This practical session with Annette Capel explores the strengths and weaknesses of candidate performance using real answers from the Cambridge Learner Corpus. Participants work with the Cambridge English Assessment Scale and evaluate preparation strategies. Learner data from the English Grammar Profile illustrates useful grammatical development.

I have noticed quite often students struggle to come up with a third idea and thus I think it is worth spending time discussing possible strategies that might help. What I do is to encourage daily reading of authentic articles ( chosen by me) on topics frequently seen in Fce so that ss first come to appreciate how writers write. A good writer is a good reader and thus I think ss should be given the chance to read as much as possible. After that, I hand out spider webs for them to come up with at least 3 content points discussed in the article we are discussing in class.

A very interesting seminar but slightly difficult to follow without being able to see the material on the handout, in particular the sample essay.

Would be much helpful for students if we can refer to the sample answers,Specially samples which score a band 5.

Re; the four example sentences, I would rarely expect to see the complexity of the fourth sentence in any writing task at FCE level.
