Testing and opening a WD-01 wall scanner (wall detector) from Fnirsi. It can find live AC wires, metal objects and wooden beams (studs) inside walls. It has a depth indication and it can even locate the center and edges for wooden beams and tell magnetic metals from non-magnetic.

Fascinating, thank you. The scanner is certainly a step up from the magazine designs I built in the 70's!!!

That's a great little tester. Way better than the ones ya can get with a measuring tape and leveling lazer, & sprit level built in to them. For just finding things behind walls it's bloody great. 👍🇮🇪💚🙏🏼 P.S. the wooden beam detector is BRILLIANT. TO KNOW WHERE TO HAMMER A NAIL WITH NO ELECTRIC WIRES, PIPES, JUST THE WOODEN BEAM DETECTOR ON IT OWN IS WORTH BUYING THIS FOR. I LOVE HOW IT CENTERS WHAT YOUR TRYING TO DETECT. "DANNY, BRILLIANT AS ALWAYS MY FRIEND. IV LEARNED MORE FROM YOUR CHANNEL THAN ANY OTHERS OUT THERE. I KNOW IV SAID THIS MANY TIMES BEFORE. BUT YOUR AT THE VERY TOP OF MY ALL TIME BEST ELECTRONICS CHANNELS" 👍🇮🇪💣💥

You make me wanna buy one of those, although here in Brazil most of water pipes are made from PVC and walls are mostly concrete, almost no pipes are metallic, so I guess it won't work searching for buried pipes behind kitchen/laundry/bathroom concrete walls, to avoid drilling into them, otherwise I would buy one immediately. Also, if the AC detector is that offcenter as you stated, it may confuse some people when using it since everything else is centered around the hole for pencil marking.

The ac signal is not meant as perfect locating of ac wire. It is meant to warn you there is high voltage around where you are working and to be careful.

@@mrkhainuui yeah most of the no touch meters alert from like 6v to 600v. If you need specific voltages you always need to measure directly using a multimeter.

Just an insane guess, but maybe there's a slight chance it could locate a (water-filled) PVC pipe when switched to the WOOD detection mode. Perhaps someone who owns a similar detector could test to confirm whether that is the case - and what types of surrounding material still allow the pipe to be detected.
@WagTsX

@@robinvince616 yeah, I thought the same, maybe if the pipe is water filled, it can detect.

Wood detection in North America is important as wood is a cheap and plentiful (and renewable) resource. These devices are generally called "stud finders" to find the wood beams (commercial properties often use steel studs so there's a need to detect both wood and metal studs). You use them to find and mark the edges (the hole in the center) so if you need to mount something heavy you can drill into the stud to get the strength (e.g., you want to hang a TV). Lighter items like pictures you use a wall anchors, so you want to use a stud finder to make sure you're making a hole in the drywall (the anchor serves to hold the screw so it doesn't fall out).

Does it support USB C to C charging? This should really be checked on all USB C port devices, as sometimes manufacturers are using dodgy techniques instead of following the specification, and that is one of the features that fails

Very nice and clever review! Thanks a lot, DGW! I think i am going to buy such a device, as mine is more than 20 years and not as exact as this one! Mine is esp. much worse in detecting wood - this has improved a lot i guess! Also the distance shown on the display help a lot finding the right spot to drill 🙂

Excellent demonstration and analysis. The price of this detector with its functions is better on both counts than the brand name units. Actually, I might purchase one as it is better than the unit I currently use.

I saw a video by CuriousMarc where he was wanting to convert a square wave to a sine wave using a resonant LC circuit. One of his waveforms was exactly like the one in your video, slightly distorted when he used a ferrite core transformer as L, he said it was down to the ferrite causing the issue. He went on to say that expensive speaker driver cores are air wound and when he used an air wound L the wave was pure sine at resonance. I wondered if something similar was happening here. Either the PCB or the material the wire wound detector is using is causing the distorted wave as the the circuit is using square wave from the processor board?? Either way that detector is amazing! I thought it was going to be really rubbish but it looks like a really useful item :) Cheers for showing us it :) x

That's probably it, getting the same inductance on an air core is harder than getting it with a ferrite core so they had to use a ferrite core to save on space. The product still works as intended so I guess it was a good decision.

Hi DiodeGoneWild, I really enjoy your videos - thanks! The wooden beam function is much more commonly used in commercial premises in Europe, and and both commercial and domestic buildings in the USA where wooden frame construction is used with sheet-rock (plasterboard) over the wooden frame to make the interior walls. In such cases mounting anything that has any mass to it should be done by screwing into the "studs" (wooden frame elements), not the plasterboard. Stud finders often use capacitance - there will be a plate of some kind in the stud finder, and the permittivity of materials near that plate will affect the capacitance, which is measured by the device. Fun fact, the ◆ marks on many tape measures are standard stud spacings. They're a bit of a funny distance apart.

From the packaging, through the presentation to the accessories, this thing looks as if it was made in the same factory as my AutoWit Supercap 2 capacitive jump starter. The whole thing is just so well made, and of such good quality. I can see one of these being very useful in the near future - I think I'll keep an eye out for one!

The geiger counter was a gimmick but this thing is realistically useful and seems to work well.
@vaclavtrpisovsky
@vaclavtrpisovsky 2 жыл бұрын
At home, the Geiger counter is not really useful, and too complicated for its own good... Realistically, you only need a counter for the number of current spikes per time interval, which you can convert to any other unit easily. Or add another non-resetting counter for the cumulative dose. And use an alpha-sensitive tube, which is more useful but expensive. But if the unit is certified, it could be useful in some mines or nuclear physics facilities.
@mrnmrn1
@mrnmrn1 Жыл бұрын
Let's hope the Geiger counter remains a gimmick, and won't turn into an essential tool for survival in the not too far future. Although I don't think it's EMP proof, so it should be stored in a thick copper or aluminium box for shielding, and hope for no more nearby strikes after you removed it from the box.

Hope you get the 2 in 1 DSO & TRANSISTOR TESTER by F-NIRSi iv one and the transistor tester is not up to scratch. Maybe it's just my one. But it just showed a darlington as 1 BJT with a flyback Diode inside. And resistance & capacitor readings where way off. I have a food transistor tester with a see through perplex box. (Yee know the one with PWM,[from 1/100] SMD TESTER ON IT TOO, SQUARE WAVE OUTPUT,[from 1000 Hz to 100,000Hz I think] PLUS DUTY CYCLE TESTER AND 1V TO 16V OUTPUT OR TEST NOT SURE WHICH. BUT IT HAS THAT GM CHIP DRIVING IT ALL. ITS A CHEAP BUT VERY GOOD TESTER. BUT IM VERY HAPPY WITH THE SCOPE ON IT. NO PROBLEMS THERE.

They're obviously confident in their product too, sending it to someone like DGW who will literally tear it apart. The true final test is if it "lasts".
