I like the idea of Sonic being the old wiser player that got his soul trapped inside Sonic.exe's game and Tails is the new player that hasn't yet been taken, not truly aware of that this is more than a game but Sonic's warnings become more real after he comes face to face with the demon himself.

Fitting thing is that in the original Ordinary Too Slow Cover mod, the Sonic we see there was a victim of Sonic.exe, so it's possible that he's the same guy in this mod.

we need a mod like this but it's litterally just normal sonic. Like the Mario Funk Mix one, but sonic. (You could technically use the mario Mix's health concept too. Fire flower would be shield [which COULD change into fire shield, bubble shield, magnet shield, depending on the level] the mushrooms would bassically be rings, and u would die if u lose your rings and take a miss. U'll understand better if you seen the actual mod)
