term “Short Stroke” I would argue is poor to describe the mechanism. Better I would say is “connected piston” like for an AK “transferred piston” for an G36, “Integral piston” for the AR-15. Tappet Drive and Direct Impingment I still agree are relevant.

It struggles against a modern AR-308 type rifle, mainly because of poorer ergonomics leading to slower manipulations and a lack of ability to easily optical devices. Oh, and weight. But 7.62 NATO is still 7.62 NATO and it's still an effective cartridge. But the fact is that any iron-sighted rifle is obsolescent in this day and age. With some slight upgrades (say like Spuhr did for the G3) and an appropriate optic, then they can again be pretty effective weapons.
