I don't know if you made a video about this, but one of the things that annoyed me the most during my modeling was the inablity to make crisp and clean holes ( for windows or other openings)... it didnt matter the amount of passes i made with the scalpel, for some reason it wouldn't cut the cardboard face on the other side and i would always cut through with an angle... after i pushed the piece out, i would get a mess of around the edges of the hole with messed up foam and hairs of cardboard, regardless of the size of the cut hole and if just changed the blade....i thought i could polish the edge with a piece of sandpaper, but it turned out to be a stupid idea that made things worse... English is not my native language but i do hope u understand what i am talking about. I also do value a lot your expertise on the subject and hope to get some guidance from you.

Brilliant. Have you considered doing this with a triangular grid? Would the additional cuts lend any additional flexibility, and is it worth it?

How small/large can you make the grid? Is it dependent on the thickness of the foam board? Also can you just cut lines into it if you only want it to flex in one plane?

you can make it whatever size you want depending upon the material that you're using you'll have to do a little experimenting for thicker material versus thinner material

hey i subscribed because your vids show me just what i want and need with respect to model building with one exception; how to cut round holes accurately , i.e. like windows with round tops or round windows. is there a method or tip or technique to doing so well.?? thanks in advance

Well, as I stated, a laser cutter would be the best for circles. I don't have one, so I have to cut them by hand. Print out a paper template and hold the blade at 90 degrees. I end up using the spindle sander to make the inside circles as round as possible, or the belt sander like in the video for outside circles. Circles are not an easy thing, but practice makes you better.

i know this is probably a stupid question but in making Buck parts a contour gauge is used, do you ever use one Eric? its the old way of taking a 3,d profile of someone or something. now days you could just scan the object but you gotta be made out of money to do that.

Sometimes a contour gauge use but it depends on what the goal of the project is and what you need to do so every case is different

​@@EricStrebel well it hit me to ask i got some projects on the back burners of my brain my american take on the old Italian speed boat you know the ones im planning to make it lower and wider and a shallower birth to be honest scale it down all together. 4 man no bigger. im not going to keep it though it will be for sale and i plan to record the process to command a higher price. there are some types that collect the finer things in life if i can show it was built with love and attention i can name my price to the right buyer a buck and plied strips of wood and shoulder joints and such acrylics it will be tough as nails and beautiful all at the same time is see you using a autoclave i had something like that in mind as well a heat gun would do but i want it to be perfect. i even mean to try my hand at engraving to emboss the metal trim i plan to use. a series of sea dragons i think . so if there's a buyer im calling the shots, reasonable of course .hence the question .

The square I got on ebay from Japan. The weight are custom machined tools left over form a glass blowing job.

That's not a compound surface. It's bent around one axis while a compound surface is bent around two or more axes resulting in a convex or concave surface.

Older video, iMovie and KZbin had audio issues, should be fine with good speakers, newer videos made with FCP don't have that issue. Crappy laptop or mobile devices don't help the issue.
