A lot of people think all Navy Seals are Tier 1 elite forces like we see in movies, but 9 times out 10, movies are portraying DEVGRU (Seal Team 6), not vanilla Seals. The vanilla Navy Seals, Army Special Forces (Green Berets), and Army Rangers are definitely much better trained and do tougher missions than normal Army Joes, but they aren’t at the same level as the Tier 1 JSOC Special Mission units. There are only five Tier 1 units in the U.S. military: Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU) known as Seal Team 6, 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment Delta (SFOD-D) known as Delta Force, Ranger Regimental Reconnaissance Company, Army Intelligence Support Activity (ISA), and Air Force’s 24th Special Tactics Squadron.

As far as regular U.S. Army Special Forces doing a hostage rescue or hostile extraction of civilians. The only one I can think of is Medal of Honor recipient Staff Sgt Drew Dix. He was assigned to Military Assistance Command Vietnam (MAC-V) to advise and train local Forces. When the 1968 Tet Offensive happened, Staff Sgt Drew Dix lead a combined force of local mercenaries and U.S. Navy SEALS to liberate the town of Chau Phu. Staff Sgt Drew Dix and his small force fought the NVA/VC for 56 hours, and rescued 14 civilians.

My buddy was on a CRF Unit for 5 years until they disbanded bc they were considered redundant with JSOC’s mission set. For those of you who don’t know, CRF companies are an elite cadre of Green Berets who specialize in Direct Action (DA), Counterterrorism (CT), and Hostage Rescue (HR) missions. Each Special Forces Group (1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 10th) has a CRF company, and they are considered to be the strategic reserves of each combatant command in case of an emergency around the world.

I guess they didn’t have nods lol Something that was also not mentioned that I did like from that scene was the silence aspect. SF CRF teams did that too. Actually they were doing joint DA missions with regular seal teams. But the top HVTs are for JSOC to handle.

Y'all's description of this flick putting all the good stuff ever into 1 mission reminded me of the movie Memphis Belle, which took everything that ever went wrong on any B-17 bomber mission and made them all happen together in this 1 bomber crew's last sortie. In reality, the crew's last mission was a cake walk that went totally by the book.

I love you guys! I love how you give an honest assessment of Hollywood military portrayals. You guys are great at explaining that in reality, these guys wouldn't be performing these over-the-top badass moves, yet explain how it would be done in real scenarios, which makes you more badass than a movie can portray.

Some context some people often overlook, this film was released at the peak of the Call of Duty, Battlefield, MLG phase in gaming. I believe this film and Zero Dark Thirty had promo dlc for Battlefield and Medal of Honor. I remember loving this film when it came out, so much that i thought it would be an Oscar winner. I think this film felt like a recruitment ad aimed for gamers, similar to Battle: Los Angeles.

The point about the weapon being tethered to you is important. Back in college, we had a shooting/tactics club (military college) where we did all sorts of things from shooting, to room clearing/cqb and operation planning, and one of the modules we did was weapon retention in close quarters. One person would walk down a hallway with a rubber ducky training M4, and others would hide in rooms and try and spring out and get the weapon from you. The first thing I did was reverse the sling so I could have the weapon in front of me, and not once was the other person able to turn the gun on me. The instructors actually told me to stop doing it because it defeated the purpose of the drill.

Question: At 16:20 we see a sniper team on site. They're in ghillie suits. Ghillie suits are often made prior to mission and using the native foliage, but the team jumped in. So have you ever done, or known a guy that jumped with a ghillie suit, or did they make the suit while on mission?

I think the movie was great for entertaining and good for optics and action. I'm not watching the movie looking for Oscar worthy acting. I give the SEALS (Team 4) a double thumbs up for taking the assignment. I also applaud them for not showing us exactly how they would do everything or what they'd actually use as in equipment. Its a movie. If I want the actual, I'd watch a documentary of some kind. Thanks for giving us a movie that was good enough to critique. Much respect to the Special Operations community of all Tiers and what they all do. Respect All Fear None 💯

As a former action guy I appreciate the comedy related to the films and calling out the BS that just isn’t right. Have you done a BnB of Black Hawk Down? End of Watch? Maybe Street Kings? Just throwing some movies out there as there are a ton to select from. Keep hammering these out and I’ll keep tuning in.

Speaking of sniper angles, even people who play videogames know about that. It's like the first thing you learn about sniping in any medium: yes, you can post up and go prone in a lot of games, but most people won't simply because once you do post up, suddenly your angles are so limited you want to stand up to move like 2 feet to the left. And then once you do move 2 feet to the left, you want to move back 2 feet to the right again because that position can see down an alleyway that you current position can't see, but your current position can see into a set of windows that your previous position can't see. Really good snipers will use extremely limited and unexpected view angles to surprise the enemy, but that usually comes after tens or hundreds of hours on a very small map area. And even then, when you do find a spot and post up, you can get a maximum of 3-5 shots off before everyone and their grandmother's Corgi knows exactly where you're at, and then you become basically useless because the enemy all hides or kills your ass because you're camping like a dumb fuck and nobody likes a camper. There are 2 kinds of videogames: the kind that give you a shield so snipers are useless, and the kind that give you artillery so snipers are dead.

Guys, as someone who has never served in the military, I absolutely respect you and your service. That said, I think you're being a little too harsh in your review. The movie was not a documentary, it was just entertainment. That's why they use a disclaimer like "based on a true story," or "inspired by true events." They may not be the best actors, but in real life they did pass BUDS and SQT, and did real missions like you did to become Green Berets. just looked at it as 90 minutes of entertainment. How many movies show someone getting shot by a shotgun, and flying back about ten feet when hit. Great videos, but sometimes these movies are just made to keep you entertained for a couple of hours. Again, thank you for your service.

I’ll admit, I’ve always thought this movie was a good representation of the SOF community. I liked that for the ops stuff, it was good to have Teams guys doing the action. The acting? Yep. Bad. In the back of my head, I knew some of it was Hollywoodized with certain things. I missed some of the things you spotted like not having a ruck, NODs, or suppressors. The thing about catching dude before he hit the water, I was just glad the slow hands weren’t the lead-in to him jumping out of the water to pull dude in and drown him like I saw in so many SF ‘80’s movies. There was a little butthurtedness from having you guys do a little trashing, but I got over it quick when you guys passed on some knowledge. I gotta agree on the SWC guys coming in and being instant boner! That was badassery there! I want to see the video of the drunken movie! Drunk shenanigans of military guys is always hilarious!

I was a raven operator in my scout platoon. They have a full ground station which requires an open environment for the antenna to send and receive signal, and you guys are right. It sounds like a mini lawn mower in the sky. If the conditions are right you can hold a diamond default formation at a decent altitude and not present a big silhouette. The gimble camera is great (if it works lol) and it does provide good picture and you can take snap shots of the AO and capture grid coordinates to relay to the command team. It’s great for mortars.

I was Airforce pararescue and i don't know why you're giving these SEALS such a hard time about the halo jump in the beginning they really do do that and have done that it's nothing to them. I get what you're saying normally that wouldn't be a jump performed in a live combat situation which in the movie it was training anyways if you follow the film. and all that being said it's a movie and you are to hard on their acting and tactics. they filmed it with active Navy SEALS. it's not a fucking tutorial. it has to be pleasing to an audience so everything that's done in combat and how itd actually be done isn't able to be filmed accurately. because its theatrics. you expect alot from a movie and the operators in this movie. probably shouldn't watch and critique SEAL movies like these because you somehow think green berets are superior. in real life in real world these guys are the best in the world so idk man you just kinda disparaging this movie as harsh as you were is just kinda shitty

@@petertaylor8252 that could be possible. I've just watched alot of their breakdowns and I like them, they're entertaining. I just think they don't take into account it's a movie and while it is portraying a realistic situation tactical and real life combat situations arent something easily simulated in a Hollywood movie setting. This movie though if you watch the extra behind the scenes stuff it was filmed as well and as realistically as possible with real deal SEALS and other operators and military members. So something's were theatrical but they shit on this movie and for no other reason to hate on the SEALS is how I view it.
