Update 2021: This lecture was created when FTTx or FTTH was a new concept and PONs - passive optical networks - were a novelty. Today FTTH PONs are serving hundreds of millions of subscribers worldwide. They are being installed by traditional telecom companies, electrical utilities, cities/counties/states/countries and private enterprises like real estate developers and private fiber optic network companies. Although this video is old, it's still quite relevant. FOA has expanded on this video with a series of Lectures - #63, 64, 65 and 66 - with more in-depth information on FTTH architectures, PON standards and specifications, FTTH network design and FTTH installation and test. We recommend you view all those after you have seen this one.
This is the 25th lecture in the FOA series on fiber optics. This lecture is about FTTH - fiber to the home, or more generally FTTx, the industry term to include fiber to the home, premises, business, curb, etc.
In this video, we discuss why FTTH is happening now, what architectures and network protocols are being used and how it is implemented.
