Focal Image Ideas - Recycle, Repurpose, Reuse

I am enjoying this months recycling prompt so much I have created 4 more small projects with items from my stash.
Many of us are great at creating backgrounds, but struggle with adding a focal image. I hope this will give you some ideas ❤️

Nina Ribena - why have I not found you until just now? I'm so impressed with how well prepared you are, your concise editing, and just the right amount of "chit-chat", not rambling on and on like some people do. In addition, listening to you is so soothing as my Mum was from England - born and raised in London. She met my Dad during the War while she was a WAC. I'm a new subscriber, but in watching a dozen or so of your videos I've seen a nice mix of real-time and voice-overs with music. I think it depends on how much "explanation" is needed or if it's a project that can be watched sped up with a bit of voice over and some music. Your editing is excellent (you don't make us watch you cut everything out or do the same repetitive inking the edges over and over) so I'm just thrilled so far with every video of yours I've watched. You seem to have found the perfect balance between the right amount of "chit-chat" and a bit of silence. I get bored listening to people drone on about the weather and the flu they've just gotten over and their child's first day of school. I appreciate that you stay focused on the project at hand. You are definitely a cut above the rest! :-)

These are just beautiful Nina , I love the swallows We have barn swallow in the summer , Where we live is close to Farm land, These bird dip & swoop in the early evening gobbling up our nasty Mosquitoes Which Love me . ATC are fabulous . I'm a real time girl! Love your videos! I'd watch them even if you didn't edit any parts out!! I just love these tags so much. I am very inspired with how you used the "too busy" backgrounds, added even more texture with the Inka Gold, and topped them with even more color and more texture with the focal image, yet the resulting pieces are incredibly cohesive and not "too busy" at all! Absolutely gorgeous! Thank you so much for sharing! As usual you really inspire me to step away from my comfort zone. I see that if I completely fail, I can cut it up and make something else with it! Love the progression of your background. I actually have a stack of “starts and stops” on index cards. They evolve from the extra bits of gesso, paint, and ink until they reach a point that I am inspired to add an image or additional artwork. Seems to work for me right now, when experimenting as well. Love the first Tag project. Always appreciate your use of ribbons and fibers with tags. Love the way Distress Oxides look! Enjoyed watching you work again today. What a great use of supplies. My favorites are the ATC's, but the tags are lovely also. Personally, whether you speed up or real time is situational. There are just some projects that you need to show in real time and then others can be sped up as you go along. I think you have used both very well in your videos. As you mentioned, you cannot please everyone. Do whichever that effectively conveys what you are wanting to share. That should be your prerogative. I rehydrated all 9 pots of my Inka Gold. Last night I boiled water (to kill bacteria that will cause mold), cooled it slightly and then added 1 tablespoon to each pot. I let it sit overnight and it was better this morning but still a bit dry so I added another tablespoon of boiled water and let it sit until this afternoon. I stirred it up with a craft stick and it's now nice and creamy - almost like new! I'm getting an order of glycerine tomorrow and will add a couple drops to each pot. I can't remember who recommended the glycerine but apparently it really helps keep the product creamy smooth.

You always find the best wallpaper patterns 😄.I think it was Barb Owen saying how to re hydrate your inka gold.I cant remember off top of my head how she did,but I know she puts folded up wet baby wipes into the pot before putting lid back on to help keep them moist.I prefer your videos like this one,but dont mind the other way to.The only videos I don't enjoy watching on youtube to much is if speeded up and music playing over the top!x

I think these samples were all from Homebase. I’m sure the swallow one had flowers on it too. I cut most of my samples up into smaller bits to save space as they were well and truly taking over 😂. Xx

I just rehydrated all my dried up Inka Gold (about 9 pots of it!). Last night I added 1 tablespoon boiled water (to kill bacteria/mold), slightly cooled and let it sit overnight. This morning I added 1 more tablespoon and by this afternoon I could stir it up with a craft stick and it was creamy smooth like new. I'm getting an order of glycerine tomorrow and will add a few drops. I'm so glad I was able to revitalize them otherwise - what a waste of money!

Beautiful examples of what can be made with scraps Nina. I agree that I believe it's the attention to detail that makes a difference. It's not a race to get art done. It should be an enjoyable process so diving into the details shouldn't be that hard. lol Personally I enjoy the regular speed videos with you chatting throughout. If I need to speed it up I can but normally I never do. What do you like to do? That should be a consideration also. If you really prefer one over the other then that should be what you produce.

Morning, Nina, I 'collect' wallpaper samples as well but I just don't take a little square. I take at least 12"length across the full width of the roll. I used to run the checkouts and security office of a large DIY store and we were a LOT happier if customers would take a decent length and not just tear a corner off. For one thing, it would be a lot better for them to see if they liked the design when they held it against their wall and on a more selfish note...it made it easier for our staff to keep the sample rolls looking neat. One girl pent a couple of hours every day ripping a straight edge on all the open rolls to make the manager happy lol. It also gives crafters a lot more material to play with lol. So next time you're in Homebase, B&Q or The Range, don't be afraid to take a decent sized sample right across the length of the roll :). The biggest DIY chain in Australia, I believe, is called Bennings...and they've bought out Homebase over here so I guess it won't be too long before another well-known name vanishes. Oh Bejay, I don’t just take a little square. This is just a piece I had cut off the much larger sample I took 😊. I used to use wallpaper in my pages all the time, and I have several samples in my closet that need cutting up and organising - I should do a show and tell. Bejay the shop is Bunnings and VERY big in Australia. I believe they have cornered the market here

That's the problem isn't it, they make sure the customers have nowhere else to go and then they make then pay through the nose. I'm sure once they completely take over our Homebase hain we'll find the same here...all the more reason to take decent sized wallpaper samples lol.

Nina, I love all your projects today. I have some inka gold paints myself, I find when they dry out just add some water to make them fluid again,but be sure to let the moisture dry up before putting the lid back on because it will become moldy if you don't. I am speaking from experience. Thanks for sharing today. I prefer the real time videos myself. I like to think of it as crafting with a friend long distance.

Thanks Laura. I am always worrying about my products going mouldy. I’ve been lucky so far, but I do wish these things wouldn’t dry out so quickly. Thanks for your feedback regarding video speed. Its difficult to know how much to edit sometimes without the video being too long ❤️ x

Beautiful tags!! Especially like the use of wallpaper. Will have to raid the hardware shops when I come over to UK in the summer. 😉 Think I might order a Crop-a-dile too...they look very useful. I like videos either way. 😊
