Yeah, but how much more? Remember, the military is a numbers game. The Military wants to see a a 30-40% improvement in the rifle. Because that makes every soldier probably 20% more capable individually, but as a division? A Division's effectiveness in combat may only see a 5% benefit in combat efficacy. For the whole of the military? It's not really a significant improvement. But....we aren't seeing 30-40% improvements over the AR platform. We are seeing what? Maybe 5-10% improvement in effective range, while likely not saving any weight over the current system. The NGWS 6.8mm cartridge is going to be probably about the same weight as 5.56 currently is, if not a little heavier (Case weight is lighter, bullet and powder get heavier). So, you have a rifle, firing a more powerful cartridge? Likely going to lead to slightly slower shot recovery times. So how much more capable is such a weapon system going to make a soldier, in all of their tasks? Of which, combat is only a part of? At the end of the day, because of the sheer numbers involved, these benefits start becoming insignificant.

I definitely think it makes a lot of sense in its original role, less as a weapon to kill enemies with and more as something to suppress them while you run away toward friendly forces. I recall The Chieftain saying in an interview that tankers' weapons are really for that exact purpose, getting you from your damaged tank back to safety so that you can eventually get another tank and rejoin the fight, and in that role the P90 seems perfect since it's compact enough to be kept inside the tank and go in and out of hatches easily and having 50 easily controllable rounds on tap is a big asset in that situation.

Shootouts have lots of shots fired, with few rounds hitting the targets. Having a lot of ammo to keep the other guy "ducking" until reinforcements arrive, is why Security carries the weapon. It is light, accurate, and can hold a lot of rounds.
@jeffbenton61833 жыл бұрын
Another reason is that the lighter round has a flatter trajectory for longer (greater *effective* range) but also looses energy quicker than the tradition 9mm submachine gun/pistol round (lower *maximum* range). This means that stray bullets are less of a problem because the bullets become less dangerous quicker. Since the rounds are going almost twice as fast, and tumble (like rifle rounds) each one might actually have comparable or better stopping power than more reputable 9mm, 10mm and .45 caliber rounds. These are all traits that security and SWAT would find advantageous.
@mefobills2793 жыл бұрын

@@mefobills279 No problem. BTW, take one thing I said with a grain of salt, though: I asserted that the 5.7x28 *might* have more "stopping power" (a somewhat nebulous term) than a .45 ACP, even though Ian said the terminal ballistics were poor. I just did a little more research, and supposedly, it doesn't actually penetrate as far in ballistic geletin as desired (although I was under the imoression that it was tested and found at least adequate back when it was new - in short my sources contradict each other).
@quentagonthornton492 жыл бұрын
@@jeffbenton6183 Not necessarily effective range, but range with insignificant drop. It would mainly depend on how experienced the shooter is at using the weapon and longer ranges and learning the trajectory. A heaver bullet at a lower velocity will have greater stopping power than a lighter bullet at a higher velocity with the same energy. If you google "Taylor KO calculator" and fill in the values for cartridges (or even loadings of the same cartridge) with similar energy levels, but a significantly different bullet weight, you can see this effect. I'm not sure why the projectile would tumble as the barrel in the P90 has a fast twist rate of 1:9.1 which is enough to stabilize projectiles that weigh up to 70 grains which is a lot more than the normal ~30 grain bullet for 5.7x28mm. Why do you say that rifle rounds tumble? This is usually not the case unless you use a bullet that is too heavy for the given rifling twist rate of the barrel.

@Seeker-wq8jc3 жыл бұрын
It's definitely a radical, if strange gun that was a product of changing times and unique requirements. It was a gun ahead of its time that was meant for a future war tomorrow that never came. As weird as the gun is, you got to admit, the P90 is still an excellent package for what it was designed to do, and to think it was ALMOST adopted until Germany vetoed it over the MP7 not being adopted, resulting in neither one becoming standard. My favorite source of information video-wise has to be the one Ahoy did, if you haven't seen it. I'd definitely recommend it. In general, the primary innovation of the P90, as well as the Five-seveN, and the competing MP7, is not the weapons themselves (as cool as they are in themselves), but the cartridges they fire. The whole concept was to have this dinky, itty-bity ass round that can be fired from either a PDW or pistol that was meant to accommodate said PDW, and while very low power in terms of ballistic effectiveness, was designed to be rifle-like in form, meaning they travel at a crazy high velocity compared to similar sized standard sub caliber cartridges, and defeat body armor where other cartridges of the same size would do jack shit against armor. It was excellent on paper back in the late 80s when the fear of Russians wearing body armor was still a thing, before the fall of the wall, though today doesn't really hold up. BUT, these weapons may once again have their spotlight decades from now when we're not fighting insurgents and such. Who knows. But we got some pretty cool weapons out of the whole concept.

@@Seeker-wq8jc You think weapons like this might be relevant in a conflict between two modern national forces? I think the compactness is a major reason special ops and security units are interested in this. During my platoon leader training it became very obvious really soon that in vehicles on convoy patrol or when going into buildings or doing stuff like crawl through canalization pipes to get to a covert access, compactness of your gear does actually matter a lot. I doubt they use it because of the ammo count or cartridge. It works, its easy to use, and it's insanely compact. It think those were the main criteria for those guys.

Law enforcement and spec ops tend to operate a lot in enclosed areas where bringing a longer weapon to bear would take too long, or would be impossible due to the room available. Additionally, the P90 has a relatively 'intuitive' aim, especially at short range which is not unlike pointing a finger. This helps get bullets on target faster. Also, in spec ops operations at close quarters, they are not necessarily aiming to take someone out immediately, esp at the cost off ammunition and giving away position, but even if it doesn't penetrate far, a hit will distract a target long enough to incapacitate by other means. Worn with a shoulder strap makes it relatively easy to let swing and reacquire if need be, opening up multiple engagement options.
@maxpulido42683 жыл бұрын
This weapon isn't common in law enforcement. Also, the people who actually use weapons tend to use them in ways that ignore dogma, such as the belief that a long barrel adds anything but bulk. The people who don't really use the weapons, but instead carry them and talk about them, tend to be the ones defending obsolete features like 20 inch barrels.
@MutheiM_Marz3 жыл бұрын
problem is.....it's piercing things. Law enforcer want somethings that stop. like .45 or 9,10mm. 5.7 if miss can penetrate wall or people and hit innocent people. that why MP7 P90 not so much popular among ordinary police. also ammo is expensive. most set up or patrol police is OC spray, taser, glock 19 or 17 (weirdly glock 34) Patrol Rifle M16 or shotgun mostly Rem870. in some state police have MP5, it's 9mm. you have plenty of those (Utah Police mag dumps MP5 to stop car chase)

They don't penetrate much. The rounds penetrate body armor but they are not likely to overpenetrate, they tumble on impact. Also, because of the low projectile weight, they lose power very rapidly beyond their effective range of 200m. If you miss with this weapon (which is already very easy to aim and has a very flat trajectory), you likely won't do any collateral damage.

I think he did, albeit using the bluetip rounds, which are 2-300 fps slower out of respective firearm (than 198LF or 190SS black tips), and another 2-300 fps slower than out of a P90. One of the greatest sins with 5.7 reviewers is the lack of looking at ammo; blue tips are essentially .22 Magnums, while green-tips are quite faster, with a harder core. I haven't seen black tips, as of yet in a review; likely due to their legality; but they're the round that Ian talks about that would just zip through. The others cause some pretty crazy tumble effects.

If you hunt around the internet, you can find a picture of a guy who was shot in the belly with a 197, the resulting wound and surgical repair will turn your stomach a bit. I have a PS90 SBR and a first gen FiveseveN. The PS90 is my house gun, super handy with that silly barrel cut to the proper length, but the FiveseveN is a range toy for me. I see the advantage of both sharing ammo, but the round really does the best from 10"+ of barrel.

I was brainstorming a locked-breech bullpup with AR parts... Basically flip the reciever 180 with a hole where the charging handle is and a re-positioned ejector, make the recoil spring concentric to the barrel, and at the gas block have a semi-concentric short-stroke piston unlock the bolt carrier via a connecting rod holding the recoil spring and bolt (carrier) together. It would end up wider than a standard AR, but all that width would be behind the trigger/pistol grip. Make a compact magazine well/trigger assembly out of polymer to lock into the standard pins now on top of the gun and a long connecting rod to the new trigger like we see here. Only ergonomic difference would be a normal AR mag sticking out the top, but that would basically be part of the buttstock assembly as it is inches from the rear of the reciever, thus tucked neatly into the shoulder. Polymer shell over most of it and BAM, no compromise, partially off-the-shelf parts, rifle-caliber bullpup. Configurable in any cartridge the AR platform can take.

My view on the whole use by special forces and paramilitary is that they are effectively support troops. Special forces doing covert ops don't want to get into a firefight. Look at the commando raids into the French coast in WW2, many came ashore only with pistols. A rifle would not have helped them any better. As for paramilitary and police. Those protecting buildings and landmarks have to carry these weapons all day. Yes, in the moment a larger rifle would likely be better, but the actual chance of an attack is so very low. Even here in London, its years between attacks and the London Bridge attack was with machetes. Not downplaying the seriousness of the attack though, it was bad. To prevent attacks at certain targets often requires the optics of presence. Having a weapon which is easier to carry for longer periods of time means that officers are likely to spend more time in visible areas. Just my thoughts.
@benjaminb5053 жыл бұрын
Exactly this. So many people get their impression of Special Forces from Predator or Rambo. Special Operations units are not designed to assault defended positions that a role better suited for infantry & armour units. Even high value target raids make up a small fraction of their time. Most special operations missions are meeting local forces, keeping their efforts coordinated, and gathering intel. For these missions, a handy carbine or PDW is much preferred over a full-sized battle rifle or light machine gun.

Now you are correct in that they aren't meant for some aspects of combat, hence special forces. Forces designed and trained for a singular purpose, the scalpel of the military. As for recon and intelligence units the US military alone has a lot of those excluding socom units. As for weapons, truth be told SF units can use whatever they feel is needed for the mission.

By the very nature of special operations work, all of these forces must be able to perform a variety of roles outside of their primary mission, and for So then, yeah, Delta Force & SEAL teams may do more HVT raids & direct action counterinsurgency, but they're generally not going into heavy fights as a primary role.

I always thought the semiauto carbine version of this might make a decent patrol rifle. It is quite compact, since our patrol cars had become so crowded. A bit more velocity, although it is a glorified 22 WMR with better aerodynamics. However, the bullets have a reputation for tumbling. In LE we would not use AP ammo, just regular ball, hp, or the V-max. And of course the 50 round mags are useful. I hear a few SWAT teams have adopted the P90. The compactness is certainly an advantage for entry teams and confined spaces. Not my cup of tea, but being southpaw i do appreciate the ejection system- it deals with the inherent flaw of bullpups. Nice to see one in action.
@jeffbenton61833 жыл бұрын
One advantage for SWAT is that - though they maintain a flatter trajectory for longer than slower, heavier rounds - they loose energy quicker, meaning that the range at which they are no longer dangerous is significantly closer to the weapon's effective range. This reduces the problem of stray bullets. They're also - as you say - more compact than ARs and that makes them much better suited to most situations requiring SWAT, whereas many military situations would call for an assault rifle.

Plenty of mass shooters have got higher tolls with 9mm parabellum. I wouldn't call one singular incident (and not an unheard-of/super unusual case of its kind, at that) proof that it's necessarily better than more ordinary, cheaper, widely available rounds as far as terminal effect goes.
@BeingFireRetardant3 жыл бұрын
One of the responding officers got shot in the forearm, not only did it break her arm, it nearly removed it. 40grains is not a lot of mass, but it's moving at Mach 2. Things tend to shatter. Comparatively, a 115grain 9mm moving at 1400fps behaves completely different. So yes, even though it was a pistol, that 5.7x28mm rounds were going fast enough to create wound trauma all out of proportion to its relative size. This might sound dumb, but it's kinda like the difference between an old. 45-70 Gov't. versus a .308 round. Both are lethal to Buffalo, but for completely different reasons. I am a fan of the 5.7s accuracy,lack of recoil, velocity, and with some very expensive exotic loads, excellent terminal ballistics. But you have to use it in its envelope. It's no battle rifle. It has limitations. But as a CQB weapon, it is unparalleled.

I'm curious, when the you have the weapon shouldered, is it easy to glance down and see about how many rounds are left in the magazine?
@shawnhicks6193 жыл бұрын
No not really, but in semi auto it feels like it takes forever to empty a magazine. Full auto it will dump 50 rounds surprisingly fast

@@shawnhicks619 I think you know more than me, so I'll ask: why not? The magazine is transparent and the cartridges are brass (i.e. brightly colored)
@shawnhicks6193 жыл бұрын
@@jeffbenton6183 you’d think it’s easy to glance down and just see, but the actual “clear” portion of the magazine is in the center and since your head is fairly high up on the sights your kinda looking down into a frosted clear plastic at a weird angle. Add to that your looking at an object that’s quite close so it takes a long several seconds for your eyes to adjust, and then to readjust once looking back out the sights. I know it sure seems like it wouldnt be a big deal but it is. And quite frankly you may be able to tell your maybe running low but to get an accurate round count in a firing position isn’t going to happen. Also the above described in a combat situation could cause some unpleasant things to occur and cost valuable time. Honesty we just look once we lower the weapon from ready which is much easier and causes no eye strain. While the factory ring sights are very accurate head and eye position is critical as well as focus. They also rely on ambient light to work so it’s not great in low light though there is a light you can mount for this. On my civilian ps-90 I removed the factory sight and put a decent red dot. The ease and speed of target acquisition improved markedly. I carried the p-90 and it’s a very functional platform, it’s small and compact and suited well for CQB, you can easily carry 300 rounds, is very accurate and flat shooting, and restricted rounds pack a lot more punch then civilian offerings and do have dedicated AP rounds though it’s likely that in the 15 years or so since I carried one armor is significantly more difficult to penetrate. Overall I like the platform, even the civilian version is quite small and compact. There are a couple of variations that allow for lights and lasers with pressure switches and it’s light weight even fully loaded. It doesn’t kick a lot and is quite quiet compared to many other rifles. And while bullet grain is pretty light you’ve got 50 rounds to send down range. And it’s got a lot more knockdown then a .22 LR but not as much as a .223/556. I can see the value for truck drivers as well as CQB like clearing buildings ect and for small forces that need to be light and carry lots of rounds. For the civilian world it’s an expensive playtoy, the rifle itself is over 2k and the rounds are pretty expensive. Plus reloading this round is dangerous (as in it’s possible to have a dangerous load if 1 grain of powder to much) and requires special handling of the cases for prep so as to not damage the lacquer coating. I’ve reloaded these and they are a pain because the cases are so small. Plus your constantly paranoid you’ve loaded too much powder and your facing a potential explosion in your face. Hopefully this answers a lot of the questions of this platform.

You can look down and see if you're good, empty, or close to empty. You're not going to be able to tell how many rounds you have under stress.

I had the opportunity to shoot a select fire P90 a couple of months ago. Besides the weird progressive trigger, it was a great experience: light, compact, ergonomic, accurate and soft shooting. Having just shot the FN2000 beforehand (stapler like trigger and malfunctions galore), it made me appreciate a lot more the P90.

I have the semiautomatic version of the P90 and it's arguably one of my favorite weapons to take to the range. When I do bring it, I usually pair it with my FN FS2000. I then manage to gather an audience, fascinated at the "funny looking guns".

I find it works best for rushing site A attackers. Flash then rush and you'll normally kill 2-3 attackers if they are there, but you will die. Its good for giving a numerical advantage to your team by taking the initiative from the attackers. Plus they call you p90 noob, but that should be interpreted as a compliment, drink the tears of your enemies.

@@sannidhyabalkote9536 I tend to have more faith in my team mates than they have for themselves. I usually top the score, but not always, but the whole time i'm saying "we got this", "good shot, bro", "bad luck man, you'll defo get him next time" and passing on information whilst im dead, co-ordinating the team. COMMUNICATION and POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT IS KEY! I find most of the ladder team play is filled with toxic good players, but because they all act like alphas their ego gets in the way of doing good for the team. They all think they are the best thing since sliced bread, but in reality, they are Rambos, one man armies. If you can direct them, give them adequate information, they are unstoppable as long as you keep keep thier egos to a minimum and push them to destroy their target. Minimize or eliminate all negetivity within the team and co-ordinate them, and they will go great. DO NOT CRITICIZE, REINFORCE THE GOOD THINGS THEY DID! @@Shepard_AU LOL,LOLOL,LOL..... Once you figure out these flashes your gameplay will improve 100x fold, you have been relying mostly on your reactions, but the more you play without them, you're observing gameplay. so once you master the flash rush, you should be able to read other gameplay through observing other players on your team after you die. The whole point of flash rush is to hold until you know you have more than 2 players pushing your point though audible queues. like steps. Push anyway though after you flashed, you will kill more than 2. Less than 2 players pushing the point you are holding, you grenade and smoke spam, and only push out when you think they unexpect it.

And it’s the high velocity of 5.7x28mm that makes it so lethal. You can look up ballistic gel tests and pork shoulders that have been shot by this round to see the kind of damage it does. It’s terminal ballistics are like that of 5.56x45mm, the small round enters but then it tumbles and bounces around creating a nasty wound channel.
