GREAT teaching moments in this one. Wish it was longer. It’s the in-betweens that the artist works through all the problems which you summarized at the end that made this video so good. Yes, VALUE RELATIONSHIPS make all the difference. Thanks!!

One of your greatest strengths is the adjustments you make to what you see... boat smaller, moving elements for better composition. Bravo!

Well this one goes into my top three favorites. Another instance of the a beautiful painting from a plain photo. It’s “value does all the work but color gets the credit.” Unfortunately true as I struggle with value most.

Excellent painting and your comments are exactly right along with the way you approach a painting.i wish it was as easy as you seem to find it, I will be watching this a few times and hope some of it sinks in.

Thank you for this. I'm a begginer and practically self taught. Of course medium of choice is acrylic. I'm starting to delve into oils as I find them so beautiful and rich, I've been terrified to do so and revert to my trusty acrylic. I have that issue you mention, understanding value, so this was quite helpful to me. Thank you.

Sweet painting. Draftsmanship was impressive. And the boat pops. Great work Michael. Heading out myself shortly into smokey skies - again. I have a whole series now titled "Smokey Sky Series."

A transparent black gives the illusion of depth since it's not reflecting light. It's the absence of light that defines a dark.

What a beautiful painting, it's like the perfect composition and it's all complementary colors between the rusty and the blues...really well balanced. I really have to paint!! I keep procrastinating on this environment I live in lol...Im turning into a really lazy guy in terms of my creativity. Anyway, this is one of the painting I'd hang on my wall without a question. Love at first sight. Seriously.

This ( for me) is a combination of everything I like in a painting. A little more finished than you’ve been doing lately. I like the warmth to it, the lights and darks , the subject , composition. What else can I say? From Tallahassee, Florida

I love watching your painting process, values are a struggle for me! This video really shows the importance of getting the values right - at the end of the underpainting stage, you already have a painting that works!) The image reminds me of Edward Hopper, love it!

I was wondering your thought process on choosing your size canvas, you mentioned bigger & your reasons, but is there anything specific that makes you choose square versus any of the rectangle sizes?

Thanks for another great video. Values are not so easy for me to control, so watching you do it is always a big help. Do you shoot your reference photos with the same camera that you use to video yourself as you paint? Is camera quality an important consideration? Which camera do you use for shooting your location reference? How much photo correction do you need to do before you paint from it?
