In a way it is a pity that Germany didn't switch production from the Bf109 to the FW 190. It was proved to be a more reliable, more rugged, and certainly a more pilot friendly aircraft than the 109. And to think, such a radical design for such a lovely aircraft came about because the only engine available for it at the time was a radial one. Outclassed just about anything the allies had available at the time of it's debut.

Great film piece! The Rolls-Royce Griffon sounds awesome, and the Russian radial engine used in the 190 replica sounds ok. But hell it is still an amazing piece of replication and a big thank you to all the people to enable this to happen.

I wonder... why can't they grab an 801, do a complete scan of it and replicate it? maybe with a few upgrades given modern tech... I mean, people built completely custom blocks and engines for cars, so why can't it be made for a bigger engine like the 801? current tech allows for printing entire intake headers out of metal! or just about any metal part that you wish for, as long as the printer allows for its size...

The issue I have with watching a video like this one is simple. The Spit was NEVER meant to be a low level fighter. It was developed initially as a high level interceptor, meant to face high level German bombers. Bringing it down to levels where it can be displayed to the public takes away most of what it is capable of. It is GOOD at low level, but it it GREAT at high level, and we just don't have the chance to see that in public displays

I heard there where two factors that made the Spitfire an exceptional fighter, They decided to add an extra machinegun however the wing was too small this led to the elliptical wing which greatly enhanced low speed lift and handling. I also heard a man say (not a WWII pilot) that the elliptical wing tended to buffet and chatter making a lot of noise in a sharp turn as the stress on the wings became critical meaning that even an inexperienced pilot could push his airplane to the limit where as other planes if pushed too far might tear a wing off. I've never heard an actual pilot mention this
@arrowbflight50824 жыл бұрын
mark johnson That is extraordinary. I have read a number of remarks by Spitfire pilots, and do not recall wing " buffet " or " chattering " ever being mentioned. One pilot popped the rivets in the wings, made it back and he noted " the kite never did fly straight after that ". Perhaps someone else may chime in. What were your thought's when the old fellow told you that ? Cheers.
@TheHelensp4 жыл бұрын
I haven't heard anything like that story about the guns. The RAF did a study in the 30's that concluded most pilots would need the number of rounds that 8x. 303 machine guns could deliver to have a good chance of bringing a bomber down, that's why both the Spitfire and Hurricane had 8 Browning machine guns; they were developed at the same time to meet the same specification. The elliptical wing came from the designers work on the Schneider Trophy racers, which led to the Spitfire. It did give pilots a buffeting just before the stall, so was important for new pilots and helped them to get the max turn from the plane; they all knew it would turn inside the Me109 every time
@TheHelensp4 жыл бұрын
@@arrowbflight5082 I've read one pilot got into trouble with something like 20 enemy fighters after him. He concentrated on keeping himself out of their fire, and did it long enough they all ran out of ammo or fuel and had to give up. He may have got a couple of them, but his Spitfire had to be retired after that, it was so bent out of shape! Another pilot dived on either a V1 or Me262 and went so fast his plane couldn't be used again

@@Warbirds That's fair enough but the Mk18 missed the war. You named this video "Focke Wulf Fw 190 vs. Supermarine Spitfire" which at least to me tends to indicate a direct comparison between planes that were used against each other. It's not the FW190's fault. No FW190 flew against this thing. There are Spits that did, but presumably there has not been any comparison flight between them and the FW190? Anyway, these planes were excellent examples of their versions, albeit displaced in history from each other. I was particularly interested in the FW190 - we hardly get to see them these days, I presume because they are very rare. Not so Spits, so much. Thanks for an excellent video.
@FiveCentsPlease Жыл бұрын
@@lloydrobins6074 There is only one wartime Fw-190 that is airworthy at Paul Allen's museum. That museum also has a Spitfire Mk. Vc in the collection. The Flugwerk replica Fw-190s differ quite a bit in construction than originals (no armor or hard points) and thus do not fly exactly the same, so no comparison has been made. Steve Hinton was a regular pilot for Paul Allen's Fw-190 and he commented that it flies just like the notes written about it.
