Brings back some good memories. I was responsible for carrying out tyre maintenance on the DROPS fleet at Kineton many moons ago. Loved every minute despite the sheer hard work. Brute of a vehicle.

Amazing story how Foden got the massive contract for these beasts. Came down to their ability to manufacture most components in house. I know first hand Foden wanted to use a Cummins engine, the RR eagle that the M.O.D insisted on leaked oil badly. When Foden confronted them about this they said it was a feature of the engine. The M.O.D accepted that. Great truck

My thoughts exactly. Wonder what it would cost for road tax/ insurance etc, and what classification of licence to drive it? Can buy them for around 26 k £ now…..
@zefrog74822 жыл бұрын
@@supertramp6011 I wouldn't run it on the roads, just private land. If society collapsed and you needed bug out vehicle law won't really hold any weight.😉 It sure would be interesting to find out though, bloody expensive I'd imagine. Also I think due to the sheer monstrous size you have to get a special permit and specify route etc in advance to highways agency and other bits of red tape.
@deezelfairy Жыл бұрын
@@zefrog7482 No highway agency notification to move or drive - all the dimensions are within allowed standard limits for trucks so don't fall under any STGO requirements. GVW falls inside the standard too (32 tonnes for 4 axle rigid). They look bigger then they are because of the tall stance and huge tyres. These have nearly all been retired from the army now and have been available for sale 'demobbed' from MOD disposal companies for years. You could probably get a tidy(ish) one for £15-20K. To drive one on the road though you'd need a class 2 HGV (C license catergory) Tax not that bad if registered as a 'private' hgv and insurance often available fairly cheaply through military vehicle club memberships ect. Cool as they are I'd say something that does at best, 6mpg would be a pretty useless bug out vehicle. Blow a tyre out and it's all over - your not going to find another one anywhere.

MoD specifying 8x6 not 8x8 and only 1 in 3 hillclimbing plus max 70kph seems penny pinching. The spindly looking steering links seem vulnerable to hitting rocks. Sounds good though, with no nasty Cummins noises? (Gardner or Perkins RR here ?)
