Fogmen of the Fog Islands explained | Kenshi Lore

A rather short video about the fogmen we all know and hate. This was requested many times so here it is, enjoy :)

It’s probably safe to assume they don’t need the fogland’s environment to survive. We see them setting up camp outside those lands once the Holy Nation falls. It’s possible that what’s keeping them at bay are other larger factions similar to the Cannibals

Mainly the other hives. If you kill any of the hive queens (western or eastern) the fogmen start taking up their space.

@@plmokm33 I assume this to be related to how fully functional hives dispose of their sick and wounded. Whatever's wrong with the fogmen could be incredibly infectious, but because (when they're part of a hive mind) anyone who displayed symptoms would immediately be cremated alive, it can only spread to the hiveless, who place much higher value on their individual lives.

I saw a theory somewhere that they were a hive, but their queen died and over time became more and more crazy because of the lack of pheromones of the queen

Yes this! ^ I was going to comment and bring this up. Solid theory; if you (game spoilers ahead) kill the Western Hive or Southern Hive Queens, then Fogmen deathyards pop up in the hive's stead. It's easier to believe that these queenless hives become as fogmen, rather than get invaded by them. Thus, the fogmen of the foglands are likely a hive that has already lost their Queen.

@@DrMFoster7 If they were exiled they became out of touch with their queens pheromones. Perhaps it only affects those who are still within the queens control when she dies because they all "felt" it.

I don't think it's a coincidence that fogmen live so close to the cannibal nation. There must be some reason why both hivers and humans became like this in that part of the continent.

You guys know how Beep is found in Mongrel and you can't tell how he got there? What if Beep was part of the northern hive then broke away from the hive mind just days before the queen died and the northern hive became the fogmen. Cause I don't think Beep tells you how old he is, nor how long hivers even live.

The fact then when you kill the southern or western hive and fogmen start to pop up there leads to a lot of people believing there was once a Northern Hive at the fog lands and some earlier war killed off their Queen which in turn led to all of the Hivers there turning mad and cannibalistic. Hopefully Kenshi provides more lore on the matter.

if you bring a hiver through there, theyll usually talk about the "Deadhive" and the parasite. my best guess is that the parasite infected the hive, and the queen was likely killed in the process. but as there is no central hiver figure beyond the wandering princes, and no central base, its hard to tell anything with certainty.

I suspect that they got wiped out by either the Western Hive or the Holy Nation, or they might’ve stumbled upon some ancient tech that was dangerous. Maybe by worshipping the consumption of living beings, it’s actually a reference that the hivers once worshipped an ancient piece of tech that blew up and created the fog lands. Like a bomb used to pacify the giant skeletons in obedience. Perhaps this was a weapon of mass destruction from a time long past, like the laser satellites that still orbit the planet. Or it could’ve been a sealed parasite that infected the Queen and spread to the rest of the hivers. Perhaps they worshipped a container, opened it, consumed it and the parasite overtook them and so they kept doing this until the fogmen were created, maybe the fogmen turned on the Queen and killed her. I don’t think it’s pheromone separation, because Hivers who get exiled from the other hives don’t turn into fogmen. Food for thought.

Its worth mentioning that most people in Mongrel are basically trapped there. Unable to leave due to the danger posed by the fogmen.

My own headcannon is that the fog is actually a tainted version of the pheromones the hive queens use. Maybe it comes from a natural source, a mad queen or its an ancient prototype since it seems like the hivers were made by ancient humans. Maybe the pheromones slowly attract no-hives from the surroundings who no longer have the pheromones of their queen. That could be why Beep is found in Mongrel because he was drawn to the pheromones but his free will was too strong or hes just too dumb to be influenced by the fog

considering the only source that blames a parasite is from southern hivers, who aren't trustworthy sources, and the southern and western hive both turn to fogmen after their queens die, it's quite possible that this is simply what happens once a queen falls.

I'm terrified of the fogmen. I've only managed to venture through the fog lands once. I'm currently returning with my band of 10 nomad adventurers on our way to Mongrel. Wish me luck :)

I dont know if you know this, but theres a tower on an island west of vain, south from the western hive HQ, and that tower is full of fog men. I came looking up this video after I found that tower and was surprised to find you didnt mention it!

I recall my first encounter with them I was scared shitless..once i got stronger i could take m 6 man team and kill a ton of em but then i noticed they had others they had captured and tied to poles and were eating them alive..

I've found them very enjoyable to deal with because you can set yourself a challenge to try and rescue as many people as you can, but always end up being unable to save them all.

They're perfect for my heavy weapon skeletons. It's very easy to train you combat stats when they swarm you. It's also very satisfying...

@@hiiambarney4489 no, they'll ignore the skeletons once they're downed. You'll not be captured by the fogmen, that's why it's such an effective training ground for skeletons. You can just grab a weapon, charge in, get beaten up, repair yourself and start all over until your stats are in the 30s to 40s depending on your patience. Fogmen won't even touch you, if you "caught" yourself to the prison poll. So being eaten isn't an option for our metallic friends. Pro tip 1: use the repair beds in the hive villages, they're cheaper. Pro tip 2: if you're crashing in mongrol for repairs and not the hives, use the skeleton repair bed in the snail house and not the one by the limb merchant, the bed in the snail house is a bit cheaper.

I think this is the "madness" that being hiveless can lead, not all hiver become fogman, but some without queen pheromones become fogman, at least that is what i though was cannon

Considering the sheer amount of fogmen they have to be reproducing somehow. One theory is that after the region’s queen died the hive princes of the hive still used the queens incubator but this led to the genes of future hivers to degrade losing any form of higher thinking. No longer being able to farm due to this, they resorted to consuming anyone unfortunate to stumble into them; converting them into biomass for the incubator to make more fogmen.

My personal headcanon/theory is that the fog "parasite" has a similar function to the Queen's pheromones, but they only get infected after they get a cut for example

just got the game, ran through the hives only in small groups and was fine, one guy got kidnapped on one of my hashish runs, idk why he went the way he did but he was promptly dragged, put on a rod, and then worshipped until he died

The best way to deal with Fogmen or traveling through the Foglands is bonedogs. Fogmen wont kidnap and carry them away when a bonedog is incapped, and the Bonedogs eat up dead fogmen as free food. Elder bonedogs will usually instakill fogmen with 1 hit since fogmen only have 50 health, and elder dogs do 140 damage per hit.

As a Lone Skeleton Player, it's insanely fun to weaponize the Fogmen & Holy Nation Paladins for Maximum Profit in times of war. and it's relatively easy too if you have the mods to support it. Step 1: Provoke large scale battles of Fogmen & Paladins fighting each other Step 2: Turn the tide of battle in favor of the Fogmen, Allow them to capture as many enemy soldiers as possible Step 3: Slip into the Shadows and wait for the Fogmen to begin their Cannibal Feasts hosted by the Princes Step 4 (Optional): Ambush the Princes, Take Their Heads along with the Heavy Soldier Drones to sell in Mongrel Step 5: Allow the rest of the Fogmen Horde to devour the Holy Paladins, rejuvenating their numbers/strength & forcing the Lord Phoenix to send more Troops to the Western Front.
